Mr. Matt, I just recently found your channel. You sir are very informative and inspiring in both woodworking and spiritual. I love what you do, so thank you for your guidance. I’m looking to start a woodworking business. How do you determine your hourly rate or do you have a formal for determining your price per piece that you make. Thank you in advance.

Awesome Video Man. Just starting a wood turning business myself and there is a lot of good information in here. I actually got my first customer 2 days ago. Now i have to make first articles and revisit so we can set the quantities / costs of each and then I have to GET TO WORK! 🙂

Talk to colleges and junior colleges. They have programs and organizations to help start a business. Right now it’s a great time to do this as there’s money available for this.

Great video Matt! Many woodworkers need to HEAR this type of advice. I grew a small Graphic Arts company to over $1M in sales by using these principals alone. The most important of your steps is "Ask For The Sale"!

I am watching your recent LIVE stream now and already lovin yall! Great people and super channel. I am excited to watch more.

Great info and Motivation Matt! finishing my first sofa table this weekend. I have been procrastinating on it, so I will finally be glad to get it done. It will be a gift to a Aunt In N.C. I will be all over your channel. Keep up the good work and great videos. John.

If you’re looking to start a “woodworking business,” just remember there’s a reason all of these guys are making YouTube their primary source of income, and not selling woodworking.

Because there are a bazillion people pocket-hole-building a bunch of “farm” furniture and throwing it on Facebook right now. These channels aren’t helping. I don’t condemn them for it- do what makes money.

As a mortgage lender, register you business asap. Your going to file your taxes for your new venture on a schedule C. You need two years tax returns to use your new income to qualify for loans. So if you are looking to purchase a new house with a better shop in the future, treat it like a business.

Great video! I just found this video and your channel. It’s very informative and inspiring. I have wanted to have a woodworking business for many years and have tried a few times in various ways with no luck. It’s so hard to get people to pay what things are worth these days. But I am going to try again this year. I do a variety of small scale woodworking including scrollsawn names and decoration, carved signs, cutting boards and charcuterie boards, games, puzzles, carved spoons and hiking sticks, and custom work. I also have a goofy channel just sharing my life and trying to help people smile. Thank you sir for sharing! I will be watching more. Have a blessed day.🙂

    All great advice! Thanks Matt!

    Building barrister bookcase now.
    Best of luck.

  33. Kris Rothman on April 5, 2022 at 7:12 pm

Well I am trying to get started with my own business so let see how this works. I have been in love with this stuff since Norm and the new Yankee work shop. Trying to show a picture of my shop but it will not let me.

  34. dafirnz on April 5, 2022 at 7:15 pm

I’ve seen some stuff for sale on places like Facebook and have no idea how people are making any money. I’ll admit, I’ve sold some stuff too cheap, but I’ve seen some stuff out there that barely covers the cost of the lumber.

  35. Brett's Basement Woodshop on April 5, 2022 at 7:16 pm

Great video. As soon as I get a space for a workshop I’m going all in. My one stall garage is not enough right now

Great advice Matt, thanks so much

  41. TheNeedlessMage on April 5, 2022 at 7:20 pm

Thanks for this, Matt! A friend of mine sent me this video as I’ve been toying with getting into business. I’ve built stuff for friends and family for years so I’m fairly confident in my woodworking skills, but I know I’m pretty clueless about actually going into business. This has been a great help.

  42. Dylan Storry on April 5, 2022 at 7:21 pm

Such an inspiration! Got 15 orders my first two weeks thanks to you. Love the vids!

“Let people know that you’re the go to person for that type of project.” That’s the best advice for any business start up IMO.

  46. Dale Verhaeghe on April 5, 2022 at 7:27 pm

Love watching your videos. Very good content. Just wondering if you’ll do a video on taking pallet wood and making it into something. Haven’t watched all your videos so I don’t know if you have done one of them are not yet. Keep up the great work

Due to being diagnosed with Distal Muscular Atrophy and losing my job due to COVID related issues I retired at 61 years of age. I am on a fixed income so I cannot afford to send you any “gifts” but I wanted to let you know how much I appreciated your YouTube videos! I have gone back to my roots and started building farmhouse furniture (I actually sold a quilt ladder and a craft table). I do all my work in a 12’x 12’ uninsulated shed. Keep up the good work.
