This may be an add on tip to the tennis ball you use on the wood lathe. If the tennis ball seams too soft go to pet store n buy a doggie tennis ball chew toy. I don’t have any idea how it’s made but it’s much firmer. Anyway if it don’t work on the lathe you can always keep it handy while watching TV n use it as n exercise squ-zee ball too improve your hand grip. Much more com-fee to finger tips than a regular tennis ball.

Almost anything is fixable, wood glue mixed with sawdust (from the same wood) will fill any holes you make. Beeswax makes drawers super smooth to open and close.
Don’t obsess over perfection. Chances are it’s a small thing that no one else but you will notice
