    Good ideas, I like it!
    I built a stepstool with my three year old, she loves sawing and planing. I would angle the legs of the stepstool outwards slightly, especially since you have an overhang, it makes it more stable. Yeah, mine isn’t either… It complicates the construction a bit, needs an additional tool (plane) though you can get away with 60 grit sandpaper, spray glued to a piece of flat plywood or mdf.

    10:12 why not just use dowels on both end of the joint of both pieces and glue them together?
