$30 Outdoor Bench with Back from 2x6s [Only 3 Tools and 30mins]

$30 Outdoor Bench with Back from 2x6s [Only 3 Tools and 30mins]

This bench is actually a spin off of the well known Leopold Bench which was named after the conservationist Aldo Leopold who built them for birdwatching and nature photography. I liked the simplicity of the Leopold Bench but wanted to modify the design a little by varying the angles to make it a little more comfortable and have a proper seat and back. So this is the design that I came up with. If you are interested in the 2×8 version of this bench or the modern Adirondack plans that compliment this bench get those links below.

I built 2 of these from your original video a year or so ago. These benches are SURPRISINGLY COMFORTABLE and easy to put together. They were made for the girlfriend’s birthday to put around the fire pit.

Hi, Great video, and i always wondered how to use my speed square, would this work on 1×6 timber?, Newbe to making benches

  3. Chris Coughlin on May 29, 2022 at 8:01 pm

I made the 2×8 version and it is just a little too big for my porch so I might give this one a try. Thanks for the speed square lesson too. 😎

    Is it feasible to build small benches for children out of 1 x 6 x 8’s? The 2 x 8 x 8’s are a bit
heavy. But, thanks for those plans and I will try the 2 x 6 x 8 bench.

And thanks for sharing your knowledge and simplifying building these benches, and all of the
    other products.

hi ! great job and great video. just worried by units… i’m french and don’t understand inch / cm
    For example, 33" = 83,82cm right ? but what about 24 – 1/2" ?? is it 24,5" = 62,23 cm or 5 3/8" = 5,375" = 13,65cm ?
i would love to try 🙂
    thanks for all

Would these work, or has anyone tried making this as a chair by just reducing the length of the seat and seat back pieces?

    Love it nice job

    Awesome

I built this today. I live in Canada. The materials cost about 70 bucks. The prices of wood are ridiculously high right now. It was super easy to make. Instructions were easy to follow.

I remember this bench. I actually used it as a project for my woodwork students. Great video 💯

Cool but whats up with your website? Its trash. You should build a better one.

  17. rkgooner89 on May 29, 2022 at 8:25 pm

Mate, thats a great build, explained really nicely and in laymans terms, really apprecaite people like you sharing your skillset with others that may be less confident (like me !)

  18. James Christian on May 29, 2022 at 8:33 pm

Well explained and nicely done DIY project,, i love it,, i like how u use simple tools unlike some videos that says all you need is a simple saw and then brings out tools that some of us never seen before… great video… thanks bro.💯💥👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏

What is different between this bench and the video you did about a year ago?

  20. Mixwell1983 on May 29, 2022 at 8:35 pm

Ive made 3 of the 2×8 benches from your video and came out great. Price difference in 2×6 and 2×8 arent that much, its like a $2 difference per board.

Im guessing all measurements and angles are about the same as the old bench ?

  21. tomsterism on May 29, 2022 at 8:37 pm

Made one of your benches and LOVE the comfort it provides in my rear yard. I would love one from 2X8" lumber, also. Such enhanced luxury intrigues me. Was I to make one from 2X8" lumber, are the material cuts identical?

  22. Jim Lamb on May 29, 2022 at 8:38 pm

Great build. I added arms and built 2 for my porch at the lake house. Very comfortable.

  23. Advanced Geekery on May 29, 2022 at 8:38 pm

Nice design. Are you using pressure treated wood? What’s the right choice for an outdoor build? Thanks!

  24. Ron B on May 29, 2022 at 8:44 pm

Good video thank you for a good design for a bench

  25. Aggie fan on May 29, 2022 at 8:46 pm

Great job! (Side note: the thing to say now is “be safe”. How about “ have a great week” or “have fun with your project”.

  26. Randy Rice on May 29, 2022 at 8:48 pm

This is a cool simple project. How much do they normally sell for?

  27. A. G. on May 29, 2022 at 8:50 pm

Thanks for this videos, very well explained 👏

  28. daivd kuehn on May 29, 2022 at 8:51 pm

just want to let you know, we built this project for my son’s eagle scout project, it came out fantastic. we built 8 of them!. and we then donated them to Alafia State Park , here in florida for a primitive camping site. they are currently sitting around a fire ring. they are beautiful and so comfortable!. thanks for the design and instructions.

  29. Carl Madsen on May 29, 2022 at 8:57 pm

I’ve used the earlier 2×8 video and made a dozen of these benches, but using 2×10 material instead. The benches are very heavy, very sturdy. Thank you!
