Adam makes his ideal workshop apron from scratch in today’s build, after having recently discovered the joys of working with a shop apron in the cave. Made of leather and waxed canvas, this apron addresses all of Adam’s tool carrying needs with streamlined pocket arrangements, durable straps, and is fitted for his own body. Follow along to learn how you can pattern and sew your own apron, and we’d love to see how you carry your tools while working in your own shops!

Why did I ever stop following Adam after university 9 years ago… This is awesome! I love the fact that these shows are NOT +- 15 minutes of speed montage on bizar stunts/builds, but ARE doable educational DIY projects and all steps are shown in 40 minutes! (Like shows used to be.) KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
I’m thinking of getting into leather work so this was great to watch. I thought it might work better to put the D ring and dog collar catches on the outside of your leg so they don’t click together. Watching this prompted me to order a workshop apron though 😃👍Thanks Adam!
You mail i felt for ensuring. Thank you sir very much.
The way you sniff that material is the same way i smell old books and vinyl records HA!
This is the finest Machinist’s/Shop Apron I’ve yet seen. Someday I hope to order one. Congrats from a former Larkspur townie.
That apron looks sick, i want one and I work behind a monitor all day
This time I will do it manually with the help of Woodglut designs.
Just found this now… Imma make 3 of these! 2 in canvas and leather like that 1 of which is for the workshop the other for the South African modified offset smoker build. The third in all leather for the eventual forge … Awesome apron!
I just had to watch your video 2nd time, after I saw it the first time I thought I would make myself a apron to protect myself and have my tools at my side this time to see what all did. I hit the like button.
Wow what blowtorch is that @ 26:00 ? Looks so easy to use
Just to say, I would love to see Adam naming the manikin, menikin
Adam needs a manicure badly

Adam, a few cups of coffee and a good sativa clearly mix well.
A nice apron. I have no need for one but want to make one now.
How did a 6" steel rule not go immediately into one of the chest pockets? That seems like a glaring oversight.
Adam using whistles to indicate stich lines is just <3
I really odd caught cool charcoal.

Resident Evil 2 Crank sound effect LMAO

I’d love to see Adam do an entire video on sewing.
Adam: "This pocket being open, is just a place for things to get lost." picks out a random piece of metal.
You forgot the reinforcing rivets on the pockets
I love your videos!
why not electrically etch it?
Depending on the task at hand dictates what tools I bother to lug around and also the apron that I wear, many makers seem to have the issue with parsing what is absolutely necessary from what is handy. Multiple squares, multiple markers (of the same size) to name a few examples. I wear an apron or lab coat when in the wood shop. I like my waxed canvas apron with the flaps that can keep dust out on my front pockets for EDC of tools and remotes. I have at all times the dust collector remote, 12′ tape measure and a #9 mech pencil in that apron. I also wear stretch canvas work pants that has a leg pocket that my phone fits in and a loop on the waist that my SS1 clips onto. These also have hammer loops that will hold scissors, or an adjustable square for a particular task. I have a lab coat I put on when in the spray booth, that has a couple pair of nitrile gloves, a tack cloth and either 0000 steel wool or 600 sandpaper depending on whether I am using water based or other finish. In the forge I have a thick leather apron that has a silver streak pencil stuck in the pocket. I also have another silver streak in the suede leather welding jacket arm pocket. I like the utility and protection that an apron provides. I have a super cheap suede apron I cut the top and sides of the front pockets and let the extra material hand down to my knees, for working in the mechanics bay, it saves my pants from getting greasy as I tend to lift and brace heavy greasy parts with my thighs.
do you remember when nerds were not cool?
its gonna suck when you have to go pee
Was anyone else left wondering about the location and design of the peg on which it hangs when not being worn?
Pockets galore
Thank you!
31:34 Glad you got the right kind of D rings off craigslist lol
Looks like metal to me. Great time watching you do this helmet. 😎
Lol, video #2 for me and I’m subbing! Didn’t think I’d care to watch through an apron making video but…here we are 🤷🏻♂️😂
Man, you are passionate, Adam! Love the energy!
Why does an apron get an exclamation mark in the title?
My 9 month old baby has no interest in my YouTube choices, but he stares, enthralled, at Adam’s tool tips.
I remember making an apron as the first job in either home ec class or shop in school. I’ve started getting back into physically rather than digitally modelling stuff and protecting my clothes from mess has become a thing. I’ve got overalls but they are not always practical.
My version of this as a one day build: ‘cuts down a pair of chest waders’. lol
1:21 I really wanted him to mess with us and just keep pulling stuff out
I wear "tin pants" waxed canvas pants in the bush everyday. It’s a great material. Nothing tougher. Takes a beating and lasts forever.
I bought a set of your (de)merit badges, fully deserving of them all except the 3d printer one (yet). It immediately became apparent I now need an apron for life to attach them too, so glad this video was made.
"everyday carry" is usually a term used by those people who think carrying a hip holster with their Glock at the mall is normal 🤣
I had my own made for me for when I’m blowing glass. You had an amazing idea! As always!
The woman version would have fake pockets.
Your great grandson will wear this someday.
Anyone who is a welder knows that an apron is a tool that is important along with a heavy jacket
I finally designed my own shop apron because I couldn’t find exactly what I needed – So many lack what I needed or just really aren’t designed for a woodworker – Thought you might get a kick out of it – After 6 months of daily use I did a review of what I’d change but for the most part everything worked just as I had anticipated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp3emh4EUbw
Machinist gang XD
For the straps, I would have used the save material for the shoulders and used plastic side buckles which would connected to the side of the leg. I tend to kneel and or squat when working and would definitely find the metal clips bothersome. Especially behind the knee.
I think Adam Savage is a closet tailor. 🤣😂🤣😂
I started sewing with a fat quarter of Filson tin cloth. I had to learn to sew to make some your of it. This is a perfect project for me.
Great video and tutorial
Ordered one for myself! But shipping/tax fees to the UK are to the tune of $67 :S But I love the design! I would try to make one myself, but sewing machines and I do not get along lol.
