That’s very clever! I’m surprised this isn’t a common wee jig. Thanks Colin, enjoyed that.

  2. Scott louis on January 10, 2023 at 2:42 am

I had that problem years ago but found that solution pretty quick but that switch would be fabulas

    Great Jig

Thanks Colin I did something like that years ago I took NOT my best plane and drilled and tapped it to attach a guide. I don’t think mag switches were invented or the strongest magnet available then was a lodestone. When all ya got is rocks, use rocks. It worked pretty well for my purposes until I bought a jointer and now I have a dusty rusty jack plane with 1/4-20 holes in the side.

Brillant idea Colin! Gotta make me one of those…………Thanks………….πŸ‘πŸ‘

Stanley made such a fence (386), for their planes, 5 to 8 and it worked well but they haven’t made them for 60 years.
    Thanks
    James

    love the concept,gr8 stuff

Amazing – this should be a lesson for inovative companies like Mag Switch – they will never be able to think of all of the amazing ideas for using their tool. Congrats on another fabulous idea – the instant on/off of the guide tot he plane almost converts this into a #55 (?) combination plane! it’s so simple… yet so powerful ( even if you can get a good square edge free hand…sometimes that stock is very thin and you still want that square edge)

  10. SilentCartographer on January 10, 2023 at 2:56 am

    Good one Colin! Cheers.

  11. kperellie on January 10, 2023 at 2:57 am

Perhaps you should have mentioned, at least for the sake of a beginner, that not only does the face of the wood being planed need to be milled perfectly flat first, but the plane body should also be square to the sole. Not all planes are. Otherwise, this is a great jig.

  12. Enrique Caruso on January 10, 2023 at 3:00 am

    Nice jig. Very clever! Thanks!

  13. Neil Grayson on January 10, 2023 at 3:01 am

Nothing short of brilliant colin. The magnaswitch is very versatile. I will have to consult the CFO aka the wife to see if I can buy one.

  14. wtfbuddy1 on January 10, 2023 at 3:04 am

Did you have to put a small notch into the guide for the blade to sit in so its 100% square to the jig? nice video

  15. Peter James on January 10, 2023 at 3:06 am

    Nice!!!!!!! I’m building one!

  16. Autotech1 on January 10, 2023 at 3:06 am

    A training wheel for planes!

  17. M. BH. on January 10, 2023 at 3:06 am

it is v. gteat jig and simple solution for beginners to get a flat surfaces.,But must we use a magnetic knob?
    Thanks for your vedio.

    wow ! amazing

  21. Leonard Gump on January 10, 2023 at 3:10 am

Great! Training wheels for the jointing plane.

  22. Peter Edwards on January 10, 2023 at 3:11 am

    Such a good idea

  23. Rollie Kelly on January 10, 2023 at 3:11 am

You didn’t emphasize that the edge of the iron must be parallel to the surface of the plane bottom. Otherwise, a good trainer for muscle memory.

  24. Bill Carroll on January 10, 2023 at 3:12 am

    That’s a great idea, if you’ve got a mag-switch! πŸ‘πŸ½

  25. Lap Joint on January 10, 2023 at 3:13 am

Great idea! How about just using neodymium magnets embedded in the wood though? These Magswitch things are pretty expensive.

  26. Brad Meacham on January 10, 2023 at 3:15 am

Most definitely a fantastic idea! Yet another use of a Magswitch. Guess I better break down and buy some now.

  27. Robert Brunston on January 10, 2023 at 3:15 am

Great idea for a jig! I am sure a lot of people can use it! Thanks Colin.

  28. Andrei IR on January 10, 2023 at 3:20 am

Very interesting idea! However it got me thinking… What if we’d use a rabbeting plane for edge planing since it already has a fence?

  29. Sean Smith on January 10, 2023 at 3:21 am

Great idea! Thats what I’m doing this weekend.

  30. Shawn R on January 10, 2023 at 3:25 am

If you have a powered hand planer could you show the proper techniques and some tricks for using it?

  31. Bootzey on January 10, 2023 at 3:26 am

    Awesome!

  32. willian arguello on January 10, 2023 at 3:27 am

Bien. Para la cuadratura lateral. Y a lo largo?

  33. Ross Marsden on January 10, 2023 at 3:28 am

What a great idea! You see these on power planes.
You kept saying straight and flat when you meant neither of those, and you even said so! You meant square or at right angles to the face.
Sorry to be critical. I love you videos and almost always thumbs up, as with this one.

  34. Wolfgang on January 10, 2023 at 3:34 am

I saw a similar jig on the channel "Alan’s Wood Shop Ideas", and his video "2 DIY Hand Plane Guides" is from March 2019. Shouldn’t credit go where credit is due????????

  35. Ygor B.F.Ferreira on January 10, 2023 at 3:34 am

    Excelente!

  36. Gary Holtfreter on January 10, 2023 at 3:34 am

I use a bench top planer. No wobbles and a true 90 degree cut.

  37. Demy maker on January 10, 2023 at 3:35 am

Adoro le cose semplici ma funzionali!

  38. Ian Pearse on January 10, 2023 at 3:35 am

  43. The Wizard on January 10, 2023 at 3:40 am

This is a great idea and really quite easy to make. I have used the same type of jig on my electric planner for a while now. It certainly helps with getting a square corner with a minimum of wastage and effort

  44. Richard Chamberlain on January 10, 2023 at 3:41 am

    What a wizard idea!
