Block Plane using Old Mower Blade

Block Plane using Old Mower Blade

My Premier Project Plans: https://paskmakes.com/premier-project-plans/
My Free Plans: https://paskmakes.com/free-plans/

Recently I made my first plane and as that one went so well I decided to make a small block plane using an old mower blade. I also used the forge from my last video to heat treat the blade and the reason the forge was made.

As I mention in the video, I’m no expert on heat treating a blade but it is more than achievable with fairly basic equipment.

I reckon it came out great!

As always I’m happy to answer any questions.

It’s a treat to watch your videos! Even your very first attempts at these things are so perfect that I wonder where is the room for improvement!

I’ve heard from people that use both wood and metal body planes, wood planes are easier to use. Is that true? I’ve used both but I’m not in the shop often enough to tell the difference. Another YouTuber suggested that the wood body plane is burnishing the surface as you plane and that is why they are easy to use.

What wood did you use to make it? Aside from the blade, this looks like something I could do with simple hand tools and a mitre box.

I thought mower blades were very mild steel? I know the ones on my mower are for sure.

Fergus is a right proper lad and he’s doing a great job.

I made one remarkably similar. I glued a really hard, dense, tropical hardwood layer to the bottom for a more wear resistant sole, and I inlaid a small metal strip in front of the blade opening to help keep it true as well. I also glued a short carriage bolt onto the back as a striker for when I need to loosen the wedge. You totally don’t need any of that, but in for a penny, in for a pound. Good idea with the lawn mower blade. Is that as good as leaf springs, do you think?

I couldn’t help but notice how similar your block plane and my computer mouse are. I’m afraid that I would be likely to try to left click in order to get the plane to work. LOL! Nice block plane.

Really liked the fact that you made the blade yourself (and the furnace!). Super cool build – lot of hand tool work there, my kind of video. Thank you! I loved it! (and so kid the kiddos)

I know this is a bit off topic here but I just want to saw how great the audio is in your videos. Your voice is always crystal clear no matter where you’ve got your camera set up and if you do voice-overs afterwards it is not noticeable to me, and that is something I appreciate.
