Wish you would have given Scott Meeks some credit, obviously you copied his instruction to make this video your own.

Nice video. Thanks for sharing! Note on the gel stain… Only plant based oils are known to spontaneously combust not petroleum products. I’m not sure about the Bentley product but I thought you might find this interesting. https://paulsellers.com/2012/10/3-in-1-yes-boiled-or-raw-linseed-oil-no/

I’ve only recently found your channel and I really enjoy your videos. If I might make one suggestion, it would be to show more information on safety. Sanding purpleheart should be done with a mask at a minimum. I also very much enjoyed your series on the wall hung tool cabinet. Thanks!!!!

that is pretty wide for a mouth opening of Krenov style plane…

This is the one I want to build. Thanks for the excellent video.

That was a very cool video and build. The end product is very nice, thanks for the build

  12. John Smith on February 18, 2023 at 5:43 am

I have to say this was a very logical approach to making a plane, bravo!

  13. Gary Wall on February 18, 2023 at 5:43 am

I’ve been trawling Youtube, watching various craftsmen making excellent wooden planes with a mind to making a couple of my own. This is the best Krenov style plane video I’v seen so far so I think I will go with your approach with only one or two minor differences in the way I will need to get to basically the same result. Thanks for taking the time to make this video and in such a no-nonsense way too.

Extremely dangerous operation at 2:10, longest edge should always be supported when ripping or cross cutting, cross cut sleds shouldn’t be used to rip pieces so narrow that you need to remove your hands before the cut is even finished.

  15. Bill Anderson on February 18, 2023 at 5:44 am

You did a great job! I have a similar project going on right now, made from lacewood and cocobolo. My only regret is that I made the mouth opening a bit to wide so I might get some tear out using it on certain types of wood. Making your own hand plane is a project I think every woodworker should undertake, its quite rewarding.

Hey really cool video.  Good job.

  17. Keith Chamberlain on February 18, 2023 at 5:48 am

Damn dude get rid of those burn marks. Beautiful hand made curly maple hand plane with cancer scars in the inside

  22. Magnificent Charter on February 18, 2023 at 5:53 am

    Nice looking plane, guys.

  23. Simple DIYr on February 18, 2023 at 5:56 am

Great detailed tutorial. Been looking to build my own plane.

Quick question. Where did you get the iron from?

  24. Black Swan Prepping on February 18, 2023 at 5:56 am

That is really neat! I wish I knew this ‘sandwich’ method before I built my first handplane… It was a fun build but cutting a jack plane from a single piece of beech is a tough job. Thanks for the video!

  25. L R on February 18, 2023 at 5:56 am

Nice touch with the dowels to align everything and to put in the main dowel hole in the beginning. Thanks for the tips!

  26. Matt on February 18, 2023 at 5:56 am

Absolutely no reason to use a crosscut jig. Your table saw is designed to rip wood accurately.

  27. Tim Krause on February 18, 2023 at 5:57 am

How do you determine the location for the cross pin?

  28. Gino Asci on February 18, 2023 at 5:58 am

Ripping with a crosscut sled, holy crap, that made me really nervous. I like that block plane thou, it works great. Thumbs up for yous new yorkers, i notice the accent. Buon giorno!

  29. Ty Stange on February 18, 2023 at 5:58 am

If you dont put finish on the sole the plane glides so much easyer and is nicer to work with

  30. Scott Gates on February 18, 2023 at 5:59 am

wow, why not use the rip fence at 2:10 ?

  31. Dan Wittmayer on February 18, 2023 at 6:01 am

Great project with beautiful results! I learned plenty from the video & comments. I have a question about production values. On your other videos, is your voice level as out of balance with the sound of the power tools? I turned up the volume to hear you speak & the machines blew out my ears. The shrieking of the table saw woke up the neighbors! Otherwise, the direct approach wastes no time & avoids the silliness & repetition of other Youtubers. Very good on you!

Good vid’! When I get my workshop up and running I will give this a go!

  33. Charles LaGreca on February 18, 2023 at 6:03 am

Good video. Wish you would have shown making of the wedge. Also, the guy running the camera really should work on his focusing technique.

  34. lexugax on February 18, 2023 at 6:06 am

At minute 1:50, why not just use the tablesaw fence? Good video btw.

  35. Arun Sharma on February 18, 2023 at 6:07 am

    Very nice

  36. ToddAndelin on February 18, 2023 at 6:11 am

    cool video, beautiful plane

  37. bomaite1 on February 18, 2023 at 6:12 am

Looks good. Your dowel is too big. You don’t need such a thick one for strength, and it will catch your curls. You can pare off some of this dowel, but the real answer is a smaller dowel to open up the throat. A metal rod can be thinner yet. You also need a longer iron. Hammer-adjusted irons need to stick out of the body a little, so you can tap the sides as well when you need to adjust the angle of cut (when the curl is thicker on one side). You need to keep the outside walls thin, also. Yours are a little beefy. I know, too thin is going to break, but it is a balacing act. Too thick will be annoying, believe me. Very clumsy and bulky. Metal sides are also a solution here and work well with a metal rod. Brass looks nice, but use what you have. Lets see more!

  38. David on February 18, 2023 at 6:13 am

Really enjoyed this video. What are the dimensions of your blank? I’m guessing you started with 10/4 or 12/4 maple? Thanks for sharing this, Dave.

  41. MrFcStPaulifan3 on February 18, 2023 at 6:14 am

01:48 why are you cutting this way? In my opinion it’s not the right and 100% accurate way. Instead you could push the work against a parallel thingy.. you won’t get burning marks as well

  42. Thomas Sawyer on February 18, 2023 at 6:14 am

So this was quite a while ago. Have you made any changes? Switched to a longer iron or cut more off the back so you can adjust laterally? Also, did you need to work on the mouth? Thanks.

  43. Jaimelapoesie on February 18, 2023 at 6:16 am

How about a spoke shave to shape the plane? Or any form of sander?

  44. Shogun-Jimi on February 18, 2023 at 6:18 am

beautiful work – I might be making a plane – thanks Guys

  45. Jim Bo on February 18, 2023 at 6:21 am

How do you stop the blade knocking back when planing anything wider than half an inch.

  46. Tony Ennis on February 18, 2023 at 6:22 am

Heavens, what kind of bandsaw is that?

  47. SJ76 on February 18, 2023 at 6:24 am

Nicely done…….Thumbs up! I really like your content…just wish you guys would crack a smile and make it look like you are enjoying yourself. Some of the videos look like you are being forced to make the video and it looks so stressful.

If you want to make it yourself just look for woodprix website. There is all you need to make it 🙂

  50. Pedro Soto on February 18, 2023 at 6:31 am

Great video. Very nice indeed, simple and straight to the point. I just stumbled with your channel and you just helped me to decide to give it a go, I’ll try to do a small smoothing plane, or a block plane, we’ll see what comes out. Need to think of the wood cause I only have oak and some cherry, just to look around what I can get. Thank you Gary, now I’ll check what other good videos you’ve done. Take care. Pedro
