How’s this for finishing?
The consistently high quality and great value of your videos truly sets them apart. I’m VERY grateful for this solid advice and instruction on using a portable electric plane, a tool that I have avoided until now because it scared the crap out of me. Now, however, armed with your guidelines, I’m ready to use one. Please keep up the great work.
Thank you!
I like that you have examples and show off the use 👍🏼👍🏼
Ps. Go Red Wings! 👍🏼👍🏼
Good education, Thank you
I’m really impressed with the whole package; Knowledge, Attitude, and Presentation.
Thanks Mr Stumpy…. 🤙🏼
Very helpful.
A few days ago, I searched YouTube for "DIY thicknesser." I found one made from one of these. Slow but cheap. The maker was taking half a millimetre at a time.
I think you could replace the planer with a belt sander, or a router.
This is fantastic advice, thank you 🙂
Dope I just got one of these off the side of the road $40
Bought one of these many years ago when I was making a keel extension for a Tarpon boat. I love it. Not sure how I managed without it before.
@10:15 ty
I use them for carving bowls and kayak/canoe paddles to hog off large amount of material in a fraction of the time. It gives my bowls a flat face to rest on my carving bench to allow a stable and safe piece to use my chisels and knives. For paddles, it get me up to about 60% of material removed before I start with my edged hand tools, especially for the carved round sections or transition areas.
What about another video with more techniques?
Jsk koubou made a jig for the parallel plane issue
you could use a router for the 2nd side but need a jig
i get the board face flat and true with planer just like you demonstrated then strike a marking gauge from that face to the lowest point on opposite side plane down to line. wola you have a parallel board
Can you use a marking gauge to make the depth level if you don’t have a thickness planer?
Pay extra attention to the safety warnings! I was using an electric hand planer to adjust the fit of a new pair of french doors. It was 9:30 at night, I was dog tired, and I stepped on the power cord while the motor was spinning down. I ended up planing 1/2 inch off the tip of my left index finger. Thus began my obsession with old Stanley hand planes.
Dude! You read my mind! I have a small shop and small budget, but would like a tabletop planer. Not any more! BTW – thanks for all the safety tips too! You’re the BEST!
I just count on snipe happening. The ends of the boards are casualty of my planing war with modern day lumber.
I bought unplanned pine wood from an Amish mill. I am trying to plane the wood with a hand held planer, but the more I plane it the more "hairy" it gets! I was wondering what kind of wood you were using?
Wonderful
I’ve been really looking for a good electric planer video on YouTube that covers how to work with uneven and twisted lumber. This video is golden.
This is such an underestimated tool. I use my planer very often.
This is just quality content, thank you!
Thank you. And congratulations, a vrey clear and very focused video.
curious if you can have either a lunchbox planer with a jig and shims or an electric hand plane to flatten boards which would be a better first step for a newbie
should be titled Basic Hand Planer Skills, but good video
Thanks stumpy
Removing crooks, bows, cups, crowns and twists…Jigs are your friend. Straight lateral rails with a planer support jig will stop the planer following the curve and ensure it only removes the unwanted material. Not that James’s tip here aren’t golden, but research some jigs and it will save the trial and error approach.
Loved this. You’ve just saved me from needing to buy a jointer that I don’t actually have money or room for. Money can go into the thickness planer.
Sanders and planers and sanders I usually drape the cord over my shoulder so the cord is behind me and away from the bottom of my tool. I’ve run over the cord with my sander 1 times to many.
Thank you very very much
Your ability to give your presentation in a video in nearly one take is crazy. No uhs or ums….just straight and to the point!
thank yousir
Thank you
You are such a great help to us Newbies…and probably everyone else.
What about beard trimming?
Another high-quality video. Compact, and to the point, this short video was most enlightening. Thanks for all the info and especially the safety tips! Be well and Prosper!!!

I use my hand planer to get a close shave as my facial hair is quite thick and manly…
This vs say, a no7 jointing plane? Or a number 5?
How to ensure a 45 degree angle? I’ll build a jig and do this on the table saw. I don’t see how the hand planer can do this. You totally skip this in the video
Could you use a track saw to get one edge straight in order to run the other edge on the table saw? This seems way quicker to me.
Can we somehow make plank straight without planer?
Nicely done. Clear, consise video. Well spoken, good examples. Thank you.
thanks, good explanation
I always thought a full wall bookshelf is the ultimate, but now I have seen your tool shelf and that is as sexy as the books!
