Decorative Wood Box // First Box DIY Woodworking
Decorative Wood Box // First Box DIY Woodworking
In this video, I make a decorative wood box with splines. This simple diy woodworking project makes a great gift. I’m surprised I’ve not made a box like this until now. The simple construction makes this decorative wood box a really unique gift.

When you cut the kerfs did you use a regular blade with offset alternating teeth? If so how do you eliminate the "cat’sears"? I make my boxes pretty much the same as you but I prefinish the inside with wipe on poly which also helps with any glue squeeze out.
Bruce, I love that red gum. The walnut splines made great accents. Well done.
Never heard of red gum before, it looks amazing.
Bruce
Appreciated no corny jokes or calling yourself names. Good quality
Craftmanship without begging for subscribers and just a normal garage eith everyday tools.
Great build snd video
Nice box Bruce, I have made a few boxes in my time, but I usually gravitate to the box joint. It seems easier to make them go together nicely than long mitre joints (or maybe that is just me!) Thanks for sharing
I DARE you to make this without any type of power tools. Only hand tools
Cock box.
Great video! I work with dozens of species, unfortunately I have never had the opportunity to use red gum, though I have always wanted to. Currently I am in the SE (SC specifically) but have never found any suppliers. How do you source it? I would love to find a couple hundred BF of it.
Loved the video Bruce and the box turned out awesome. Your logo is so cool and looks awesome on the bottom of the box! Really liked the idea of the shadow line via rabbet near the lid. All in all, great build.
What is the name of the laser engraver you used please?
The Walnut splines a very good beautiful box thanks for sharing
Since you did a small chamfer on the bottom with your hand plane, the same thing on the table saw was a bit of a wasted step. No big deal though and the project looks awesome!
Love how the figure int the wood makes it look like there are mountains in the background. First video you’ve released since I clicked subscribe–nice project. Looking forward to a new podcast episode later this week!
The finished project looks great.Β My only critique would be that the bottom is too thick.Β Given that the top overhangs the box, it might have looked better to actually recess the bottom into a rabbet.Β But I’m sure the recipient won’t even notice.Β Keep building!
Thanks Bruce foe airing this video whit us,Your design is simple, strong and beautiful. I wanna build my first hardwood box, And I wanna use your method
How do you like that brand of band saw?
Why does everyone who makes a you tube video always start by saying "HI, whats going on ?" my answer to that is usually, I dunno,..I’m watching your video.,… you tell me. !!
I have recently retired and I am building boxes. This was a great video with excellent workmanship. Thank you for some good ideas. I use the tape method for gluing as well but I sand my inside of the box before I put the tape down and use my compressed air to get the dust off before I tape. Makes the tape stick better with no dust on it. Certainly not a pro but just it makes it better to stick. Sure like your video and have subscribed. Thank you and greetings from Ladysmith, BC Canada
Wow niceπ thank you for sharing, subscribed π, hey I have started my youtube channel please watch the videos like, share, comment and subscribe thank you π

Box looks great! Love the color of that red gum.
Great project Bruce! I love the grain pattern of the wood and the splines look really cool. Nice work.
Nice work! ππ»ππ» …..ππ»βΆοΈππ»π
Can you tell us more about your redgum? where does it come from?
Awesome project but I dont have a jointer planer or box grinder lol
I was looking for some ideas for making a box and your video really sparked some great ones. I will be making mine out of Purple Heart with Leopard wood insert on the top and all sides. I am planning to use my table saw to make a chamfer on the top and underside of the lid. With an overhang all the way around, it will act as a opening limit when I add hinges. I really like the decorative splines. Great job.
Great build!!
Is this a tutorial for my new tampon box? It might be!! Yay! Get out the power tools baby!!
Who said you wasn’t a professional boxer
Would it be possible to achieve results on par with this, but without any cutting machine?
Great video! Super informative and love the music/editing. Cheers!
Looks fantastic! Where did you get the wood branding tool for your name? Iβd appreciate any info you could give. Thanks π
Hi what is the big dewalt planer called please ?and also what tape are u using for the box
Thanks, great vid ππ»
What are the measurements???
Well done bruce! Thank youy for sharing !
What a classy looking project! Well done Bruce.
Very good! Elegant in its simplicity. I did something like that many years ago out of a redbud tree my neighbor lady had me cut down. A year later I gave her a box like that and she was floored when I told her where the wood came from. I like the simplicity of yours and I think the look is right for a gift I want to make for a retiring coworker. One thing I would avoid is the way you glued the bottom on. Cross grain glued joints are liable to split the bottom due to changes in humidity. A floating bottom with a small amount of glue at the centerlines would be better.
Great looking box, Bruce!
Australian red gum??? Or is this something that grows in the states??
Nice box!
I may or may not be guilty of not sanding the inside of a box before gluing it up… more than once.
Bruce this box looks amazing, great job! π
Cool video! May you have a Happy & Prosperous New Year.
Since you re-sawed the wood, did you do a continuous grain match around all 4 sides? I think David Picciuto did a video on that a while back if memory serves me correctly. That box came out super nice, I love the character in the top and the coloring of the wood you used in the sides. Well done sir! It’s been so long since I’ve done a video, I feel like I’m going to have to start all over on my channel! Talk about being out of practice! You did great!
Cool box! If it were me I would have used a hammer to be sure the miter joint splines are in as far as they can go. Also it helps to have a straight edge across the top edges when taping the miter joints for glueing.
Good lookin’ box, Bruce! And you have the makings of another box already since you cut that one in two. Very smart project to take advantage of that beautiful red gum.
Cock box .
Nice job .
Great looking box and project. Iβve been meaning to make a decorative keep sake box for a while now and this is great inspiration
Bruce is back! Man that box looks stunning π how much sanding do you have to do after the laser?
This was great! Red gum is so underrated.
I thought I was already subscribed, guess not; just fixed that problem π€£
Great video Bruce! Good to see a local boy with a successful YouTube channel! I also live in Madison. Thanks for posting!
