DIY Air Cleaner and Dust Filter
DIY Air Cleaner and Dust Filter
In this video, the Saw Dust Maker and I show you how to build your own air cleaner / dust filter for your shop, saving your lungs and a couple hundred dollars.
Also keep in mind I record all of my own music for my videos. It’s one of the things I’m even more passionate about than woodworking.

Four filters duct taped together with the unaltered fan on top. This is a a classic video by a professional: totally overkill waste of time and skills!
What’s so cool is that your fan will NEVER get dirty and you just change the filters……..but I wonder if occasionally you could use a crevice tool of a vacuum cleaner to gently vacuum excess dust off to extend to life?
How to you place it on your furnace? And those fans wear out fast now due to China.
Folks, a lot of you comment on this video to tell me all of the reasons this unit will not work. I hate to disappoint everyone, but it DOES work. I’ve been using it for two years and have not had a problem. I did a follow-up video where I made it more efficient (Even Better DIY Air Cleaner and Dust Filter). I know that there are many ways to make a high powered super efficient unit, but I chose to make one that is cheap. Everyone has their own idea of cheap, but I used my definition. So if you’re going to tell me it’s impossible for this to work, you’re wrong. It may not work as efficiently as you would like it to, but it has served me well for two years and it’s still going strong.
What length of 1 inch straps go on what side?
Back when wood wasn’t the price of gold
I’m from the future and you just cut up $1,000,000 worth of lumber to save $150.
Great idea but the fan is geared so wrong for the task (maximum airflow minimum static pressure.). Put a centrifugal fan in and you are kicking ass.
What a great idea. This will do under my house to keep down mold or orders. As well as in the house as well. Now all you guys need to do is make it solar with a timer. Thank guys. Keep it up.
Absolutely epic video! Many thanks from Wales for your professional workmanship, patient tutorial for beginners like me and great video production.
No expert, but the absolute best filter is the DDF filter … .. .Double Door Filter in which you let air in one door and out the other, and if not then use at least a 2micron filter setup. You could use cheaper filters before running to this one for longevity. Next would be the amount of air-driven through per hour just like you were to measure a fish tank water filter. The bottom line is your shop could look lickety-split clean but without the proper filter, you could just be killing yourself. An easier way to build would be to run the fan into a washable bag filter, or two, no mess but not purty, but then really no build either… hang it on the wall and watch the bellows fill.
Awesome!
Find a way to add activated carbon for toxic fumes and vapors and you’ll have yourself the perfect shop companion.
You should build an encasement for this diy purifier: https://youtu.be/aw7fUMhNov8
I’ll be subscribing in case you do haha
Lol the wood is more expensive than these cheap 20β box fans
Impressive work πͺπ·
How well does it work?
i know this is going to sound snobby but i feel those wires should have been soldered
How can I buy one of those
QUESTIONS FROM AN IDIOT: Does the fan blow air towards the filters, or does it pull air through them? Why do you need so many filters?
Requested plans can’t wait to build this. Great video.
much easier, cheaper and more effective https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aw7fUMhNov8
No table saw so i will buy pre-cut 1/4 plywood pannels and 1×2 furring strips for dividers and support on the edges of the panels that will reduce weight of the unit considerably.
Great design thanks.
Please build me one. I would never be able to do this.
Nice video! I’m going to thumbs up and subscribe to support your channel! What kind of filters do you recommend?
I did the same with Woodglut π
Really appreciate that you made the video. I just constructed one and it works great! My lungs thank you so much!
The unit will work but not the most efficient. Check this out for an explanation on surface area. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aw7fUMhNov8 Your air has to go through 4 filters before it leaves which puts added pressure. Get some merv 13 filters along with the design mentioned in the above video. Great idea though! I’m going to build one using both your ideas and theirs.
Nice job, I had a jet filter system in my shop and I wonder how they would compare.
Do you have a smaller, lighter, less complicated design? Seems a bit extra for the sake of being extra.

I’m sure this works… but I wonder about the efficiency considering you are pulling air thru multiple filters, with what LOOKS like a leaky cabinet…. so air is being drawn in around the filters, not just thru them. Have you done anything to improve the air tightness?
thanks for your video. I have a garage/shop and was wondering where to put my filter. Floor, ceiling or elsewhere?
why do you use 3/4 ply. I would love to build it, but can I use 1/2 inch ply?
Thank you for this wonderful video. I am a single mother of two little ones and would love to have one of these in our house. Unfortunately no one to build it for us yet.
clever!
This is a great idea. I want to make 2 of these. Thank you for sharing this fan system with me. It will save me alot of money. Keep up the great videos.
great background music, commentary and visual.
earned a sub
Ok, looks really good, but way beyond my talent.
i know this is in a shop and the particulates you’re capturing are fairly big. But consider switching to a 20x20x4 mirv 13 filter. that will get pretty much everything including smoke and even covid-19. Also the filter in the front is kinda useless and will only really serve to decrease airflow.
other than that awesome job.
Just a little piece of advice in regards to the switch β¦ to make things simple, couldβve just added a smart outlet plug in & turned the fan on/off via a remote.
Obviously this is no use for this particular video now lol but just a future reference or to any others reading the comments that are deciding on using the same method(s) ππΌππΌ great work, though! New subscriber!
which direction is the in-flow? Through the 1" filters or the HEPA?
Thanks
How many cfms?
Awesome built and great idea
works even with the plastic still on filters. π
Check out the "this old house" episode about increasing the survace area of the filters, while decreasing the load on the fan, and increasing airflow.

wow ,, great idea. Thank you.
Well done!
I need the plans so that I may build this one for my shop.
I made a very easy air purifier https://youtu.be/VF0l8WPXxxE
Good job. Question …where do you place this ? (Floor ? Table top ? Eye level ? and how close to the tools : miter saw, table saw ? Etc
Thanks !
