Why haven’t you mentioned the word Starrett in this entire video.. The industry standard for excellence throughout the world…

  3. Joshua Rhoades on July 6, 2023 at 2:03 pm

I’ll bet you have learnt more from teaching than ever. I certainly do I am definetly meant to be teaching at this point in my life. When you are able to explain something in such detail it’s time to be passing it on…

  4. Joe Beaton on July 6, 2023 at 2:05 pm

Totally agree with this video!! And, Starrett is the way to go… Get what you pay for!!

  5. OfficialTree on July 6, 2023 at 2:06 pm

i’ve been using a horrible quality ikea square(ikea tools shouldn’t exist, they suck that much) and ive beenresearching which square to buy.

  6. jthepickle7 on July 6, 2023 at 2:06 pm

While working with a crew, whether I was lead or not, I would have the whole crew measure my Starrett 12" rule with their tape measures. Invariably some of the tape ends would have to be bent to read 12 inches. Also: If you forgot your level, you can plumb a post with a combo square and its bubble.

  8. BeQS on July 6, 2023 at 2:07 pm

Hello,is there any quality combination square with metric measurments?

  9. lign Good on July 6, 2023 at 2:09 pm

Nice video! Is there a PREMIUM stainless combination square? My Starrett set is nice, but honestly I hate it because it is impossible to keep rust away. I have been searching HARD and the only thing I can find is the Bridge City, which is made in China now but still costs over $200. Money is not an issue. I want quality (accuracy) and NO RUST!

  10. Michael K on July 6, 2023 at 2:10 pm

Well I threw out my Empire combo square (kept just the rule) and I am going to get a Starrett tomorrow…

Just bought a PEC blem 4" double…out of everything else seems like. I know this is an older video, but was just about to pull trigger on a few iguaging squares (because I’m cheap). Thanks for talking me down.

  16. Blayne on July 6, 2023 at 2:16 pm

I bought a machinist square at Menards and used it to set up all my tools. I didn’t realize it wasn’t actually square and made my projects hell for months!

  22. iPick 4Fun on July 6, 2023 at 2:23 pm

I ordered (recently) from Taytools a combination square, double square and machinist square. Well anything I get can and will be use against each other. I check them against each other, the combination square head is out of square by a few degrees. I got refund for the tool. I was hoping they will swap for a more accurate one. Very disappointed. Turns out, when put the blade into my el-cheapo combination square, it was amazingly accurate. That’s how I found out that the stamped blade is not even parallel along the two edges. I think I will order a replacement blade from them to use on my old square head. I think the BLEM tools are rejected for more than just blemish reasons.

  23. John Beretta on July 6, 2023 at 2:23 pm

Execellent work however I cannot pick or get points because your english so fast. could your add subtitle in your video so that people who are weak in listening english may be able to get your esteemed points. thank you

What brand is the black double square in the middle of the spread?

  25. Wolf on July 6, 2023 at 2:26 pm

I have an iGaging set. Seems fine to me but I get it. It’s a bit of a clone, fake product out of Chyna.

  26. Bobby Hiott on July 6, 2023 at 2:27 pm

My wife and I are building a B class camper van. I used this build of the van to buy several tools I think I will need to accomplish the task. Knowing absolutely nothing about wood working I have turned to YouTube for answers. You are a one stop shop for knowledge. Your presentation and delivery are comprehensive to the point I am actually learning enough to understand how all this stuff works.
    Thanks for lessons well done!

I just have a Swanson one. Cheap but accurate enough for my purposes. Im woodworking not building rockets. Lol

  30. Calvin C. Missick on July 6, 2023 at 2:32 pm

Combo squares and tri squares sounds better to use then my speed square

  31. Ian Watts on July 6, 2023 at 2:32 pm

whi is the ghost in the background to your left

  32. Doug Haber on July 6, 2023 at 2:33 pm

Great tips! I love my Starrette square and worth the money. For those on a budget, I find the plastic drafting triangle square are very accurate. I got mine at Staples. It was my first square for table saw setup. Be gentle and don’t ding them up though.

  33. Southern Yak Fishing on July 6, 2023 at 2:35 pm

Were you joking about igaging squares? I thought I finally found a quality tool at a price level I can deal with. This is based of feedback from many people. I was ready to order stuff from them, but are they not any good?

  34. Charles Arruda on July 6, 2023 at 2:36 pm

    *squares*

  35. Snake Plisken on July 6, 2023 at 2:36 pm

The iGaging squares are awesome. Great value and guaranteed to be at the same tolerance as Starrett they even have the Matt finish. Combo squares are not great at 45° because it has like 2” of surface and can be awkward to hold at 45°. I prefer double squares and bench squares (basically better rafter square) the only thing that needs improvement is the laser etching is a little light and gets hard to see after a few years.

(edit) I looked at the set of double squares at the local wood craft they are absolute garbage, so I went to the iGaging website and they no longer have a guarantee of any kind. They did improve the etching though.

  36. Mark Wiens on July 6, 2023 at 2:36 pm

I’m new to this kind of tool so I was looking around for some help and came across this video. I just received a brand new Starrett combination square and when I went to slide the rule it put scratches into the finish. Oops, I just made my own Blem square! So did I do something wrong or is the head defective?

  37. 🇷🇺Andrei on July 6, 2023 at 2:38 pm

Dang I just carefully checked my new Home Depot Empire combo square.
The flat aluminum edge isn’t even straight. 🤣

  38. Oliwan on July 6, 2023 at 2:40 pm

why aren’t you using REAL solid squares? In Germany no carpenter would use these you are showing for checking a real square

  39. scorpion068 on July 6, 2023 at 2:40 pm

Ill be damned. Never knew there was a scribe on my square 😆

  40. Ogsan1 on July 6, 2023 at 2:40 pm

I have learned so much today from you. Mind blown. You have motivated a new wood worker in the best way. Thank you so much. You rock…

  41. DesignedByTaylor on July 6, 2023 at 2:41 pm

Are you related to jimmy kimmel?

  42. maxgainz on July 6, 2023 at 2:43 pm

I just bought one on China express, cast iron/ steel (no alu) handle and stainless steel ruler.

The finish is no where near Starret ofc. But this thing is nicer than most of the big brand ones..

for like 12,- instead of 300,- for the same Starret.

  43. Harry Powers on July 6, 2023 at 2:43 pm

Hi Jonathan, does Starrett actually make their 6” combination square or is there a third party involved?

  44. Adam Monson on July 6, 2023 at 2:43 pm

where’d you get that marking knife?

  45. Isaac H on July 6, 2023 at 2:45 pm

Anybody else cringe every time Johnathan says “Star-ret” instead of “Stare-et”…..I mean I hate being that guy, but it’s always been a job site peeve of mine….just like people swinging their “East-wing” hammers. 😂😬

    But the info was great!

  46. J V on July 6, 2023 at 2:52 pm

    They also have built-in levels.

  47. T'willy on July 6, 2023 at 2:52 pm

What’s the difference between the Starrett 9-12-4R and 435-12-4R? Could quality be of concern.

  48. Jay Joost on July 6, 2023 at 2:58 pm

Thanks a bunch for all the info. Great video!!

  49. Tommy on July 6, 2023 at 2:58 pm

4:34 The two lines will always be parallel when they are drawn from the same (straight) line.

I just connect all corners of a square diagonally to find the centre
