Furniture Finish & Wood Finishing Tips and Techniques

When building things from wood, that last step is applying some sort of a finish to help protect and preserve the wood, and in many cases to enhance the look. Because this process can take as long as the building of the project with most of the time taken up waiting for the top coat to dry, I often glaze over the steps without going into too much detail. This video is details the steps I use for almost every finish I apply including Osmo, Varnishes, Tung Oil and more, to the wood projects I build. And don’t forget to check out the article on woodworkweb and if you have questions, ask them on our Forums, there are lots of people there, including Colin, who can help you with your finishing questions.

What do you like to use to wipe down the board to make sure all the sawdust is completely cleaned off before finishing… Thanks again for the video

This is excellent, thank you for sharing. Did you say that you have a video on sanding? I am not sure what you mean by sanding with water, or wet sanding.

Hi Colin, this was a great overview of how we finish our work. This topic can be discussed for hours and still won’t be sufficient time to cover half of it. lol Every process of finishing is different and each is almost always fine tuned for a given project. I hope you will consider putting other videos together on this critical topic as I think they will be well received by any woodworker. A great job on this Colin.

Hi. May I ask….I just finished TV desk made from OAK…and I love the way it loos and feels now….I didt put any finish on it… like oil or poly. As I worry about it to change color or texture. Do you think its nessesary to put any finish? what will happend if I dont. I understad the water marks if something wet is placed. but apart from that? Looking forward your answer/help.

I am painting white the inside of cabinets that I have made. I am doing this to have a nice inside finish. Should I use semi gloss paint? Should I use sanding between coats? I want a shiny glossy finish that is easy to clean.
