Chip breaker. Not really properly named? Yes it is properly named, it’s just that you don’t know it. It’s called a cap iron. Setting it correctly (not like what you are doing here) will make the difference between getting a smooth finish or one with tear out.
Go to flea markets, and look for old Millers Falls planes. Excellent planes, and great value for the dough.
So many of the videos of guys doing presentations in front of audiences have horrible audio where you can’t understand what the guy is saying. I really appreciate how easy it is to hear Mike and how little background noise comes through. This is one of the best sharpening videos I have seen.

If you discolor A2 while sharpening it, don’t worry about it. A2 is air hardening. Annealing it is a long process that you are not going to do with a grinder.
"Why would anyone want to sharpen a handsaw"? Right. Just throw out your $200.00 handsaw and buy a new one.
Mike I really appreciate all of your videos. I’ve struggled with sighting the set of the blade, I think I’ll give your finger trick a try. Also I really need to build your angled shooting board for shooting long miters. I have a question you didn’t address in your video though. When Is it that you use your smoothing plane? I’ve tried:
-Right after boards come out of the jointer and planer, but these parts tend to get dinged up over the rest of the build. Also, it can make boards slightly different widths and thicknesses which can throw off joinery.
-Right after cutting joinery. But this has a tendency of throwing off precise joinery that I cut otherwise. That snug dado is now loose, or where the tenon board meets the mortise board is not quite level anymore.
-After glue up. Even though this seems like the ideal time to use the smoother since it’s time to surface prep for finishing… it’s hard to hold a whole project still for planing, or boards meet at perpendicular angles causing tear out.
I very much prefer the surface a plane leaves over sanding, but I’m struggling to find the appropriate time to do this step.

The new CBN grinder wheels keep the steel cool and cut faster. They also stay flat and don’t dish like white wheels do.

Yah I sharpen up to the 16k Shapton stone. Doesn’t get sharper than that

Instead of picking up the audio from the camera for the audience questions, you should just subtitle it on the video. Even with the volume up its difficult to understand. Since this is video, reading would be better.

Mike has always had a great pace, poignant teaching points he’s not going to miss, and qualifies his opinions with rational positions. I’ve not seen Mike and Vic together in a setting, but I think it’d be great to have a tag team session with these two on a subject that had some constraining parameters (i.e. joinery plane and chisel method in casework or something that has both a technical and finesse aspect).
I just purchased a new Stanley 12-137 No.62 Low Angle Jack Plane. ($135.00) I’m going to use what I learned on this video to get it ready to use. I’m excited! Thank you for this demonstration. I’ve never had a decent plane so this will be a first for me.

After watching (a portion of ) this video, I realize I don’t like Mike Pekovich. He puts down other woodworkers and questions/discredits their techniques in order to support his own ideas as if they are the only methods that work. After 40 minutes, I couldn’t take any more of his arrogance and stopped watching. I recall a few years back, I think it was Steve Ramsey of "Woodworking For Mere Mortals" complaining about some of the Fine Woodworking characters. I wonder if he was referring to Mike Pekovich?

This is all solid advice, of course. Still I can’t help hearing a comment track in my head saying "now let’s rub this 200 dollar diamond plate on that 150 dollar stone so we can sharpen our 400 dollar plane". This is content targeted at beginning woodworkers, yet we are looking at 1500 bucks worth of equipment on that table. I think if instructors were more candid about that, people would run away screaming.

Well that was a heawy load of crap. Sharpening is not that difficult! Waterstones, ceramic and what not! Just a load of bullshit!
