Hand Tools Only: Dovetail Box Made with ZERO Electricity

Hand Tools Only: Dovetail Box Made with ZERO Electricity

I shaved a few cents off of my electric bill by using only hand tools to build this cherry dovetail box to hold my chisels. It only took me about ten times longer to make. Worth it!

I don’t think a woodworker is defined by whether they use only hand tools, some power tools, or even a CNC to build their projects, but I do think that every woodworker should have at least some hand tool experience. It’s a little slower, but if done properly it’s more precise, and the satisfaction you get from building something the same way it would have been built 200 years ago is immense.

What Mike Dolganov said “Good job, man! No music, no noise. No annoying intro. Just pure woodworking. Love it!”

  8. john hancock on April 4, 2022 at 6:09 pm

Hey great video and many this will help bit when you where assembling the lid and the board was floating around on the glue, just sprinkle a small amount of table salt on the glue. The grit from the salt will keep the piece from floating around and the water in the glue will dissolve it .

You could save a lot of time making only two reference surfaces at the start and making the edges square when cutting.

  17. David DeJulio on April 4, 2022 at 6:23 pm

Thanks for sharing. Relaxing and informative to watch. Also like your description. All great experience. I don’t like when any crafts person gets highbrow about "their" process. Look forward to a hand too only project of my own soon!

My 7 year old son is SUPER drawn to working with his hands and is dying to work with wood. Any hand tools you’d recommend for a kiddo to get started?

A+ for the unexpected reveal at the end.

  24. Neil Hendricks on April 4, 2022 at 6:30 pm

…mesmerizing. thank you. art in motion. the end? perfection in storytelling. not only do you reveal your talent, skill, and insight relative to woodworking, you do so emotionally as well. just an opinion. blessings to you and all those who love you and who you love. Merry Christmas.

  25. John Schillo on April 4, 2022 at 6:32 pm

great tutorial – I agree that there was no need for chatter. The music was the sawing to set the perfect mood. thank you.

  26. T R on April 4, 2022 at 6:33 pm

Well done DK. I enjoyed watching you transform the rough sawn board into a cool box (would be a great presentation style gift box). And, beyond watching your videos for enjoyment, I’m paying attention to your approach and preparing to employ more hand-tools in my woodworking. Enjoyed the clever ending too. That was fun!

  27. Clark Reid on April 4, 2022 at 6:34 pm

I love the silent treatment here… with exception of the sawing of course, no problem with that. I’ve come to realize that after years of investing in good power tools, I really should have started with investing in learning the basics first and mastering hand tools before moving on to power tools. I couldn’t imagine sawing a board through the widest side by hand like that and then taking a plane to it with the aim of getting that kind of result.
Looks like I have a LOT of work to do!

  28. Mary Mary on April 4, 2022 at 6:34 pm

    Fabulous, thank you. 👌

  29. Ben van der Feen on April 4, 2022 at 6:35 pm

Good work DK, I was put off by many woodworking videos because they show off machinery instead of craftmanship. Yours is thankfully different, how real woodworking should be!

  35. anthony morales on April 4, 2022 at 6:42 pm

I don’t what others will think when planing a really dry board I use warm water on the surface. It softens the surface fibers and makes the job a whole lot easier

  36. EducationDZ on April 4, 2022 at 6:43 pm

I think one of the hardest part, would be to cut a piece of thin wood into two thin parts .

  37. Toini Shigwedha on April 4, 2022 at 6:43 pm

Had to search this😡cos of an exam😢😂which I fear….it has given me a clue though plus i’m starting to loose the fear😞😞

  39. Arif Budiman Taqwa on April 4, 2022 at 6:45 pm

THIS IS THE REAL WOODWORKING SKILLS !!!
I’ve hear many times peoples bragging about how good their woodworking skills. But I ask him if he use powertools, then he say Yes. I will say that is no skills, he can because he have powertools.
What if he doesn’t have powertools ? I bet he can’t do it.

  40. Keith Hughes on April 4, 2022 at 6:46 pm

    Simple and inspiring. Thanks.

  46. Christian Tyler on April 4, 2022 at 6:55 pm

Getting into woodworking but enjoy not using power tools.. realizing how important and difficult it is to get a good hand plane.. any recommendations would be appreciated for someone with one funky block plane

  47. philrab66 on April 4, 2022 at 6:57 pm

I started my first hardwood box today, oak. After using pine it feels like iron to plane or chisel. Is that cherry you are using ?
