Handplanes 101 – beginner level (part names + assembly)
Here is a look at a very common handplane and I will give you the basic terms you need for the parts of the plane, as well as a quick tutorial on how to disassembly and reassemble the plane. These vintage tools are fantastic for traditional woodworking, and are a must have in any workshop.

Nicely done! Today I pulled out a Buck Brothers plane I bought who knows when to shave some epoxy on a live-edge slab I’m working on, and I realized I really needed to understand this seemingly simple tool better. Your video was exactly what I needed. Thanks!
Thank you
I just came across an entire craft of these that was my grandfathers. I also have a big box of them that was my step fathers. I need to start going through them. Thanks for the beginner vid on these great tools.
A great primer to the world of planes. I learned a few things, and that’s always good. We all should have a good understanding of hand tools for times when power tools and finished products aren’t available. I’ll be looking to add a few planes to my collection of hand tools, soon. Thanks for sharing.
I inherited my dads old handplanes. Now I know how to tear them down. Thanks for sharing.
I just bought an old Stanley model at the flea market , it was kind of rough, took it apart and cleaned and sanded followed up with some steel wool, Just wanted to confirm I was putting it back together correctly (the only guide I had was the way it came apart) Your Video gave me all the info I needed. Thanks, Great information!.
Is there 102?
Awesome Video,..Thanks!! You were a great help. It wasn’t for you, I would have never been able to assemble this Stanley no. 5 Bench Plane
Thanks
Just found out that my antiques-fair-find Stanley is from the 30’s. Thanks for the helpful video.
Treating cast iron is quite simple….not like learning the plane. Lol
Check out the Woodglut plans if you want to make it better.

Great stuff, good explanation with no assumptions…..many thanks.
I need to purchase the screw that holds the lever cap on my Stanley #5. Can you tell me the description of the screw (length, size, threads per inch). Great video for the beginner like me!
Good vid, thank you. Im restoring my grandads old bailey so this is a good point of reference.
Great stuff! Just what I was looking for. Thank you!
Thanks for the breakdown
This video is the best! 😊
Fantastic! I spent $1000 on five nice planes and could never get them right until now! Thanks!
Carpentry is cool, and so old school, but be careful ive seen people with serious handplane addictions
Total waffle.
