While I totally agree with it that this guy IS a scumbag, on the other side of the coin, these companies who refuse to hire and pay employees to run registers sort of "get what they deserve" as well too!! And lets be honest here, I have seen computers that "rip off customers" also, speaking purely from the technical evils of self check out!!
Back almost 40 years ago as a young man, working for a grocery store chain, known as P&C here in New York State, (in the early 1980s) I once saw a bottle of mustard, get rung up as a $50 bag of cow manure, on one of the first register bar code scanners then!! At that time a bottle of French’s Mustard only cost around $0.59 or so, yet running it across the scanner shocked the woman purchasing it!!
The point is these self check out lanes are NOT as "safe" or "reliable" as people assume they are, and they are still mindless machines, that are PROGRAMED by people who can and WILL make mistakes!!! And I personally don’t want to pay $80 for a $3 package of screws, or spend $30 on a $5 paint brush, especially with a machine that could care less if I am being robbed or not!!!
FURTHER Home Depot just a couple of years ago was literally "ROBBED" by a hacked glitch in their card readers at all registers!!! The hack, not only stole money, but also took the personal data of those folks who used their debit and credit cards to pay for merchandise at Home Depot Stores!! That being the case, the only way I pay for things now is basically with either Cold, Hard Cash, gift cards, or my prepaid credit card, just so my bank account IS PROTECTED!! Sure it costs me a little bit more, as I have to pay $4 to withdraw money from my bank’s ATM machine, and $5 to put money on my Prepaid Credit Card…but in short that is $10 for "piece of mind" to know my life savings is not going to be stolen from me by hackers in the Ukraine!! But at the same time I sort of get fed up, with many of these stores that had 30 cash registers and only TWO OF THEM are open and they have lines that stretch out the back door of the store!! Because they refuse to hire more people!!!
I knew folks that would literally fill up a cart and just walk out. The amazing part was, not 1 person said a damn thing to this kid. I watched him numerous times. Or he would take a receipt and go shopping then return it right in front of them weather they knew or not. Dude didn’t give a flying f$#@

Will corporations close this gaping hole in their honor system?

He jumped into the passenger seat and the driver took off!! I don’t know if they were ever caught, but soon after they had locked cases for the more expensive tools. Do you think HD eats those costs? NOPE, you and I pay for the anti shoplifting stuff, locked cases, cameras, extra employees, etc. It’s a sad time we live in!!☹️
I don’t mind self checkout in grocery stores as long as it isn’t the ONLY option, I especially like it at drug stores since I’m just buying 1-2 items. I HATE it at Home Depot because it’s one of the worst implementations and it just slows stuff down… And I tend to be buying 10 or so items at Home depot. So it just wastes my time, and some stores ONLY have self checkout open.

I never EVER take what isn’t given to me. I taught my kids, “Steal and daddy breaks the fingers” plus one day you will have to answer to GOD.
I hate going into Home Depot anymore because the thieves have caused them to lock up every item I want to purchase. I went to HD to feel the size and weight of a chainsaw. It took me 15 minutes to find a person who unlock the cage. Then, when I went to go lift the chainsaw up, it was cable down so tightly you couldn’t even lift it off the shelf. Total waste of my time. It’s not Home Depot’s fault but it’s not going to get my business either.
Theft is wrong, but if they make us check out ourselves, there will always be theft. Stop the self check out and train your staff. They won’t because they need to keep that billion dollar profit margin. Theft is very wrong but stop tempting people.

It’s not only the cost of the loss that’s passed on to honest consumers but also the cost of the upgrades to their security apparatus in terms of cages, lock, cameras and video recording equipment as well as added security personnel, what really gripes me is that they also calculate higher profit margins into the matrix along with escalated insurance cost to cover their losses, they know they can get away with it as they have everyone convinced it’s the "thieves fault" and since they have put the smaller stores out of business we have limited choice than to pay their inflated prices, this is plain corporate greed and they are making more profits than ever before, I don’t agree with the thief scumbag but don’t for a minute believe HD isn’t laughing about it all the way to the bank.

Home Depot is so stupid that a guy returned a comlete set of car tires there one night at the North Avenue store in Chicago. Home Depot doesn’t sell tire, go figure.
Who gives a fuck about these monopolies and the foreign trash they sell? Once you smash these losers to pieces, then you can open a mom and pop hardware store with cashiers, community, quality, and everything else that was once good. The costs are not passed on to you. They just say that. How much are you going to pay for a lawn chair? $1200? So that guy that just stole a generator, you’re going to pay for it with your lawn chair? No you won’t because you would simply go elsewhere or build a lawn chair out of 2x4s. lol Home Despot isn’t even owned by the founder anymore. I chased a guy stealing a cart full of tools out of lowes everyone let him go I said not on my watch I chased him all the way to a motel down the street I told him push the cart to me or I’ll call the cops he got mad said I don’t even work there I replied no I don’t but I work every day so I don’t steal when I got back to lowes the manager pulled me aside thanked me and discounted everything I purchased and said don’t do it again

I hate the self checkout also and I told the customer service the same thing . I dont understand why they dont get rid of the self checkout lines.

I’m in line at HD and watch on an almost daily basis show people walking out with stuff in their arms. I complain to employees and they say they are NOT allowed to do anything.
Three times I’ve seen people fill a cart and get in the "Return Line" from inside the store and get store credit on a card. I complained and they say again they are NOT allowed to do anything.

You’re talking about stores not prosecuting small thefts, and ppl getting more ballsy, you’re exactly right.
The thing is, the big thefts wouldn’t be very common, if they prosecuted small thefts. On the same point, total store losses on small price items is greater than big ticket items.
Not prosecuting the boomer generation for all these small thefts, have normalized it, across our lives. Corporations, govt, and police… That’s what is ruining our country…

Customer’s wonder why they are charged 10-20 times more than "chuck in a truck". They don’t realize the cost of doing business when you’re legit. It doesn’t feel good when I raise prices due to cost increases but you have to. My father in law looked depressed when I said an addition on his house would be a minimum of $250/sqft.
