How I make an Axe Block / Carving Stump for Green Woodworking

How I make an Axe Block / Carving Stump for Green Woodworking

I wondered whether to make this video as I feel there’s nothing here you couldn’t figure out.

However, I know a lot of folks end up with crappy axe blocks or no axe block at all when they wing it – so here’s how I make mine in a consistent and repeatable way to get a useful block.

You’ll need some way to bore a good size hole, my T auger is around 1 1/2″. The rest can be done with a hatchet and a saw.

Perfect. Exactly the video I’ve been looking for. Math and measuring give me anxiety. Thank you.

Awesome. If I only had conifer available, would that be suitable for a chopping block?

Is a 1inch diameter auger going to make a strong enough leg? Yours looks about 1.5inch? I’ve been finding it hard to find these nice old augers in big sizes

Very succinct and helpful! I just built one, but wasn’t sure about the height.

Does it matter how green or seasoned the block or the legs are?

I have a question, where do you/how do you get your wood for spoon carving? Great video btw.

Excellent video! A nice presentation at a perfect length. I really appreciate you sharing your wisdom on this, as I’ve always just used a tall round of white spruce, but that’s almost too heavy and hard to move around an indoor workshop. Thanks for the inspiration, friend!
