Creating woodworking plans is a great way to share your project with others. It’s also a great way for woodworking content creators to generate some revenue through selling of those plans. I have sold over $20,000 worth of woodworking plans on Etsy. If you have a woodworking business and you would like to create plans but don’t know where to start (or want to improve your current process) this video is for you!
I get a lot of questions regarding my build plans – what programs I use & how do I make them. In this video I will attempt to answer those questions so because I think the information could be useful to others out there looking to do the same. I go over my thought process when creating plans, the specific programs I use, and even what platform to sell them on.
Thank you so much for watching and feel free to ask questions in the comments section regarding topics I didn’t get to in the video!

Splendidly to see Woodglut have new plans which helped me save some money and energy for this construction.
Excellent video, this was just what I was looking for!
One suggestion I’d offer since you said you’re looking to move away from PowerPoint is the Affinity suite of apps. They have Publisher (Indesign replacement), Photo (Photoshop replacement), and Designer (Illustrator replacement). I’ve been using those for about 6 months now and haven’t looked back. They are a one time purchase as opposed to a subscription which is awesome and I have yet to find a tool from Adobe that’s missing in Affinity. Didn’t mean to make this sound like a sales pitch, I just really enjoy these apps and I think you might as well!
I thought it’s 1million years
Were you going to include a link to Kevin Kennedy’s Fusion 360 course?
Full help with projects on the Woodglut website.
Oh man. I wanted a video to tell me to stay with sketchup over F360 LOL. Maybe it’s time to make the plunge. Cost is a factor, but it’s not *the* factor. I’ll give Kevin’s tutorial a whirl. Thanks
Thanks mate. Awesome video
Great video and content as always!
great discussion, thanks for the information.
what is Id vs powerpoint? I can,t find that anywhere …thanks
With a pond or river near by YOU BET
Christian Mance – would look awesome in your big window…..
Looking at the free vs paid Fusion 360 program. Any major differences in features that would make you recommend paid over free?
How do you secure your plans? To stop others from copying them?
Jesus! literally just asked you in another video for this video! haha
Thank you soo much.
Thank you!
SketchUp used to be owned by Google back in the days when it was for free
This is awesome. Thanks! I need to get going on my first plan!
$500 for a "once in a while" guy obviously isn’t the right choice. Do they have any plans for a cheaper model?
As always, very appreciative of folks sharing their process and helpful info. this was really informative.
Wow this is a great video… Thank you so much
I always see these amazing plans drawn up for projects on Pinterest and I have been wanting to make my graph paper plans better… This is super helpful
Thanks so much for this! Definitely filled a need with this video!

Thanks for the intro to Fusion 360. I was learning Sketch Up as a newbie woodwork hobbyist, and it’s a pain!; even with some help from videos from the Pros. And your plans includes everything for someone trying it out the first time; unlike some others that left me guessing.
Thanks.
Hey Shop Nation, just a note re: getting your plans to a point where they have no words. I totally get what you’re going for re: aligning to lego-style plans that are internationally understandable, but here’s something to consider: there are a lot of people who are completely unable to use lego *because* they’re entirely visual plans. There are a variety of different learning styles, but there are a lot of folks who learn through words rather than visually.
Maybe a better goal would be to get your plans to a point where they *could* be understood without words (e.g. using symbols for tools required), but not to a point where that was the *only* way they’ll be able to be understood. I’ve seen it a lot in software development where folks try and simplify things to make them easier, but then they simplify/streamline things to a point where they make things inadvertently harder.
I love the consideration, time and effort you put into your plans 🙂
Could you do a video similar to this on the topic of how you film, edit and publish? I like your cinematic style. I’ve asked people before that say “my wife “, that won’t work in my case. Thanks.
Thx man.. Why don’t you make your plans in fusion?
Great video! You use powerpoint, please let us know when and what other tool you get instead of powerpoint. Thanks!
mans said get fusion 360 bro this program cost $650 EVERY YEAR
Ha, can’t believe I haven’t seen this one sooner. Also recommended Kevin K in a vid (his free playlist). Fusion 360 is soo good and once learned is like riding a bike. Please don’t quit YouTube bro. Cheers!
So you have to pay a monthly fee for fusion 360?
love how you make your plans and your right visuals does help! I went and checked your plans in Etsy but they are mostly workbenches or things you need in the workshop, do you have woodworking plans for furniture?
Have you used the 3D CONNEXION controller yet. This is a game-changer for Fusion 360!
If you like woodworking, just look for Woodprix plans.

I would love to learn Fusion. I’ve used it but I have barely scratched the surface. It would be really cool to offer plans one day. But there is also a lot of benefit to doing this. One thing I’ve found recently is that I have found free plans that are ok. But that I tweak to meet my needs. I want to make my own plans that I can print off for my own personal use. Maybe they use pocket holes and I"m planning to use dominos. Maybe they suggest assembling one way and during my build I find that a different assembly process works better for me. Or… i just want to change a few dimensions. I hand write and draw pictures so that I can recreate my tweaked version. Sure would be a lot easier to make plans. Or… same thing for the things that I create on my own. Thanks for sharing this.
Outstanding video! Super helpful.
Really enjoyed the legos concept. Question about Fusion 360 – do you use the commercial version that allows you to sale products or does exporting images into powerpoint allow you to bypass that?
Just bought your plans for the "perfect garage workbench" and they are fantastic. After studying them for one evening I was able to really understand the whole build and make some decisions on customizations I want to make… and some customizations I had considered but discarded as too complicated. Can’t wait to get started building. The plans actually got me excited, lol!
Thanks for your videos. I used your shop miter saw plans but learned that I have to adapt, improvise and overcome when putting others plans in my shop. My space was shorter and needed to shorten things. I would like to get into the Fusion 3D but HOLY COY, $495 A YEAR!!! Can you imagine how many clamps that would buy 🙂
subbed bro. good video.
Hey Travis Just discovered your channel and love it looking at setting up a new shop! Please
Excuse my ignorance if it’s clearly stated somewhere are your plans available in metric dimensions? Live in Australia on the metric system! Keep up the great work mate 👍
Great video
I just bought my first set of your plans, for the Shmedium Workbench, and my first reaction was, "HOLY SH!*!!!!! 95 pages! What the?!". But I looked through them, and found them extremely detailed. Great job! Very impressive.
Thanks for the info 👍
What kind of microphone arm is that? Do you have an affiliate link for that?
https://youtu.be/Lzm621Lp1oA?list=WL&t=200
Excellent video, thanks for all the useful info!
i cannot begin to tell you how glad i am that youtube’s algorithm suggested your channel to me! between your money transparency and now this plan creation videos, you’ve given me answers to questions no one wanted to answer. i am very grateful. btw, if i can make one little suggestion, and others can chime in if i am off my rocker, please slow down just a little bit. you cover a lot of information. but you do it so fast that my tiny brain can’t process it that fast and i need to stop the video just so that it can catch up.
On average, how long does it take for you to create a simple set of plans that you would sell on your Etsy store, workbench as an example, in F360?
