How to make a Bathroom Vanity Light // Woodworking | I Like To Make Stuff

See how I made a simple vanity light for my bathroom as we prep our house for sale!

We’re getting our house ready to sell (we’re moving) so I am finally getting around to doing a bunch of projects that I’ve put off for 9 years. One of those projects is to replace a severely dated light fixture in our kids bathroom. In this quick project I made a new light fixture to put above the mirror using a reclaimed piece of wood flooring and some basic light fixtures from the big box home center. It’s easy to customize and anyone can do it!

  3. zip customs on March 15, 2022 at 5:14 pm

What kind of blade do you use to cut the plexi glass

  4. Andrew Mercier on March 15, 2022 at 5:16 pm

If you start at 5:58 the closest bulb is a great example to show that vibrations can unthread things.

Can u show any video to install bathroom fan

  11. SubArc on March 15, 2022 at 5:26 pm

The wiring looks loose and janky as hell. I’d solder, shrink tube and secure the wiring if I were to attempt this. The final product looks amazing though and I like how turned the plexiglas into faux frosted glass.

  13. neroforte on March 15, 2022 at 5:29 pm

is this the same house where you made your secret bookshelf door? if it is, the buyers are going to have a very awesome house!

  14. Rudi Niemeijer on March 15, 2022 at 5:32 pm

Har har, "one thing that is universal between all of them is that you need to switch off the power before messing with any light fixture at all" 🙂

  15. KYAquaria on March 15, 2022 at 5:33 pm

dont really like the fixture but i enjoyed the video

1.- There is light going out from above ( that is wrong )
2.- Use 12v. Bulbs they last more than 120v/230v

  17. Dronom po Putleru on March 15, 2022 at 5:34 pm

1×6 for 7-8$…. Good old days with "bad" administration…

  18. D. S. on March 15, 2022 at 5:34 pm

Fire Hazard. Bare minimum you should put a label in the box so that no one ever uses anything but LED’s in there.

  19. Joshua Edwards on March 15, 2022 at 5:35 pm

Unless I missed it, you should have sealed the top. Could of had just had another lens and screwed it on. Dust will collect on those lights causing poorer output, bugs will die inside the fixture and be visible on the acrylic bottom. I understand why you didn’t do it when you made the fixture because it would have been hard the way you went about it to mount the fixture if you had a top. There are ways to get around that though. Food for thought on your next one. Otherwise, looks awesome.

  20. Dominic Spatz on March 15, 2022 at 5:35 pm

Could not believe that those wire nuts are safe at all 😆 i mostly use connectors offered by Wago (German company)

  21. patrick holcomb on March 15, 2022 at 5:38 pm

"burnish" your miter joints, it finishes the joints nicely

  22. LOWNIA on March 15, 2022 at 5:39 pm

    Why no ledstrip?

  23. Marek Novak on March 15, 2022 at 5:39 pm

Nice, but I think you should have put the same acrylic or something at the top, so dust and flies and stuff don’t just fall in there…

  24. anna alm on March 15, 2022 at 5:40 pm

wow… first video I watch on this channel – really great looking light!! perhaps not a project for beginners like myself 😀

  25. Joshua Kosar on March 15, 2022 at 5:43 pm

Lexan and plexiglass are two different materials… plexiglass is acrylic or Lucite, lexan is polycarbonate.

  26. Rb Smith on March 15, 2022 at 5:43 pm

I prefer covered fluorescent which is brighter in 1965 house and electricity is lot less.

  27. Ray B. on March 15, 2022 at 5:44 pm

Update your bathroom fixture?? Have you looked around at fixtures? They are all so similar that you might as well have left it there. The only difference is PRICE! The new owners would probably think it’s a new fixture anyway. Would have saved you money and time. But, I do like your replacement. Good job!!!

  28. Bob Nicholas on March 15, 2022 at 5:45 pm

I made this Bob it was great.  There are so many ways to jazz it up. I had my garage shop rewired and they used ceramic light fixtures on the ceilings.  I had extras they were $1.25 each and made perfect inside.  I am a painter and I did a painted piece of hardboard for the front that can be changed any time.  I got the plexi out of a cheap picture frame so it was free.  I got the LED light bulbs for free from a welcome gift from our power and light company.  So it was $6. I have been messing withy lighting in my art studio and I am going to do some variation of this.. Thanks.

how would one get rid of the uneven frosting/oil marks maybe? on the lexan?

  30. ANGELORUM T on March 15, 2022 at 5:45 pm

    I LOVE IT!

  31. arfunder on March 15, 2022 at 5:45 pm

Hey. That thing you use for connecting the wires. Is it safe? I always used a kinf of box with screws and holes. Never saw it. Does it give any kind of problem if use the "boxes"?.

  32. Robby Palmer on March 15, 2022 at 5:46 pm

Another good source for 1x6s is pre made fence slats. Lowes sells them cheap

  33. lopaka76 on March 15, 2022 at 5:47 pm

I’ve seen something similar on Pinterest and I’ve wanted to make one but not exactly sure how. Now I know and knowing is half the battle. Lol. Thanks.

  36. Nathan on March 15, 2022 at 5:48 pm

Congrats you got rid of a light from the 80s and replaced it with a light from the 80s…

  37. ShaolinDave McAlias on March 15, 2022 at 5:50 pm

i’m hoping to build a couple light fixtures soon.
my idea is to also put in a single LED strip that will power on as a nightlight whenever the main light is off, i need to figure out how to wire that up.

  38. Pat B on March 15, 2022 at 5:53 pm

Light looked nice but would not be up to code here.

  39. Nixie on March 15, 2022 at 5:55 pm

The design is really nice, especially the rustic looks, however, not putting lexan on top, will allow for moisture and dust to get accumulated inside the lamp, and it will be a nightmare to clean. :/

  46. FlensHammer on March 15, 2022 at 6:05 pm
