How to make a dust collector with a wet/dry vac | I Like To Make Stuff

In my new shop, I needed dust collection, but didn’t have room for a huge collector. Instead, I used a wet/dry vac and a cyclone, along with some blast gates.

A list of parts that I used can be found at

DIY Dust Collection System (using a wet-dry vac)

Metal ducting only in a dust collection system. plastic/pvc isnt safe, it can create fire due electrostatic dust explosion.

  2. 27airball on December 31, 2021 at 8:09 pm

My workshop is about the same size as yours. What size shop vac are you using.

  3. Optimus Prime on December 31, 2021 at 8:09 pm

The sweep ,and the switch set this video apart from the rest.

  4. Tumdace on December 31, 2021 at 8:11 pm

Are you using 2.5" hosing for everything?

  5. Bob Abooey on December 31, 2021 at 8:12 pm

I was all pumped up till we got to the electrician segment

  6. Arnab Musouwir on December 31, 2021 at 8:12 pm

    The sweep was sweet

  7. The Woodworking Husky on December 31, 2021 at 8:14 pm

This is an awesome system! I am planning on building a portable version of this to add to my mobile workbench that I made. It will definitely be handy as the weather is starting to get colder, so I can work inside!

  8. Kevin Hodder on December 31, 2021 at 8:15 pm

Great video – anyone know where to buy cheap hosing like that in Canada? I can only find PowerTec for like $100 an inch.

  9. Richard Knezevic on December 31, 2021 at 8:18 pm

you wire the switch the wrong way , the light of the switch should be on when the vacuum is running , your light is on when the vacuum is off

  10. Michelle Escarfullery on December 31, 2021 at 8:18 pm

    you
    got all the hose

  11. Patrick Murphy on December 31, 2021 at 8:19 pm

This man is a f*cking genius. His IQ percentile must be in the high 99.9s.

  13. Fred B on December 31, 2021 at 8:25 pm

one day i will make this haha

  14. GriffinGraffixDesign on December 31, 2021 at 8:30 pm

What kind of shopvac did you have? Some are 2.5HP, some 4.5HP… what’s a good minimum for this kind of setup? Thanks!!

  15. Andrew Wong on December 31, 2021 at 8:30 pm

    Genius

  16. jesse garcia on December 31, 2021 at 8:31 pm

What shop vac do you use?

  17. Jeremy Watson on December 31, 2021 at 8:32 pm

Thank you for just getting on with it and getting the ideas over. I learned more per second than most I’ve seen. I’m doing a version of this project. This helped heaps.

  18. Joshua Miller on December 31, 2021 at 8:32 pm

What kind of shop vac did you use? And did you only use one? Awesome tutorial

  19. Gregory Vrooman on December 31, 2021 at 8:32 pm

neutral is the tall slot. Feed or ‘hot’ is the short slot

I like your videos because you speed up the process. I hate long videos about people talking more than doing the things promised in the title. Congrats!

Random comment for the YouTube algorithm.

  23. Glenn Campbell on December 31, 2021 at 8:39 pm

FYI when wiring outlets, wrap the wire around the screw clockwise.

  24. Rob D on December 31, 2021 at 8:39 pm

Please take this as constructive criticism because of some real safety concerns. DO NOT put both ground wires under the screw on that switch. That screw is designed to accept one #12 or #14 wire. Pig tail them. DO put a cover on the receptacle box. Its both a shock and fire hazard without one. You probably have some strong areas of knowledge to share but ask yourself honesty if you’re good enough at electrical to be giving advice. I hope you take this in the intended spirit.

Oh man….OCD went into the red when he didnt complete the silicone bead all the way around the lid/dust cyclone connection. Being OCD can really be aggravating. I literally tensed up when there were little gaps 😂😂😂

  26. Meadow Fjordside on December 31, 2021 at 8:39 pm

You may like to make stuff but you should learn how to make stuff right.
This is pure slop and your wiring is scary if not dangerous and illegal. I would recommend removing this video for liability protection.

  27. bill smith on December 31, 2021 at 8:40 pm

the fact that you left some bare spots with caulking has my OCD on fire!

  28. Joe G.P. on December 31, 2021 at 8:40 pm

man, just listen to that passion in his voice …

  29. Rolando Mota on December 31, 2021 at 8:41 pm

Just sold a dust collector – too big for my garage. This idea/project will meet my needs…Good video.

  30. Verde Denim on December 31, 2021 at 8:41 pm

curious to know if you’ve noticed a downside to this setup, since the shop-vac is a 2.5" (max) hose setup and you’re ‘drops’ are 4". I’ve read that the shop-vac really only works for smaller tools and the 4" is better for larger machinery, but that shop-vacs don’t work well for the larger port equipment.

  31. Chuck Rock on December 31, 2021 at 8:42 pm

I’ve seen that caliper circle tracing trick before but never use it. It’s so smart. DUH! Thanks for reminding me.

  32. Len Fabich on December 31, 2021 at 8:42 pm

I do this but put my vacume outside in a covered area. No noise in my shop. I put a hole through my wall. Works great.

  33. Vicki Rawlins on December 31, 2021 at 8:43 pm

Based upon how old some of the comments are I’m clearly very late in viewing this video but I’m so glad it popped up on my search for shop vac dust collection options! I just subscribed and am looking forward to watching more of your videos because I also love to make stuff!!!

  34. Jeff Wallace on December 31, 2021 at 8:46 pm

I have a problem with dust and all I have is a small table saw and a miter saw. I will try this. Thanks so much for this video that just might be what I need. Thanks again.

  35. Sébastien Fraggl on December 31, 2021 at 8:49 pm

1:29 you just need mr T and some Hoes… ok i’m out.

  36. Tom Brownrigg on December 31, 2021 at 8:51 pm

    As always, thank you Bob

  37. Caalm on December 31, 2021 at 8:51 pm

As a electrician i really cringed at the switch part.

  38. Rodney Jordan on December 31, 2021 at 8:51 pm

    Wonderful idea.

  39. holdmybeard on December 31, 2021 at 8:57 pm

This is really helpful. Winter hits hard here and I can’t always open the garage door to let out the sawdust.

  40. Brettr o on December 31, 2021 at 8:57 pm

So funny watching these older videos how much quieter Bob seems!

  41. npc on December 31, 2021 at 8:58 pm

dang you went to a whole new level with your new system..

  42. Craig Burghardt on December 31, 2021 at 8:58 pm

Pretty sure this did not work as intended. Longer hoses affect suction power, need more vacuums to boost it. Tell me I am wrong.

  43. Ns Ns on December 31, 2021 at 8:58 pm

You put shepherd’s hooks on backwards on the receptacle…

  44. Mar Betu on December 31, 2021 at 9:01 pm

    brilliant thanks

  45. Diogo Salazar on December 31, 2021 at 9:01 pm

Which vacuum are you using and how loud is it? Thanks

  46. Mike P on December 31, 2021 at 9:02 pm

How much HP does your vacuum have??

  47. Who Cares on December 31, 2021 at 9:03 pm

u didn’t really show how much stuff still ended up in the vac. i believe i saw some of it going that way.

  48. Tomas Gimenez on December 31, 2021 at 9:03 pm

Those 90 degree elbows don’t look to efficient

  49. Angel Leal on December 31, 2021 at 9:04 pm

Thanks for sharing, that’s an awesome video!
I need to make one but I haven’t made up my mind what size & brand of portable vacuum to purchase…. lol

Do you lose any suction power with all the stoppers? (Just curious)

    Thank you

  50. Gavin D on December 31, 2021 at 9:05 pm

Thanks for this its a great idea.

I used the plastic blast gates reccomended in this video. I find they clog too easy preventing the gates closing all the way even after a short amount of use . I have seen similar comments on Amazon. seemingly the metal ones are better but come at a higher price
Love the great videos and channel!
