How to Make the PERFECT Wooden GM Screen for Dungeons and Dragons
I recently started DM’ing a new Dungeons and Dragons campaign, so I decided to make life easier by designing and building the perfect DM Screen.
Hopefully this can give all you fellow Dungeon Masters out there some ideas for how to make your D&D campaigns run just a little bit smoother.

VERY NICE JOB! it seems like a good design, however IMO the ‘zigzag’ hinge design is a bit odd. IMO a DM screen should ‘circle’ around the DM when it sits on a table. concave angles, if you will. love the design tho.

Very cool looking! How has it held up?
I’m not a woodworker by any means, but have heard the "don’t glue pieces crossgrain unless you want a crack" enough times to always pay attention to it in others’ projects and be curious of how much leniency there actually is. Please note that I’m not calling you out, just lookin to learn where the limits are so as not to end up overthinking these kinds of projects.
The theory is, that once the wood on the main panel dries, it will want to shrink across the grain (widthwise). The one vertical framing strips is glued across the panels grain but the framing will not shrink along its grain (lengthwise), causing tension to build in the panel and potentially resulting in a crack to form next to the strip. I’d be surprised if the glue joint itself failed.
If one wanted to avoid this conundrum completely, the framing would have to be left floating at least on one end.
I would absolutely buy one of these if you started selling them! But I’m sure the magnet cutting isn’t worth it XD

What finish did you use on the maple to allow dry erase marker use?
Do you have any plans or rough dimensions for this? I’ve looked at a lot of screens (rather build one than buy one) and this seems to be the best one so far without getting too wild. I’ve never DMed before so I like the idea of being able to easily change things out on the fly, and the players have a place for things that they need to check regularly. I love the initiative tiles too. Helps with tabletop clutter when playing in a small space.
