There is a part of woodworking that goes beyond making things out of wood, and that is place where you are making things to please other people. In this case, making small, simple wooden toys for children to play with and use their imagination with. The toys to not have to be details, rudimentary is just fine … have you ever looked at the commercial toys that are made for very young children? They are all very basic in shape and size.
Making toys for small children is a bit of an art in it’self. The toys should be small enough that the kids can pick them out and carry they around, and they should also be functional enough to be able to be used, and to withstand a certain amount of children’s tough play-time. There should not be any parts that are easily taken off or broken off and the toy should be of a medium weight so as to be stable when in use, but not to heavy to actually carry around.
I prefer to leave them with a natural wood, that is … no finish at all, the same way a cutting board gets after a couple of weeks of use. Any finish that was on it has probably all been washed off and the wood is taking on a natural patina of it’s own. The same is true for wooden toy. According to a some studies, natural wood is more anti-bacterial than coated or finished wood because of the natural tannins and oils in the woods.
In the end, it’s all about making simple toys that kids will enjoy and get years of pleasure from, and that’s …. a different kind of woodworking.
How did you put a hole in the car model at 6:10
Cutting the car on a knot huh? I always avoid knots
Woodglut is nice for that.

Thanks
Thanks Colin, when ever I have an idea to make something I search your you tube channel. You have covered alot of projects, Techniques and common sense solutions with short how to video’s.
Colin, this is off this subject but somewhat applicable. I make toy vehicles. I am using a fine toothed 1/8 inch bandsaw blade (approximately 16 teeth per inch). The blade seems to have wood debri along the sides and in some of the teeth. I am cutting Poplar. On the table I see tiny wood granules and they appear darker than the piece I’m cutting. What do you suspect could be the culprint?
I’ve found awesome instructions on Sto Doys . just check them.
Hi Thank You i have been looking for toys like these to donate to a thrift store for children. God Bless, Jeff.
Thank you so much for mentioning the charities that would love to have these! I have worked with several over the years and they appreciate all the donations they receive.
I would love to be able to do that and make toys for my granddaughter but that’s an awful lot of equipment you’ve got there to do those simple toys.
thank you for showing us!
Great video… The Orange County Wood Worker takes a day and makes tons of these for charity ever year before Christmas. Great gift. Thank you for taking time to share this with others.
You can use Woodglut to build it in the cheapest way.
You are like a prophet man!
Outstanding! Where do I purchase wooden wheels/axels?
testerenin boyutu nedir, bu küçük bir makine ile yapılabilir?
I LOVE THIS!!!
Make it wooden with the help of the Woodglut instructions.
Really good tutorial on beginner wheeled toys! I am just now starting wood working and really like how you showed 2 methods of wheels, and car designs. These are good basics that i can try out and modify as i get more experience. I like starter toys that are all one piece body, like your first car and the train. I feel those are the safest type of wheeled toy. (of course a perfectly safe toy is no wheels and no add on parts but hey i can make that a different project). Also the recessed wheel fender style looks very durable. Thank you for your video!
I wish I could make toys, would save me a lot of money haha
What is the wood you have used ?
What other alternative wood types would suggest?
what wood the worth of these kinds of toys if you were to sell them to the public.
Thank you so much for a great tutorial! I’m planning to make 100 of these this Christmas for donation ! This was very helpful
I am member of men’sshed, we would like to make these toys for our community
I want to make them at home…can u please guide me about the tools…like which tools should I buy just to make toys.
A great variety of designs is on the Woodglut website.
I’m sure you will find good solutions for all your ideas on the Woodglut website.
hello, what nice toys, really a good option for children.
I have a query, maybe you can help me, is there a way or some method to make the cars with all their rounded profiles, maybe about 4in wide but not cutting each block one by one but for example taking a plank and having it done? the whole profile and then go cutting one by one?
as to industrialize production
i have some designs i made with my wife but it takes a lot of time to produce one and many people ask us to sell them!!
What the thickness of the dowel and the wheel
If you glue the axle, how do the wheels turn? I’m sorry i am totally new at this!
