Thank you, I’m new to turning/sharpening and this video is a perfect mix of comprehensive and concise. Much easier to understand the Wolverine jig now!

How do you find the 23 degrees angle on the vari-grind control arm?

Could you use the bevel side for pocket knives?

Great video!  I do have one question: what setting do you use on the vari-grind jig when sharpening spindle and bowl gouges?  Thanks!

What grit do you recommend for the wheel?

  11. Luiz Antonio on January 27, 2023 at 4:03 am

    Hello, good morning.
I wonder about this is that Emery made this one is thicker than the other which would be the name of this stone

Excellent video! It was simple, very informative and presented will. Thank you!

  13. Joseph Muzzy on January 27, 2023 at 4:03 am

And don’t buy a vari grind 2, utter garbage. There is no good instruction set or information for it. Even oneway only references the vari grind 1 in all of their info. More expensive for an inferior product that no one uses successfully

  14. Frank Kirschner on January 27, 2023 at 4:04 am

Very useful and informative. Will the sharpening jig work with any grinder, or is there something special that is required? Also, you didn’t mention the grit of the wheels. What grit wheel should I use.

    Thanks.

  17. Teo Pit on January 27, 2023 at 4:07 am

"you dont need to spend a lot of money to get great results…..We just used a wolvering grinding jig,a wolverine vari grind and a raptor setup" are you kidding me? If that is not a lot of money then what is your expensive mark? For a professional that does make money out of woodturning, thats nothing! but for a hobyist its a lot!

  18. David Carlile on January 27, 2023 at 4:12 am

Thanks for the video.  It was very useful.

  23. The_Joker on January 27, 2023 at 4:16 am

  25. will hull on January 27, 2023 at 4:24 am

Is an 8 inch wheel the best size for sharpening. Is it ok to use smaller wheels?

  26. John Meeks on January 27, 2023 at 4:26 am

You never mention where to set the jig that holds the cutting tool (what notch?).

  27. LUIS ALARCON on January 27, 2023 at 4:27 am

  28. Jay Sigel on January 27, 2023 at 4:27 am

I generally use a wet stone (oil or water) to sharpen my lathe knives and that works adequately. I’ve used the same oil stone for about 40 years. Looking at them recently, they’re flat, not round. I assume there’s a reason for that.

Using a grinding wheel to sharpen lathe knives makes no sense (unless you plan to use the side of the wheel). That would grind in a concave shape to the knives’ tips. Sure, you can get a very sharp edge, but you’ve lost some metal that you did not have to sacrifice in order to get that sharper edge and with it being thinner, they will get dull faster than the same sharp edge you could get by using a wet stone. Using a grinding wheel is way to aggressive and is a good way to quickly ruin a previously adequate knife. Using a belt-disc sander makes more sense and the exact angle can be set, if that’s really important, by using any cheap, digital angle finder. A razor-sharp edge is not necessary and it will stay that sharp for only seconds after using it. After all, you are shaving wood, not your face.

  29. J Starr on January 27, 2023 at 4:27 am

Won’t all the tool positions be the same length? When you push it against the bench and tighten it, if the length is 2 inches from the bench to the end it’ll be the same for everything

  31. Kerry Saunders on January 27, 2023 at 4:28 am
