If you want a real professional finish mix in equal 3 parts polyurethane, paint thinner and boiled linseed oil, one or two coats does amazing! And sanding in-between is much less and it’s such a smooth matt finish
You should learn how to be a craftsman, 2x4s are for building houses not furniture

Watet base finish is much better than polyurethane lacquer finish is best
