How To Use A Router | Ultimate Beginners Tutorial

How To Use A Router | Ultimate Beginners Tutorial

Woodworking lessons with master carpenter Jaime Perkins of the Perkins Builder Brothers. This video is all about how to use a router… It includes setting up the router bit and base, choosing and using the most common types of router bits, and also some common beginner mistakes to avoid! The router used in this video is a Porter-Cable brand, one of the most widely available and used models ever. If you are new to woodworking, this is a must-see video series!
***A few safety notes: Always use I and ear protection when using a router; never wear loose clothing when using a Router; always use two hands to control the router; always make sure the router is turned off before plugging it into a power source; always unplug the router when changing bits; and it’s always a good idea to let the router come to a complete stop before letting go of it.
For those of you wondering about using a router table… that will be another video.

Great video. I just purchased a router table to do some basic cuts thru some 2×2 pieces. This was very helpful for a novice worker, 👍

I just got a compact router and plan to get an elliptical jig for cutting ovals in 1/8 inch plywood etc. are the constricted routers easier to use ? I still have to get a few bits ( up cut , dados and fine point for some carving I want to try. ) I’m hoping pet won’t be too hard to teach myself. I have a small space to work in just on a Worx Pegasus table.

Great video! I’m in the process of learning the basics about routers so I can buy one and the info here was really helpful. The explanations about bit types was especially useful for me. Thanks!

Amazing. I’m making a router table and I need to learn how to do my first plunge cut so I can attach the diy fence. I’m making a giant betta fish breeding rack from acrylic and need all the edges of acrylic to be perfect and the same. Any suggestions for a bit I can use to cut acrylic with my router while it’s in the table?

I’m starting a project this weekend that’s going to require the use of a router. It’s my first time and I feel so much more confident after watching your video!

*I absolutely love this tool!!! The first one was defective and Dewalt replaced **MyBest.Tools** More bulky than the Bosch and Makita corded palm routers I have but worth it. Nice solid base*

  18. Janine Kurzinger on September 3, 2022 at 1:02 am

I’m just concerned about the weight of it. I just got the 2 1/4 hp dewalt router with fixed and plunge base so I can get the circle and elipse jig for it and do some carving . I have small hands and am quite green with power tools. Only recently learned to use a drill and have gotten used to my Dremel. Only used a router way back when I was in grade 7 when I made a clock in shop class. That was eons ago. Lol. I’m a bit nervous to use it fur the first time . I hope this video will help. Oh and I’ve gotten computable with a rotary sander. Too scared of jig saws to try those .

  23. Jason Charger on September 3, 2022 at 1:13 am

At 5:03…that’s where I have a problem. I have a long board that needs a cut (like an "L" profile) along the entirety of it. What can I use as a guide?

  24. Flip The Pickle on September 3, 2022 at 1:14 am

Hey Jamie what brand do you think make the best router bits?

  25. Paul Smyres on September 3, 2022 at 1:14 am

  26. Beth Link on September 3, 2022 at 1:14 am

  28. Richard Ivey on September 3, 2022 at 1:20 am

Do you have more router stuff? Very good video..

  29. Israel Antonio on September 3, 2022 at 1:21 am

The accident seemed to discourage people y you didn’t correct it…the hammer sign not a quality task too…for fuel in 🔥 place

  30. TorBoy9 on September 3, 2022 at 1:22 am

I’ve never dared to do the "climb cut", moving the router with the rotation of the bit. It looked unsafe and surprising in the video. Not good to do, but a good reminder.

Thanks for the share and the laugh ☺️

  32. The Rigglet on September 3, 2022 at 1:23 am

I always leave a little bit of my shaft showing when I’m inserting. Only after making sure it’s finger tight and checking my rim speed😏. Is it me or is this full of innuendo?

If I use my router as a planer in a sled, do I have to go only left to right?

  40. Sir Potato on September 3, 2022 at 1:36 am

Is there any downside to using a 1/4 shank bit in a bigger router, mine came with both 1/2 and 1/4 collet?

  41. Shari T on September 3, 2022 at 1:37 am

Many thanks…from a total router newbie!
