#woodworking #router #templates
You are awesome! Thanks for for the clearest explanation on this topic. I also am also so glad that I have reassurance I did not made a mistake in buying a jigsaw….need to start somewhere 😃
I like the flush-cut of your gib! A thoroughly informative video, thank you.
maybe to save time not trimming piece with pattern on and using bandsaw, use bandsaw for pattern sawing (template cutting). This technique is shown by Mark Duginske a forth generation wood worker. It’s ideal for not to complicated sawing. In a video "Mastering Your Bandsaw" around 23 minutes into video.
Tamar … Just getting to this video now; I just got a router and table and I want to start learning to use templates. This is a year old video but very timely for me. Those flush trim router bits look pretty ‘heavy duty’. If the template shape fills up most of the beginning board, could you go right to the router; not saw off the extra? Thanks … tom
Thank you very much for your tips and your info!
The first 2 minutes are an additional in video sponsorship advertisement. This lady is double dipping.
Use wider tape
Love the channel, tried to find a link to the double sided tape you use. Can’t find it. Will you please recommend a good double sided tape and also some black c a glue? Thank you so much
Holy mooooly! These special flush trim bits are expensive! $$$$ I think I’ll first try this with the ‘ordinary versions’. Then, when / should I end up doing this on a regular basis, I might consider justifying the expense.
Great video BTW!
Floating tenons-you don’t want loose tennons
Wow, I learned so much and everything you said make incredible sense. Thanks.
Very helpful information, fantastic production quality. Quick question re blue tape and ca glue: if you lay the first layer of blue tape sticky side down on your piece, then put ca glue, then the second layer of blue tape sticky side up, then place your template you should be able to line up the blue tapes pretty well, right? Not that it is better than double sided tape imo, just another option.
Thank you soooo much for the way you explain things, breaking them down with illustrations and not assuming that we know all the different terminologies. You are an excellent teacher. I am a guy and could listen to you all day. I was wondering if I should buy bushings but didn’t know what they were for. You not only gave an informative answer, but you gave other options and explained what a pattern bit was. I don’t like searching through 20 YouTube videos to understand 1 thing. I will watch your videos first from now on. Actually, I am going to go and watch all of your videos now… binge-watching time! Keep up the good work!
Amazing info here. I’m totally new to routers as my first one has just arrived and I’m yet to put it to use. Thanks a lot.
Just a tip with the CA glue and tape method. You don’t have to put a piece of tape on both pieces of wood, just one piece, e.g. your template. Then you put CA on the first strip of tape, and place your second strip upside down across the first, and then put your template on your work piece. Personally I prefer using this method as I never get any residue from the tape and I’ve never been able to find double sided tape that doesn’t leave something behind – if I could I’d definitely use double-sided!
for me personally i dont have a sender or something like that i just 3d print it and cut the rest with a saw
Advertising too long before getting started
Great video!! Thanks
For the CA trick, just make sure your CA glue isn’t to the edge of your blue tape. As long as there is enough overlap of tape, then it’s never an issue.
Templates are great, I use them all the time, I have hundreds hanging in my shop from radius guides to cutouts of spacers for kitchen units. The time the take to make is well worth the time they same with repeating tasks. Great video.
Use thicker blue tape.
I like making "disposable" templates out of cheap MDF, but if I need something to last, like a guitar body template, I prefer 3/8" Plywood as a Master template.
Thank you for yrs teaching 😃😃
Most ignored tip is: the way you have pencil always available – in your hair – a great and simple idea!
You are brilliant!
The shape of the first template. Very funny.
Sorry I turned my apple off then back on I had bad connection.
What if any are the advantages of a Flush Trim Bit with the Bottom Bearing or top bearing only vs just getting the Ultimate Flush Trim Bit with BOTH Bearings? If I get the bit with both top and bottom aren’t I ready for eith kind of flush trimming vs having specialized bits- one for top flush trimming and one for bottom?
How did you learn woodworking.

young lady you sure tickled my funnybone i know when you hit your finger the dance was great i still laugh just thinking about i know it was painfull ben in that predickiment before
One thing about routers, they don’t have cell phones. Stay with me. Unlike teenage kids, you can’t take their phone away when they refuse to work with you. Best disciplinary method ever.
Question: what causes the wavy edge on your cut? Is that just a cheap or dull bit?
How did you make your P-90 template? The pre-made ones on the web are high dollar.
Are you married??? 😉🌹
Darlin … You are one beautiful lady !!!
Great job!thanks for sharing!
great vid
where do you buy the trim bit router bits…….the ones i can see from whiteside are insanely expensive?
Thank you for editing out the saw noises. Quality video.
Thank you so much for this great video!
Thank u for ALL The good tip super Boom kep IT rollin
Great content. I am lusting for your bandsaw. You call it "this guy". If I had one, It would be "my baby". Is it the PWBS-14CS or a bigger one?
How/ where do you store your templates???
30USD + shipping for 33 meters, what? One USD for a meter of tape. Hopelessly overpriced, I’d rather stick to carpet tape.
Use wider painters tape dork
Most of your woodcraft links no longer work
Also not mentioned here – A template is wayyyy easier to replace than an expensive piece of hardwood. I like making templates to get the shape just right with no stress. If the shape is wrong I can just throw out the template and start over!
If YOU were my teacher, I would have got distinctions in ALL my subjects!!! (you missed your occupation, you have the ability to make things crystal clear for everyone)!!! Thanks for a FANTASTIC VIDEO!!! The way you explains things makes it so clear and simple!!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!!! 👍👍👍 🌹
Love the video, great content! Would like to see something on making the templates themselves. Always looking for tips and tricks there. Specifically it would be helpful to see templates made with interior cutouts rather than exterior. Thanks again!
