How To Make A Blast Gates For A Dust Collection System

In this video I will show you how a very simple homemade device could efficiently collect all dust from various workshop power tools by using only one shop vac.

I made a dust splitter for 5 tools, but it could be made with your preferred number of ports and sizes. This is a general idea of how the very simple device could be made depending on each workshop’s needs. And yes, this is one of those builds that I’m questioning myself – “why I didn’t build it years ago”.

Truly a useful build. I’m definitely going to make some of these. Thank you for sharing this.

Thanks, I am going to make one, love the idea, one thing that I have not figured out how to do is to turn on my dust collector from multiple machines, is there a device that helps with this?

Great idea. This will solve my problems in a very nice way. Sorry, but I will be stealing your design. Thank you for showing everyone this clever design.

Wwoow! Das beste Blastgate, dass ich bisher gesehen habe. Die Idee mit den Magneten ist genial.

  9. greg vaneeckhout on July 31, 2022 at 11:22 pm

Very nice simple idea, I will be able to make some small changes but it will work great and saves me buying a bunch of blast gates and is much simpler.- thanks

This is a very elegant solution to the tool switching problem. Nice.

what filter do you have on the vaccum cleaner? the cyclone takes the big dust but the fine dust under 5 microns goes to the vaccuum cleaner. Is the filter catching less than 5 microns? if not, it is pumping deadly fine dust back into the shop and making the whole thing pointless.

Nice solution! if you had covered the insert with adhesive tape you would not have been bothered by the glue

Hey man, what is the power of your vacuum cleaner? Mine has only 4.5Hp. I think it is no strong enough.

Thank you for this! I just made one and it works awesome!

  29. amosevie on July 31, 2022 at 11:48 pm

This is a great idea and easy to build. I had an extensive dust collection system before we moved, and now I don’t have room in my one car garage for a big unit. This will definitely fit in my small shop with a couple of vacs and separators.

  30. Hat Bpto on July 31, 2022 at 11:51 pm

Great idea with the magnets. You sir, are a mad scientist!

  31. JASON'S DESIGN SHOP on July 31, 2022 at 11:51 pm

Well, you beat me to this idea fellow YouTuber! I thought about it for three days and came up with this idea to avoid buying the expensive gates then searched YouTube to see if this idea was out there. And there you are. I think two others as well. Your best contribution to the concept is the magnets! Love it. This is my next shop project. Thanks for proving the concept for me 😎

  32. Larson Bennett on July 31, 2022 at 11:51 pm

Do the magnets touch or do they come very close to touching? I plan on making this project and would like to know. Thank you for a genius project.

  33. Daniel Mozis on July 31, 2022 at 11:52 pm

Great great dispatch, exactly how i’d like to have one. I begun searching for the black adapters you speak about that you screen at the end of each hose but couldn’t find any. Can I ask where you got them or what they are callled so I can search more efficiently?

    Thanks for great job 👏

Very nice! Thanks for sharing. I’ll make one for my shop.

  39. Michele Albertini on July 31, 2022 at 11:58 pm

congratulations for the job! is it possible to have the adapter stl printed in 3d? thank you

  40. Chris on July 31, 2022 at 11:59 pm

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed. This beats using blast gates because the flow restriction should be less.

  41. Larson Bennett on July 31, 2022 at 11:59 pm

Very nice work. Does this system seal tightly so there is no loss of suction on each tool?

  42. Just a user on August 1, 2022 at 12:00 am

Where can I find the black hose adapter?

  43. elvis de paula on August 1, 2022 at 12:00 am

Muito bom show de bola 👏

  44. Ricardo Lacerda on August 1, 2022 at 12:01 am

Incredibly creative and simple. Thanks a lot.

  45. meejiang on August 1, 2022 at 12:01 am

Did you achieve air-tightness just by sliding that piece of wood over a PVC pipe opening? In my mind that would severely reduce the suction power.

  46. Ben Jenkins on August 1, 2022 at 12:02 am

I love this. I was trying to think about a solution for using my Festool Midi and didn’t want to have to buy a bunch of custom hoses. This seems like the perfect solution. Thanks for sharing.

  50. Scott F on August 1, 2022 at 12:05 am

Isn’t there an air gap between the slider piece and the selected hose? Their just touching but not airtight. Do you notice a reduction of suction as a result?
