What is the maximum drill rotation speed for using a step drill bit?
    Thanks.

you almost had me at the start holding the metal, I was about to scream at the screen.

Well done! I had to laugh though: I was was watching with my wife and at the beginning I said out loud “Oh no! You need to clamp down that sheet of tin!!!” Lol

I’ve had good luck with Lenox brand step bits. Still have 3 different sizes of Uni-Bit before irwin bought them out years ago.

  11. Mark on March 13, 2023 at 6:58 am

1:10 I still wouldnt try that. Ive had too many instances where drills start causing clamped down material to come loose

  12. Dave Haynes on March 13, 2023 at 7:02 am

Having never used one of these I found this an excellent tutorial…….and I really thought you were going to hold that metal at the start!

Sprue, haven’t heard anybody say that in awhile. Casting/mold terminology.

There are non graduated unibits so you can finesse whatever size hole you need

im about to order some step bits. But they’re incremented 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. will one of those do for an m5? The ‘6’ possibly?

Will these work with a cordless drill, or do you need a drill press?

  29. Alan McRae on March 13, 2023 at 7:21 am

I just started using some Step Bits to drill component mounting holes into a plastic electronics project box. Came here to get some tips before I try drilling into the sides of the plastic enclosure box. I need to get my techniques perfected as I plan to build more Arduino & Raspberry Pi projects in the future and I’ll need to enclose them for everyday, heavy duty use.

  33. Fiona Thompson on March 13, 2023 at 7:31 am

Great video. Very helpful! I need to drill 1/4" holes into 20 gauge sheet copper. This seems to be the solution. What I read is that the speed of the drill press matters. I don’t believe you mentioned your speed. What do you recommend for 20 gauge copper? Or is that not really a factor? Also, do you recommend any oil or lubricant of any kind with 20 gauge copper? Thank you again.

If I need a hole between 2 steps ….can I just stop the drilling early?

  35. ecmjr on March 13, 2023 at 7:33 am

    Geez… I’ve been drilling incorrectly!!!

  37. Pavel Hořejší on March 13, 2023 at 7:34 am

    Good tutorial.
    Thanks for that.
Just curious why don’t you use a protective gloves and goggles?

  38. Richard Theisen on March 13, 2023 at 7:35 am

Yep, had me at the start. I thought he was going for it. Figured there would be blood

  39. Bob Wolf on March 13, 2023 at 7:37 am

Thanks for this video! Now I know what a step drill bit is and how to use it.

  40. Armus Skinofevil on March 13, 2023 at 7:40 am

If you are going to clamp it then you could use a regular bit. You argued to use it because it would spin if not clamped – then you clamped it

  41. Jonathan Sterling on March 13, 2023 at 7:41 am

Yes, I was waiting with baited breath for him to drill that thin piece of metal. It is YouTube, you know. And then he says no of course he won’t do that…lol. Great joke.

  42. Richard Theisen on March 13, 2023 at 7:42 am

I’d like to see that clamp

  43. Baron Longnose on March 13, 2023 at 7:44 am

Can you use these step drills by hand

  44. Joe Rosales on March 13, 2023 at 7:44 am

    Awesome thanks.

  45. Greg Fox on March 13, 2023 at 7:45 am

with the plastic, you are obviously limited to the size based on the thickness, unless you use a smaller bit. Acrylic can be drilled with conventional bits, but work best with a different angle (not 60, maybe 90, or by grinding the tip a bit)

  46. StephenJP on March 13, 2023 at 7:45 am

I had to sign in and say Great Job on this Video. Very clear and understandable.

  47. Mohamed Bekkai on March 13, 2023 at 7:45 am

Can I use them on basin to extend the hole

  48. Nossa Invenção de Cada Dia on March 13, 2023 at 7:46 am

for you who have the habit of drilling MDF or who need perfection in the holes, whether with a chain saw or other holes, always make a sandwich with the piece and then make the hole.

  49. William Rogstad on March 13, 2023 at 7:48 am

I was wondering about these step drill bits. Thanks!
