i think should cut one side first than put the hinge, than cut the other side , it will be more perfect , am i right sir.
Agh! My tinnitus! If your video editing software has some audio tools, look for high pitch spikes and get them out! (Otherwise, great videos, Colin β love your stuff!)
Thanks ! Excellent video.
Hit a nail on the lid cut off
Why not use a router table
Blade gullets should be above the piece being cut, otherwise the sawdust isnβt thrown out properly during the cut. The rule of thumb is to have three gullets just above the piece.
Guess I have to have a table saw to make a simple box.
can a palm router make that kind o dado? thanksππ΅π
Lauan or utility panel has been used in the theatre for the last 40 years–or as long as I can remember to make flats (walls). We use 1/8" or 1/4" sheets on top of a frame constructed out of 1X3s. We call this a TV or Hollywood flat.
How would you do the edges/ dados of the sides if you donβt have a table saw? Would it be just by using a chisel? Or is there a better manual way ? Thanks a lot
Nicely done, sir! I think that I’ll make one myself. Thank you very much for the clear instructions!
i am sorry but most people looking for this videos don’t have industrial level cutting machines.
Where’s the info on the first dado cut you made, shown at 6:12 in?
10:02 Nice…
I like that one. Nicer box than my usual shop box. π
Wow! Amazing

Five years on…your tips still work…I made exactly the same for my tools…thanks so much Colin…
I just made 3 boxes before I seen this, I made the box and lid separately, it was a ton work try to match them up perfectly, I’m going to try this next time, it seems way more simple and makes more sense, awesome idea
Very fine sir thanks
Hi, did i miss where he explained how to make the cut (the straight) line in each board before he removed the material leaving a dado cut?
Ok so I’ve been trying to find where you say what lengths you measure the bottom and top/lid
I love the simplicity of that box Colin ππ.
Colin, you never specify what the dado cuts were setβ1/2β wide, 1/4β deep?
Nice, thanks Colin!
Can you do this in any size?
Good idea video
thank you …. u make it look so easy !!!!!
Yes, I am seven years late, but boy, this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you! Subscribed.
This very method will be the one I use with my son to introduce him to woodworking! It’s simple and uses a bunch of great techniques that are used in so many other projects! 6yr old video and still relevant!
Great video…simple but very necessary basic skills. You cannot imagine the trouble I had making a very simple wood box for my daughter today. Nothing was square.
Big and main difficulty??? Making straight cuts with a jigsaw…
10:01 Nail vs saw blade.
Derp.
I’m gonna build a simple wooden box from scrap wood I found at a construction site. First thing you’ll need is $5000 worth of tools. I still watched and like the video….
That lid idea is genius!!!
Keep doing what youβre doing great video
Oh god we are making this in school but bigger to store our tools in π
So hopefully you see this even though it’s been 7 years. I’m doing a box according to these instructions. Thing is when I get to what you do at the 6:50ish mark, I either get three sides to cut fine and the fourth requires me to break off chips and sand it, or two of the sides, usually the shorter ones because my piece of wood dips into the gap of my saw (even though I have the plate over it). Any suggestions?
thank you for this video sir.. you inspired me….i made my own version of jewelry box, i put some accessories on it… thank you.
You tube cam I have my volume back please?
Kind of discouraging to be enthusiastic when one must have a big table saw and cut datos
perhaps you could explain " still be using our bar " What bar?
Woodglut is full of amazing tips. It helped me a lot.
Excellent video. Was simply looking for an easily made, but purposeful box. Had to scroll through quite a few videos to find one that was useful without watching a ‘carpenter’ build a box using all kinds of tools and equipment that I don’t have. This, I could do. Well done, sir!
Are you able to make a box air tight I wanted to make a hand made Tabbaco box thanks
Thanks for the simple box. Note that your outside measurements after completed job is 6.5 inches high = to 6β plus 1/4β for top 1/4β for bottom.
I was working to exact outside dimensions. I cut the sides to 5.5β (6β board cut less thickness of board) plus extra length for cutting 2 ends. the ends would be 5.5β by 5.5β.
Thank you for drawing those black lines showing where the dadoes will be. I’m a beginner and appreciate your video very much.
