I’d never have thought about changing the blade to a smaller diameter one!

  2. Fedor Butochnikow on March 24, 2022 at 6:03 pm

i’m surprised the insert is not screwed to the body of the tool. what if a splinter gets between the blade and the slot while spinning and the whole thing lifts?

  3. brewermoe on March 24, 2022 at 6:04 pm

    Can you use MDF?

Very well done video on how to make a zero clearance insert bevel insert. Lots of tricks that turn out a quality product.

Have you ever suffered a kickback, I’m here to tell you it was almost fatal!

Outstanding! You cover every detail clearly and efficiently without any BS. Much appreciated.

Tape wrapped around to build it up was my first thought. Another would be to make a master out of MDF or a couple of pieces of 1/4" masonite laminated together for thickness. You could use the tape method or his method to make your master. You would then use this master as your template to make all future inserts from. Since mdf and Masonite are very dimensionally stable the master should retain it’s dimensions much better than plywood or solid wood. Give it a thin coat of poly for additional moisture protection. UMHW would probably be the best material but most people have some scrap mdf laying around. I would also drill and countersink screw holes where your leveler screws are going to go to attach the blank to the master. This will be easier to separate than carpet tape and you will already have your holes for your leveler screws when you are done. I would also use plywood to make my inserts. Solid wood is too dimensionally unstable.

    Thanks!

  10. Dwight Carlson on March 24, 2022 at 6:09 pm

May I ask what species of wood you are using?

  11. Carl Kellogg on March 24, 2022 at 6:09 pm

Use hot glue in place of screws its much faster.

  12. Surfinturfer on March 24, 2022 at 6:11 pm

    Still a brilliant video!

My feeling is a pencil trace from underneath would be much less headache and guess.

  15. Daniel Mendes on March 24, 2022 at 6:13 pm

Hello!!! Let me ask you, and the riving knife? I have a DeWalt dw745 and it’s me first table saw. I’m iniciating my wood works and I’m trying to learn by whatching vídeos like yours, and there are a lot of people that show the imortance of it. I know that it depends a lot of the “kind” of wood using, nut I would like to know your opinion. And others too. Thanks.

  16. Hassan Al-Mosawi on March 24, 2022 at 6:14 pm

Thanks for sharing that, I did the same but is fails, how many attempts you have? my saw table is very small, same at Canadian Tire!

I have a new Ryobi table saw so make me a couple of zero clearance. Thank you send me a bill Matthias appreciate it

  22. Russell Motter on March 24, 2022 at 6:20 pm

Some overthinking, but good video & tips on leveling the plate w screws on the underside 👍

  23. Bill Underwood on March 24, 2022 at 6:21 pm

Question: my Black & Decker insert has some sort of spring clip on the far side, and a phillips screw holding down the near side. If I make an insert to replace this, can I safely make one that just rests in place instead of needing a screwdriver every time I want to take the plate out?

  24. Dale Fill on March 24, 2022 at 6:21 pm

WOW!! Talk about the hard way of doing something simple!!

  25. Ronald Rocheleau on March 24, 2022 at 6:22 pm

Awesome Video Matthias thanks I have to make some for mine and this video certainly helped!

  26. Tommy Brav on March 24, 2022 at 6:23 pm

Is there a building plan for the jig you are using about 3+ minutes into the video?

  27. IronCobra94 on March 24, 2022 at 6:23 pm

so you don’t want to make the insert out of plywood because it’s not strong enough to resist sagging but you basically MAKE a plywood end because it’s strong enough to keep the end of the board from splitting? that makes no sense

  28. TheTrock121 on March 24, 2022 at 6:29 pm

That’s some nice work. I haven’t replaced my fence to get those sort of tolerances, but I used a piece of hack saw blade as a spring to hold the insert fast, similar to the spring in my original insert.

Great, thorough, video with a lot of good ideas. Thanks.

  31. Jonathan Simmonds on March 24, 2022 at 6:33 pm

Err, ply is more stable than natural timber, much better to make them out of ply surely?

  32. Maung Moe on March 24, 2022 at 6:37 pm

Can plywood be used for this kind of insert?

  33. Paul Almquist on March 24, 2022 at 6:43 pm

How do you PREdrill a hole vs just drilling a hole? Do you use a predrill? I have only learned to drill holes. Please show how to predrill a hole as it must be different from drilling holes since the words are different.

  34. Alejandro JAUREGUIBERRY on March 24, 2022 at 6:44 pm

where can I see how to build the machine in minute 3:00 . Sorry my bad english

  35. Ben Brown on March 24, 2022 at 6:47 pm

The amount of thought and detail you’ve put into each of these projects is nothing short of exceptional, thank you! I am one who will build just about anything rather than buy it if I can figure out how it goes together, and your plans make that almost easy!!! I’ll be purchasing a few of your plan sets for sure!!!

  36. Charles on March 24, 2022 at 6:47 pm

8:47 ". . . I pre-drilled a hole . . . " How does one do that? "Pre-drill" Aren’t you actually drilling a (pilot) hole to reduce the chance the material will deform or split when the nail (or screw) is driven home?

  37. Mark Evans on March 24, 2022 at 6:50 pm

Excelent video. Can you tell me where I can get plans for that jig?

  38. Danny Jackson on March 24, 2022 at 6:50 pm

    Praise the Lord.

  39. Karén Karapetyan on March 24, 2022 at 6:55 pm

    what about the riving knife?

  40. Jerry Kelley on March 24, 2022 at 6:56 pm

    Nice job

  41. Douglas Michel on March 24, 2022 at 6:57 pm

Threaded set screws for height adjustment with wood threads are available, drill am tap. For the nose of the plate to keep from tilting, I epoxy a flat washer to the under side of the from radius.

  42. Dwight Carlson on March 24, 2022 at 6:58 pm

Did you mention what kind of wood you used for the insert?

  43. Ej Lilley on March 24, 2022 at 6:58 pm

Thank you Matthias, another fine video with clear explanations.

  44. coronaking812 on March 24, 2022 at 6:58 pm

Zero clearance? That can’t be accurate!
If you see smoke below you my friend Have achieved zero clearance!

  45. F D on March 24, 2022 at 6:58 pm

Why not add a riving knife? Seems unsafe no?

  46. John Manfra on March 24, 2022 at 6:59 pm

This is 9 years old.. can someone make a popular 2022 video on this lmao

  47. Paul Francoeur on March 24, 2022 at 6:59 pm

    Hello Matthias,
This is a great video. Thanks.
What is the kind of jig you are using @ 3:00? Looks like something to make spline joints. Also, would you be kind enough to share the brand or kind of varnish you use?
    Sincerely,

    Paul

  48. ZLD Smogless on March 24, 2022 at 7:00 pm

You should make an insert with a riving knife/splitter in case Paul gets kickback

  49. Steve Pratt on March 24, 2022 at 7:02 pm

Great video! Loved the idea of putting your insert on TOP of the factory one when the blade is too big…that totally makes sense. Question: does the varnish work well for keeping the wood from expanding / contracting with the different seasons? I was going to try and use paste wax since it’s hydrophobic and also matches the wax on the table saw. Thoughts?

  50. 0000 0000 on March 24, 2022 at 7:02 pm

Why not just use plywood. Baltic birch plywood. No need to splice the ends.
