Medieval carpentry – building without nails. French Timber Framing & Scribing
This is an instructional documentary about the traditional french timber framing. Carpentry class held in Estonia and organised by Vanaajamaja (vanaajamaja.ee/en) – focusing on the thousands of years old scribing technique using plumb bob. The main key before scribing irregular (hewn or twisted) timbers is to mark the vertical and horizontal centers by level on the both end of the log and snap the lines – as all the scribing is done using the center lines (axis) instead of the square rule when the sides of the timbers are being used as reference. This technique can be used also on planed or sawn timbers. All the frame was build in 5 days by the experienced carpenters and non experienced students using only hand tools. Hands not machines!

Sorry I can’t really understand when he was telling or teaching at 13:49…can anyone give a little help here? Much appreciated!
says that the medieval people used axes to make beams but lumber mills are from the medieval period. Lumber mills had water wheels and saws but medieval people wasted huge amounts of wood on trimming the wood.
No safety glasses.
Smart guy

This guy is just exudes natural, traditional masculinity.
He’s not grotesquely muscular, macho, or arrogant. Rather, he’s capable and knowledgeable.
Ah
So that’s how Minecraft Steve does it
I found great plans on the Woodprix website. I think this is a good solution for everyone.
Maybe it’s better to machine
"The gang learns timberframing"

Excellent hand and eye ordination. Very skillfully.

Pure concept building. Understanding what your doing on an entirely different level. Literally master crafted. It does not need to be precise to far outclass something that is. This is Amazing sir.
SO MUCH TO LEARN, HOW WONDERFUL
This is an instructional documentary about the traditional french timber framing , well it isn’t according to wiki :"Japanese carpentry was developed more than a millennium ago and uses distinctive woodworking joints. It involves building wooden furniture without the use of nails, screws, glue or electric tools." Many of the techniques and joinery you use are much older that described.
I use Woodglut plans for all my joinery. Google and try it out.
can you imagine what medieval carpenters would have given to have a band saw mill?
진짜 잘만드네요 잘 보고 갑니다.
Exactly the same system as used traditionally in Britain.
Quelle surprise!
These tools were also used for surgery at that time..
Beautiful work.
Where can you get an axe axe like that
Find out how to do it yourself with all the details. Just look for Woodglut 🙂
would luv to take this class
Bravo Mourad tu es un chef . Michel
Superbe boulot !
Would they use hand planes on timber to smooth out the sides?
I would like to buy 1 house please
Just google Woodprix and make some dust.
For everyone worried about the safety of his feet, just keep in mind that the Japanese carpenters would hew barefoot!
