Nice use of combining filtration and shop tool. Just curious where do you park cars?
Now I know what to do with that extra blower motor. Thanks
Nice build! I’m gathering info to build this kind of device. I’m worried that the air being blown from the box will generate turbulence and make dust fly around even more… How is your experience up to now on this?
So its been a while, is there an updated video? How is it working?
How about an update?
Smart design!! 👍Very clean, economical and efficient. Thanks for sharing.
I like how you used a square to keep your jigsaw straight.
Nice thing you’re doing there. Good for your health too. But watch out. Wood that you can use is not scrap. It’s just expensive material you don’t just throw it away.
I’m going to build one of these! I have a small shop that needs more filtration and another flat area to put my new benchtop planer! Great idea Subbed!
Simple and proper design.
Thanks, now all I need is a blower motor !
If I can’t find a blower, would one of those air movers (like mold removal teams use) work for this? Having a hard time finding a fan for less than retail…
What’s the gap between the inside sides and the fan / casing ? Is this "restriction" or it does not affect the fans since you have filters that offer wind / air "resistance"
OH FFS GET TO THE POINT
Your need to change your draw pulls to spoked Bs. You’ll find they will improve the look and atmosphere in the shop. You’ll be much happier. Go B’s!
Very clever and useful. Nice build.
@jaybates how has this design preformed over the past few years? Are you still using it? Is it effective? Would you make any changes? I have an old rigid cieling mount that doesn’t work that well and filters are discontinued and its begging to be replaced.
Super helpful. I found this through a comment on Izzy Swan’s video on box fan vs air filtration. This gives me a great idea on how to turn dead space from a shop cart into usable air filtration and shop cart.
Yo you need to patent that man that is so neat thanks for sharing. I want to make me a air purifier out of a box fan and some filters like you did thanks again keep on creating….
You did well to design around a blower that can be regulated down from its maximum capacity. For a larger shop I built 2 units using attic vent fans. They’re unbearably noisy but, boy, do they filter some air in a hurry. They were hung from the ceiling when I had a mezzanine for access but now I’d like to use them as roll-arounds. Overkill. Be advised, fellow woodworkers.
Since you bought 6 filters from Amazon, 4 filters is over kill and you have 2 extra filters. You could eliminate the front filter and make that a solid plywood piece that way you have 3 extra filters for next filter change.
5:50 that is a cool effect with you commenting on yourself doing the work.
you do not need Merv 13, filter will be loaded up too quick. Merv 7or 8 plated filter is good enough. Shop is not hospital. Thank you for the design!
This is the 2nd video I’ve seen for air filtration with dewalt planer on top. Neither one has chip collection, what’s up with that?
Beautiful, great idea, think I’ll build me one!
Love the effect at 6:00. Nicely done! You’re lucky to be able to have a shop assistant that’s (hopefully) always on the same page 😁
Nice camera trick. The first video I’ve seen do it.
Jay, do you happen to know the CFM rating on the unit your unit?
Currently I only have a 1 box fan with a Filter. However in the future I will build a cart version.
Got a free blower motor from my furnace installer and am ready to go! Thanks for this video, Jay!
Nice design. I just scavenged one of 3 blowers that I have available and I love this design. My intent is to be able to run some ductwork from it so I can exhaust the air out the garage window. Do you have any thoughts on how to avoid sucking all the cold air in from outside and exhausting all my "warm" air from inside the shop? I live in New England and with winter coming I’d love to be able to run this in the winter. My shop is uninsulated and unheated, so I’m not losing $ but will be losing some of the benefit of having the garage door closed.
💪👌👏
I now have a plan for my own filter system, thanks to you for explaining the details.
Mobile air filtration – while a cool idea – drawing all the shop air to where you are is counter-intuitive. You’re pulling all the dust near to where you’re working. Mine is planned for being on the wall nearby the shop dust collector system. Any leaks are drawn away from me and clean(er) air comes my way.
Now that you’ve had this for a couple of years, I’m wondering what your feelings are about it. Are you happy with it? What would you change about it? How do you feel about just one speed? Does it do the job you expected it to do, or was it a waste of time? The reason I ask is that I just replaced the HVAC in my house and so I now have a (4-speed) blower sitting unused, in my garage. I’m planning to make one of these (thank you for the inspiration), but wanted to touch base with you about it first. Thanks!
lemme guess: you live in Cincinnati??
Great video!! Any idea as to the CFMs of the fan when wired for the low speed?
Great idea. I’m going to build one
Just got one of these … (larger) with an external, top-mount / belt-driven version …
I tested it, in open-air, and after 5 minutes or so, it stopped. I was sure i burnt the motor, BUT, after reading the data, it says "thermally protected" soooooooo my thought was that wen it reaches a certain temperature, it switches off (logic)
10 minutes later, i heard a small "click" in the motor …. so i decided to re-plug it and start it again … as expected, it ran ok, but i stopped it manually.
Question : If i build an enclosure (box) for mine with reduced intake area, will that PREVENT it from stopping randomly, as i would believe, the motor would be working less hard with more restriction applied to the wheel inside ?
Sorry for the long "question".
That’s awesome, great design!
Looking to build this. I like the design.
Question: does anyone think sitting the fan on it’s side, so the intake faces up, would hurt the fan. I would support the case of the fan so the motor didn’t sit directly on the base. Thoughts?
Great build.
Been thinking about a better fan than a 20" box fan. Thinking I can find a used furnace fan easily and build one of these beauties! Thank you!
Built something similar, ThANK YOU for inspiring!!!
This is super cool! My only concern is something poking right through the filter. I would have to put some type of guard over the filter to keep me from sending a piece of lumber right into the motor!
all dust is cathcjed in filters, good idea
Hi, The DIY box air filter is fine with me. Could you help me get 1 unit and a few extra filters to fight dusts and other allergens? I am gonna pay for the costs and shipping. Can’t shop online at the moment. Thanks for your help
If you find the motor is getting overly hot, INCREASE restriction. These need a certain amount of static pressure to work efficiently. Nice work.
Your video was exactly what I needed. I was overthinking how I was going to make my air cleaner. Thanks for a well done article.
what size did you cut from 2×4 leg ? is 1"x"1 ????
