I brush on that varithain water based poly and it smooths out as it dries like no other poly I have ever used.
I think shellac is the way to go. We can’t use a sprayer.
Just bought a chess set pieces, what is a better way to lacquer the chess pieces? apply using a brush or using a spray can? I was thinking I can get away with the brush it may not show the imperfection much due to the curvatures of the pieces, what do you think?
What do you use for spalted oak and maple to harden it? I have a couple of tons of it.
Hi Jonathan,
I’m making big bass marimba bars (percussion instrument that will be struck thousands of times with a medium hard mallet and will vibrate like crazy over and over and over). Traditionally they finished with oils and waxs, though I want to experiment with other stuff. For my experiment phase—in order of best to worst—can you please suggest/brainstorm what you think might work out for coating/sealing wooden bars that will be taking a lot of inherent abuse? With all the beating and vibrating, for instance, might shellac or lacquer or polyurethane or wood hardener or an acrylic poor be too brittle, resulting in getting rattled and crushed to death and breaking apart microscopically over time? Also consider which finish would be the most scratch resistant. (Bars will be stored in stacks and slid against each other with the potential of dirt and sand bits in between. Thanks for brainstorming with me 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing this, JKM, I use shellac on all my stuff now. Also bought one of your stop blocks and use it with the sled Tamar designed. Kudos for all the work you put into your videos! Someday I’ll work up the patience to try my hand at dovetails…
To protect a new wood dining table, would you use shellac or beeswax for long term water protection?
Jonathan…. Gloss and Semi Gloss do have their places. To see subtle grain details that can really pop out and beautify the piece you need to increase light amplification. Like birds eye grain not normally seen. Increasing light amplification is done by increasing the gloss. Subtle details will pop unbelievably!
Another interesting factoid about shellac; it’s what is used to coat enteric coated pills, and even some candies.
4:03 4 to 1 Wax to oil? I thought it was the other way around?
When I do do gloss……… LOL
This was very useful! I have been using only lacquer and epoxy, with rare poly finish. I am going to try shellac.
shellac, is the resinous exudate produced by the female Indian "lac" bug, an insect that spends its whole life attached to a tree, sucking its sap and converting it into the familiar sticky substance that has long been used to provide a glossy protective coating on wood.
This video is amazing. Thank you for the best info
When the face is off camera this dude sounds like guy fieri lmao
How do you dilute your 1:1 shellac solution? I roughly have 16 oz of shellac and 16 oz of denatured alcohol in a 32 oz jar. I just don’t know how much to dilute.
The bug is a Lac beetle
For cutting boards, and all the bowls I have made over the last 25 years, I have come to prefer a walnut oil finish, specifically from The Doctor’s Woodshop. The biggest difference with the walnut oil, when compared to mineral oil is that the walnut oil will cure and harden. Mineral oil never hardens or builds up any type of permanent finish. This particular one also has ‘micro aggregated’ carnuba wax in it. Generally carnuba wax needs a solvent (turpentine in Kiwi neutral shoe polish) or heat to flow and spread evenly. This stuff doesn’t. It does take a week or so to totally cure. With bees wax, you can usually see finger prints. Also, with your finish, and the Doctor’s stuff, use a heat gun for the final coat or three.
Think it’s the shell of a lac bug. Shellac shell lac bug 😌
I have a "BoosBlock" butcher block that I bought years ago that came with what they called Boosbutter that was exactly like your beeswax mixture and was absolutely amazing. That sort or coating really does go a long way on those wood blocks.
was the wood cherry?
Katz-Moses goo… Four to one as in four parts wax and one part mineral oil can be by volume or by weight; you’re keeping it to yourself I see (LOL). If it were by volume, you would need a hammer to break it… This goo is more like four parts wax and 1 3/4 parts mineral oil by volume. Cheers!

So is it 4 parts bees wax to one part oil, or the other way around? Can you measure that in cups?
Do you ever put a poly finish over a shellac finish? I like the color the shellac brings out but want the durability that poly provides.
For those wondering the ratios of wax to mineral oil, I think JKM meant 4 parts of oil and 1 part of beeswax to get a sort of pomade. Not 4 parts of wax… otherwise, you’ll just get a chunk of wax that you cannot apply. You’re welcome.
Kinda late to ask a question, which of these would you suggest for a set of pistol grips? Handled a lot / sweaty. May need touched up if dinged. Everyone is just all over the place with finish selection.
As someone who is almost 40, must you really start the video this way?
Really like the cutting board finish, but can’t seem to replicate it. I’ve made the same wax/oil and applied to my board, but the finish comes out absolutely flat, whereas yours has a very noticeable sheen to it. Not really gloss, but you can definitely see how the light in your shop is bouncing off a bit as you move it around. Do you do anything special to apply it like using a powered buffer to get that result?
Anybody know why Denatured Alcohol used in the video is no longer sold in California and what can I use instead?
Ummm…..shellac is not saliva, although it is secreted by the lac beetle, from glands on their abdomen, I believe.
Hi Jonathan.
What would you recommend to apply as a finishing layer on a form ply? Thanks
One question …Are you a Jew?
@1:12 my one and only rule is to pull out
quick question: are you using 400 grit for your sanding with poly or lacquer?
Shellac comes from the female lac beetle.
You’ve never seen a well made wood project that’s been finished with Tung or Teak oil but I did just finish spraying my semi tractor & trailer all in a Krylon Fusion Satin Black. 5 coats…
4:1 beeswax:mineral oil?
heh, $100 HVLP gun, but >1k compressor =P
I think there’s a false belief here that all finishes will raise the grain but that’s not true. Oil finishes won’t.
Exactly the information I was looking for. Very helpful.
How would you finish ebonite’s wood and does it need to be sanded before finishing?
thanks for this helpful video, got my answer about a decorative piece finish
Shellac is not durable, and yellows over time. Poly takes way too long to dry. My goto is lacquer. Of course it depends on what you’re coating, as you point out with the cutting board. Nice video, thanks.
I loved the cutting board on the video. Do you have a plan for the cutting board?
Great. I often use this for my things. Recommended, uniquely obtained.
Do you have a favorite exterior finish for a smooth surface that has a polished look rather than a varnished appearence?
Can’t find denatured alcohol in southern California
Thanks!
