Yeah,.,old video, but a new question I’ve never seen addressed – do the dog holes wear out? Nobody mentions it but with the wedging action I would think they would get oval and worn out.

_Excellent_ guide. This will help me design my home-built upgrade work bench. 👍🙂

Personally I love tool wells, but I’m kind of cluttered when I’m working lol

I put my tool well in the middle though and made it quite deep (5 inches), I also made it from slats of wood with gaps intentionally left so dust or woodchips can easily be brushed to the floor

Wondering what peoples feelings are on aprons and end caps for workbenches? Yeah or Nay? Split top or solid top? Also, how often does one typically need to flatten a solid workbench top similar hardwood laminated construction to Stumpy’s Sjoberg bench? Thanks!

  5. Yuliya Bryant on August 18, 2023 at 6:16 pm

This video is the best explaining what I need to know about workbenches. Now I know so much more about this matter, specifically because I started to build one for myself. Thank you for this video.

I’ve got a nice scar on my thumb due to a cheap vice.

  7. lign Good on August 18, 2023 at 6:17 pm

Dang, you just saved me a TON of regrets! I was about to totally screw up my face and end vises when I start my bench in the morning. I was going to use a 10" quick-clamp style vise for a face vise and spend big bucks for the end vise. Your video makes so much sense. I am going to flush mount the 10" for an end vise and get a high quality face vise. Honestly, I expect to be building a second bench within a year or two with all the things I learn from this first one which is going to be 2×6 Southern Yellow Pine and probably too short and too soft, and full of regrets. Lol! 🙂 Thank you!

This guy, even now is my go to on all subjects involving wood. All the you tubers now and even some of the veteran wood working you tubers have nothing on the nubs.

  9. Michael Ririe on August 18, 2023 at 6:22 pm

Curious, what wood would you use to build a new workbench? Hard/soft? Any particular species that would be best?

  10. Joel Balmer on August 18, 2023 at 6:22 pm

I am confused, James says you want 3" of hardwood for the top (10:45 in the vid), but according to the Sjoberg website for his bench, the "Thickness of worktop [is] 1 1/2" (38mm)". It is just the skirt that gives the illusion of it being thicker (since the skirt is 4 5/16").
Thoughts on this James? Presumably 1 1/2" is enough with a rigged skirt? Cheers

Looking for advice . . . I have a 2.5" thick by 24" wide by 10′ long red oak slab that isn’t quite quartersawn, but close. Do y’all think this would be stable enough for a bench top? I can slice and dice to glue up a panel but would like to avoid the work if possible. Also, it’d be really cool to have a solid slab as a work top!

  12. Paul Hunsicker on August 18, 2023 at 6:22 pm

I love that benchtop anvil plate. I’ve tried to look for one. Do you have a source/link for that accessory?

  13. Nathan Morgan on August 18, 2023 at 6:23 pm

Hey stumpy this is the 1st time I’ve ever left a comment. I’ve watched you for years and loved most of the videos I’ve seen. I have a question I am handicapped And I am interested in building a bench That has tool shelves I can raise up to the level of the bench. I also have limited space that’s why I wanna do this do you have any advice. Thank Stumpy hope to talk to you soon

Noooooo! He who dies with the most tools is DEAD!

  15. Richard Miller on August 18, 2023 at 6:26 pm

Trough down the center might work well in production.

  16. Gee Em on August 18, 2023 at 6:28 pm

    No mention of height ?

  17. Lucifuge Rofocale on August 18, 2023 at 6:28 pm

Actually I steal the furniture my neighbors throw out and is my only way of getting wood so a lot of particle board. So always unconventional woodworking.

  18. Discerningx337 on August 18, 2023 at 6:29 pm

Do you have shorter holdfasts? I use 9" ones. I thought they all came this size. Those things you have are like vampire stakes haha

  24. Ronnie Marshall on August 18, 2023 at 6:36 pm

liked that way of two bench dogs in the vice

  25. TTY YY on August 18, 2023 at 6:37 pm

The high speed blinking adds makes your video unviewable

  26. David Ahmad on August 18, 2023 at 6:38 pm

Looking for the clamp (screw version) that you show in the video…Any idea where I can find them? Don’t see them on Amazon.

  27. avryptickle on August 18, 2023 at 6:38 pm

I’ve been a cabinet maker 16(?) years, and I always find myself nodding to your videos. A lot of it I know, and checks out with my experience, but I always learn a couple of things I did not already know. Thanks for the prolific video-making.

  28. Contessa Adella on August 18, 2023 at 6:40 pm

Great food for thought. Mine’s legs are set back…I’ll be facing them out with 2×4 on the front. Great vice advice too.

  29. Derber Alter on August 18, 2023 at 6:40 pm

    good video, thank you!

  30. Friendly Piranha on August 18, 2023 at 6:42 pm

James, you pronounce all your words so clearly. It is a pleasure just listening to you talk. ☺

  31. ZaneFire on August 18, 2023 at 6:44 pm

"a cheap vice with spindly guide bars" you dropped into an Irish accent or something was that on purpose

  32. John Arnold on August 18, 2023 at 6:48 pm

Go to Rex figures it out. He builds a planers bench with a leg vise. Best thing you can do for yourself

  33. George McKenzie on August 18, 2023 at 6:48 pm

Think that the Sjosberg might need more protection than my shade tree shop of thirty years provides

  34. EnergyIsTruth on August 18, 2023 at 6:49 pm

May I please be the new caregiver of that legvice in your shed that’s just collecting dust?🙏🏽🥹

  35. Zmart Kooky on August 18, 2023 at 6:50 pm

    You are the best.

  36. Gary Brown on August 18, 2023 at 6:50 pm

  39. The Next Hobby on August 18, 2023 at 6:55 pm

Clear and concise. I have a recommendation: Shorter hold-fasts.

  40. David Bishop on August 18, 2023 at 6:57 pm

What dimentions.. height width and depth? Beginner

  41. Kris Holden on August 18, 2023 at 7:00 pm

I would be more than happy to take that leg vice out of your shed for you to free up some space! I’m willing to make that sort of a sacrifice for you sir!!! Lol!

  42. J.D. on August 18, 2023 at 7:01 pm

James may not have 20 years. Lol

  43. George Kaplin on August 18, 2023 at 7:02 pm

    Love the Wings!!!

  45. No more AB on August 18, 2023 at 7:03 pm

i know you said the face vise gets used more but is there a specific reason or does it just turn out that way?

  46. Nate Moore on August 18, 2023 at 7:04 pm

Needless to say, my Harbor Freight workbench was somewhat of a waste of money, but I now use it at a reloading station.

  47. mgarcia4609 on August 18, 2023 at 7:04 pm

I love your channel name ha!

A good workbench is strong enough him but pH balanced for her.

  50. Lilo Ukulele on August 18, 2023 at 7:09 pm

Can you put a link for the face clamp?
