Secret Tips the Woodworking Pros Won't Tell You

Woodworking Pros and Journeymen Carpenters always have a bag full of little tricks they use for more accurate and quicker builds, which they will seldom volunteer because they use them so often, they forget they even use them … like a more accurate miter saw cuts, unconventional woodworking techniques for better finishing results, unscrambling table leg positions and thinking ahead to what best topcoat finish to apply for less distracting wood joinery issues.

    Another good vid, Colin.
There is a bit of an Architect’s mantra that’s relevant to joints or any detail in a design :- "If it looks ‘orrible, make a feature of it."
It goes on :- "If it still kooks ‘orrible, paint it white and if it still looks ‘orrible, box it in and paint it white." 😎👍

I’ve been watching your videos on tips. Love them all. I can’t find or remember what you said you liked using instead of wood stain.

You can also draw a triangle on the leg ends.

The journeyman I first apprenticed for used the line and tick method but the cut was supposed to leave the line and tick on the waste. He hated searching for pencil marks.Years later working for a new journeyman. He made a dash to mark length then marked the line creating the same shape in random orientation. After much arguing we finally figured out why every cut was shy or proud.

I use a .3mm mechanical pencil for accuracy. The biggest variability turns out to be inaccurate tape measures. I find that they all give different measurements! Straightedge metal yardsticks are no better.

  24. Mike M on January 17, 2022 at 9:35 pm

Hello. Great videos. Can you tell me which scrapers you use? I can’t seem to find any.

  25. David Davies on January 17, 2022 at 9:37 pm

Hi Colin, love the tips it the remembering them I find the bugger, but yours are good cause there ones I would possible use a lot. One of the tips you had for legs was good, but I use another method which is less work and I find simpler which is, I just use a capital letter across the top of all 4 legs like a B, just use a letter that can’t be turned like an O etc, like your hill method for glueing up, they have to go back exactly how you set them up and there always in the same position. Thanks for the Videos always enjoy the helps and tips.

    Free! What a legend 👍

  27. Scott Smith on January 17, 2022 at 9:38 pm

Thank you very much for the tips, Colin. Perhaps another has already said this (there are a LOT of comments). WRT the 1-2-3-4 markings, I think you only need the 1, 2, and 3 using your method. The 4th seems redundant to me .

  28. Ryno R on January 17, 2022 at 9:39 pm

Why wouldnt the pros tells us? Its not like me knowing their “secret” would prevent them from earning a living.

  29. Al Rado on January 17, 2022 at 9:40 pm

He’s one of the best – practical, straightforward and easy to follow. There’s no cheesy music, which forces me to turn the sound off and the subtitles on and he’s safety conscious too, without being overboard about it.

  34. Ed Daeges on January 17, 2022 at 9:46 pm

Colin, such simple points but can make a big difference and easier. Thank you.
