I’ve been woodworking a hobby for about 25 Years. For the past 15 years I become more and more interested in doing more with hand tools. I just retired at the end of last year from working fire trucks which I really enjoyed doing but working 10 hour shifts and every Saturday left me too worn out to clear the over filled garage of unwanted benches and extra tools I’ve acquired over the years. Now that I have the time and energy to clear out the clutter the extra tools so I can start doing a lot more woodworking. Watching your videos has given me a boost of confidence to get my hand planes working like they should. Knowing how a tool is supposed to work is just as important as knowing what it’s for and how to use it.
Not bragging at all, but that’s how I’ve approached every thing I’ve worked on most of my life which made good at what I did and not being so arrogant to think I knew it all. Always humble enough to ask and lean from anyone no matter their age or experience, and willing to share my knowledge with anyone wanting to learn. You’re very good at explaining how and why. keep it up.
Excellent tutorial. Thank You
Fantastic!
True woodworker amazing!!
“Hand planing can be really frustrating at first”. Yes it can!! Great video, actually all of yours are really good man.
Most informative video about anything i think ive ever seen, subscribed
High angle for figured woods, low angle for endgrain and softwood.
Your diagram really helped me thanks for making this video
Hey man that’s a really awesome video, cheers. Love it with the kid at the end too lol 🙂
Please show us how to build a router plane like the walnut one you made for yourself. Thanks
Muy buen video, gracias. aprendi mucho el día de hoy.
I’m about to restore a Number 5. After watching all your videos I can’t wait to clean it up, set it up and use it! By the way adorable kid cameo!
Amazing video. You are great at explaining things! Loved it.
Why are you placing your planes on their sole on a flat surface instead of on their side to protect your sharpened blades?
This has to be the most brilliant hand plane instruction and explanation that I’ve ever seen. Well done as always.
Dude knows his stuff!!
Any tips on how to hand plane rough cut Purple Heart, should i use a high angel or low angle plane? What degree should i have the blade, been at this all weekend with a woo driver no 6 plane at a 35 degree blade with a micro bevel and no luck. Plenty of tear out. Any advice would help.
Thanks
I am 7 minutes and 45 seconds in and had to pause the video. This has got to be the clearest explanation I have heard… and i have watched a lot of videos. Your drawings are incredibly helpful. thank you for demystifying what happens during the planning process.
I learned more about hand planing in this video than I’ve ever known about it. Thanks so much.
I found this video because I was losing my mind trying to get my plane to work. Very well done, and now I understand the things I need to tackle to get my plane working correctly (I hope!). Thank you.
I quite like the ‘nightstick’ handle you have on your vice. I didn’t get a quick release on mine and your idea there for faster open/closing seems great. Oh, and I liked the diagrams very much.
You’ll find all the inspiration you need on Woodglut.
Young man, you will do just fine. I am almost 80 and I am impressed with you knowledge of woodworking! Not sure I knew all that you know when I was your age but I still learn.
Good Luck!!
can I just buy one single plane to do the job?
Mm…very useful!! Thanks! The drawings and science helped loads.
It’s requiring so much perseverance for me to get this but one day…. : )
sounds like a documentary film, only talk no action
I like that plane with the blade that goes all the way to the edge. Didn’t know they existed, but have needed one.
You from texas? I see the name that’s the reason I ask. I’m from houston, and I’m just getting in to woodworking a little. I have a knife sharpener (among other things with edges) so I’m pretty comfortable with that part. The other little stuff is what I’ve been struggling with. This video has helped a lot
can you make a video of showing how to plane large slabs of wood that would be far too large to run through a typical jointer and thickness planer? I have a slab that is 20"x70" and I am not sure if I still facing the learning curve or doing something wrong.
This was very helpful to understand the science to these planes
This is the best video I ever watched for setting up a hand plane.
this helped me out a lot! thanks chris!
Very informative and clear video!
That cleared some of my doubts, thank you for that.
😚
I want to know how running a knife that is protruding below a straight line makes a surface flat. It boggles my mind.
I learned more in the first 3 minutes of this video than a whole hour of research on YouTube. THANK YOU.
Good video. Good information. I learned a few things. Thanks. Subscribed
I just bought a used Bailey #5 a couple days ago. Was trying it out yesterday just to see how it works and realized how much I don’t know about planing. Thanks for the info and just subbed.
Excellent video, really, really explained everything that goes into how a plane cuts and works so well.
Thanks buddy helping me set my plane up
Very helpful video
I found some amazing plans for Woodprix. Just check them out.
I think I am going to join your kids and watch the show (good plan to sell, by the way).
Thank you so much. Now I know what a plane is and how it work ( Thought I knew before) Now I just have the practice a lot.
Exactly what I was looking for, great vid and explanation I’m really looking forward to putting this into action . I just picked up a couple nice antique planes. Yes, I watched the other 2 vids. All great. Keep it up.
If I was trying to flatten a table top before smoothing it what would you advise for setup?
That actually really helped … thank you
I’ll need to watch this a couple more times I’m sure. I struggle so much with getting the chip breaker in the correct placement in relation to the blade edge and getting the width of the mouth set correctly.
Very helpful!
Your video popped up after a Paul Sellers plane restoration video… seems like YouTube algorithms are actually working for once!
Thanks for the info! So much to learn for a newbie.
Wow, I saw what I never thought possible. Will see what I can with my Not, as well as my small Japanese
