Sharpening a Chisel in under a Minute | Paul Sellers

Sharpening a Chisel in under a Minute | Paul Sellers

I see more and more options for sharpening a chisel and yet, with no mechanical means at all, I go from a chisel, I have dulled to surgically sharp in about a minute or less.

The fact is I never need to use a grinding wheel, and I was taught to sharpen by the masters of sharpening in my apprenticeship days 58 years ago which I have never strayed from because I found every other option too slow and, dare I say it, DULL and time consuming no matter which method or which machine!

Watch the video and see what you feel.

It is incredible how quickly but accurately you do this

  2. John Robertson on June 20, 2023 at 1:22 pm

Thanks. Your advice and demonstrations are fantastic.

  3. Chris Sepielli on June 20, 2023 at 1:23 pm

For context the chisel is hollow bevel all ready. But I have others without hollow bevel

  4. Christine Bottaro on June 20, 2023 at 1:27 pm

Can you describe how to attach the leather to the wooden strip used at the final stage, please?

Paul, what lubricant would you suggest one use on a diamond stone? Please advise.

  8. Kevin Higgins on June 20, 2023 at 1:34 pm

In saying that, we’d get grateful by the wise 😮.

  9. Tom Pistor on June 20, 2023 at 1:34 pm

I’ve been using your sharpening technique for years. It’s brilliant.

    Paul.

Can I please get some idea/links for the products (blocks)..?

Also ryoba, japanese saw, any good ideas, lots of mixed reviews and keen to use japanese saws for joinery.

Wanted to say finished your router plane kit, and of course, it works great. Lovvitt”

Just a fluid! Do you still use window cleaner?

  13. Sam A on June 20, 2023 at 1:38 pm

What are the grits of your three sharpening plates?

  14. Chillyspoon on June 20, 2023 at 1:41 pm

An utter master at work, and all the gadgets and faffery stripped away – thank you Paul!

  15. Chris Sepielli on June 20, 2023 at 1:41 pm

I feel like hollow bevel is more fragile. Or am I wrong?

  16. Mike Edie on June 20, 2023 at 1:41 pm

That sticking-plaster speaks a thousand words.

  17. Michael Marchione on June 20, 2023 at 1:42 pm

Thanks for the how-to Paul! I always enjoy watching and learning from you! I’m a retired ironworker (46 years) who wants to learn relief and spoon wood carving. I now have a good basic set of gouges etc and all the right sharpening plates and strops. I’m getting myself set up in a spare room for this coming winter when I have to close my little shop until spring. I have designed some patterns like I do when I make whirligigs. It has been over 50 years since I was an art student. I have a nice collection of erasers now lol. Enjoyed, take care!

  18. DHS 23 on June 20, 2023 at 1:43 pm

Amazing, so simple yet so effective, from where did you get your sharpening plates?

  19. -FAZIK- on June 20, 2023 at 1:44 pm

    Practice vs theory. Thank You!

  20. CAJ in Texas on June 20, 2023 at 1:45 pm

Another simple how-to. Of course, when i try it, at best i will end up with a still-dull chisel. At worst, there will be blood involved.

  21. Steven Lang on June 20, 2023 at 1:46 pm

For touching up the blade I just use 600 to about 1,000 for 12000 to Rouge on paper! I’d only go back to course if I had a Nick in the blade! But I have to agree with Paul the methodology works every time! Columbus Michigan

I knew there was a quick way! My dad never spent long sharpening his tools and all the other videos I’ve watched make it look like such an error prone and lengthy chore. Of course, I got into woodworking only after he died.

    Thanks "dad"! 🙂

Just purchased some long 300mm chisels on the bay. Thanks for this, the big reason to have a TV in your garage/workshop

    Super!

  26. Nikolaus Reinke on June 20, 2023 at 1:51 pm

Stropping is key! Took me some years to get there…

  27. Michael King on June 20, 2023 at 1:51 pm

Hi Paul love your videos what stones do you use and where could someone purchase them!

  28. AndyC on June 20, 2023 at 1:52 pm

No fuss, just good practical advice, now practice till you get it right, then you’re set for life !

  29. Dan Alaniz on June 20, 2023 at 1:52 pm

So efficient and straightforward. Thank you for posting.

  30. Ermir R on June 20, 2023 at 1:54 pm

I’ve learned this from Paul years ago and it works perfectly. I get a continuous burr on the strop every time. I get it also from plane irons.

The fluid is window cleaner. The green is abrasive paste (5 micron in my case, around 12,000 grit).

  31. michaeldwilson on June 20, 2023 at 1:55 pm

Thanks for the great information! Where do you purchase your three stones? Thanks.

  32. mirimar69 on June 20, 2023 at 1:55 pm

I maintained my sanity during the realm of lies by watching your presentations Paul. A deep thanks to your based approach to life and your craft🙂

    Cool.

  34. David Lowe on June 20, 2023 at 1:58 pm

No joke, I’d be a top-notch cabinet maker if only I could sharpen my tools like that.

  35. Davi Martins | Custom Guitars on June 20, 2023 at 2:01 pm

É importante considerar que ele não precisa de um apoio para o formão porque tem habilidade pra segurar na posição. Não é todo mundo que vai conseguir segurar assim certinho.

  36. Michael Konkel on June 20, 2023 at 2:01 pm

Thank you so much! Just one question: How much pressure do you apply on the stones? It looks like it is quite a lot – but to my knowledge almost no pressure at all should be applied to diamond stones.

  37. Nick Stone on June 20, 2023 at 2:03 pm

I don’t have grinding stones like this. Could they be replaced by some kind of sanding paper glued to pieces of wood, or would the result be terrible? Or maybe it would wear out in a single sharpening?

  38. Hand Tool Builds on June 20, 2023 at 2:04 pm

After a few years of using a honing guide, I started sharpening freehand. By removing the setup time of the honing guide, I find myself sharpening faster AND more frequently. It really is a win-win! 👍

  39. Chris Sepielli on June 20, 2023 at 2:04 pm

Paul can I ask about mortise chisels? Hollow bevel or flat? You have way more experience than me. So I figured I’d ask. Also do you do a proper sharpening? For instance going to sharpen all the way to strope? Not sure if I spelled that right sorry.

  40. GBHmagic, Polish Illusionist on June 20, 2023 at 2:06 pm

My only issue when i do it is that for some teason the chiseled edge bocomes angled not 90 degrees anymore. its razor sharp. but not straight 😢. Anu ideas on preventing this.. or is not square ok?

  41. alan farnworth on June 20, 2023 at 2:10 pm

Great guidance as always, should you sharpen plane irons after an hour too ?

  42. d.k. on June 20, 2023 at 2:10 pm

    Lovely

  43. CrimeVid on June 20, 2023 at 2:13 pm

This is what Paul is best at, tools and use techniques. I’m not interested in the work exercises, and don’t like his style of furniture, but by golly he can teach about tools.

  47. James Thompson on June 20, 2023 at 2:18 pm

You’ve been doing woodworking for 58 years!? Your parents gave you a chisel when you were one year old? That ain’t right. 😬

  48. John Ford on June 20, 2023 at 2:18 pm

Sharp enough to shave wood…and judging by the bandage on your finger, nick you. Good video, sir. Thank you.

  49. lint on June 20, 2023 at 2:18 pm

I was expecting you to start with only use the finest diamond plate. I pick up something from you in every video. Thank you for all the sharing. You have really changed my recreational woodworking.
