Great tutorial, Steve. You made it look far easier than I found it to be, but after a week of stumbling around and re-watching your tutorial, I’m finally feeling competent to draw up things I want to make. That said, I’m not all that impressed with Sketchup. I found I couldn’t trust it. For example, I would lay out the base of a cabinet at exactly four feet, check to make sure it was still at four feet, but somehow it would become three feet eleven and fifteen sixteenth, when I’m sure I didn’t do anything to change it.
Also, it seems odd to me that there’s no text capability in the program. Adding dimensions or other information to a drawing doesn’t seem to be there. Or am I wrong and just haven’t found out how to do it yet? If it’s there someplace it isn’t obvious.
Also, I found it annoying that when I was working in inches the program would suddenly change to measurements in feet and inches. That’s simple enough math, but it still slowed me down sometimes.
Are these problems simply a matter of me not being able to find the right settings for the program?
Anyway, thanks again for a great tutorial. I’ve been a fan of your videos for years now.

hi Steve Long time subscriber here .My question is when you delete something how do you un-delete

  3. Jordan Hartmann on June 23, 2022 at 9:17 pm

😭 you put a timeline in the beginning of the video. bless you sir, bless you.

Steve will it make a cut list

  5. Tom Boyce on June 23, 2022 at 9:20 pm

I watched a few tutorials and yours is by far the best. While I was using maker 2017, it did appear slightly differently, but based on your demo, I was able to complete my first sketch up design (albeit very simple). Your "show and copy" approach on a real world project worked great for me.

  6. Rock Alvey on June 23, 2022 at 9:21 pm

This is the best tutorial I’ve seen on Sketchup. Thank you!

  7. Mr. Ken on June 23, 2022 at 9:21 pm

I only wish Sketchup had voice recognition for the lower right hand box so I don’t have to type in the dimensions. That would be a game changer, and time saver, that I would pay for.

  8. Nanoqx on June 23, 2022 at 9:22 pm

Steve, I’ve tried a few different tutorials on Sketchup and even Fusion 360, but I just couldn’t stay involved long enough to learn enough to do anything. But for some reason this video kept me clicking along and I feel I can now use it to sketch up my next project. So, after being a subscriber for a few years I went ahead and joined as a patreon member.
    Thank you and,
    All the Best, Chuck.

    Thank you!

I absolutely loath when companies charge for software by the year, what ever happened to buying something and owning it?

  14. John Vrabec on June 23, 2022 at 9:32 pm

This really great training. I need to build a cabinet similar to yours, except with drawer slides. So I’ll have to subtract the slide width from my final drawer width to compensate. Thanks so much!

  15. Scott Jeter on June 23, 2022 at 9:32 pm

FWIW, Sketchup Shop is online only now (FEB 2022), and I think it went up $20 since yesterday (costs 119 per year now). You have to get ‘Pro’ to get a standalone software.

  16. Zero138 on June 23, 2022 at 9:35 pm

    Sketchup or smustard… can’t decide

  17. James C on June 23, 2022 at 9:37 pm

This was actually really awesome! Thank you

  18. Marieke (muh-REE-kuh) on June 23, 2022 at 9:39 pm

ALERT: Sketchup Make is no longer available to download from the company.

  19. Ramin Safakish on June 23, 2022 at 9:41 pm

that was amazing. I already made my model for the cabinet that i want!

  20. Shane Ducholke on June 23, 2022 at 9:41 pm

Great video. How do you then create a cut list as well as a step by step plan?

  21. Richard Williams on June 23, 2022 at 9:43 pm

Hi Steve, thanks for the video. It was a great toe-in-the-water view for anyone who’s going to be using SketchUp. Certainly, the shortcuts are a great thing and I’m definitely going to give this ago.
    Thanks again, Richard, UK

  22. Dan Johnson on June 23, 2022 at 9:45 pm

Super great tutorial. I watch this about once a year since that’s about how often I want to draw something. I’m very grateful.

  23. David Clink on June 23, 2022 at 9:46 pm

Thought this seemed simple. I use Photoshop so familiar with tools software. I got the 2017 ver and began the process but not as easy as I hoped. I’m on a PC and wondered if you’re using a Mac. Never got the color swatch menu on right nor the woodworker style. I wanted to do your drill press stand from begin to end even though I only need a sketch for a shadow box. Little frustrated for now

  24. Fred Floyd on June 23, 2022 at 9:48 pm

This is a really complete tutorial on building a cabinet. The Pencil and Ruler will be put back in the drawer … PERMANENTLY

  25. timpa82 on June 23, 2022 at 9:50 pm

This is what I needed getting started with SketchUp, kudos to you Steve!

  27. David Smethurst on June 23, 2022 at 9:51 pm

Excellent, thanks. You get straight to the "doing" as we go along. I learned a lot from repeatedly and accidently NOT doing everything you said and backtracking and also doing a bit of side research to sort myself out. Great way to learn. Oh yeah, and I used the colouring to help identify like parts for cutting i.e top and bottom, shelves, two sides etc which are sets of the same size. Easy to get the ageing brain round when standing with a pile of wood chewing a pencil. When you speeded up at the end the skill was very apparent!

  28. mostlikely on June 23, 2022 at 9:52 pm

Wow love this tutorial!!! So much info!! I had to write down the short cuts :))) thanks alot!! I love your videos!!

Hi Steve. Can I also make any kind of furniture with this app? Like decorating/staging?

    Available for MacOS?

  32. Cees Tax on June 23, 2022 at 9:55 pm

Very instructive video, I could watch it for hours on end, which I did actually. However, in my Sketchup Make 2017 (Windows and Mac) version there is no such thing as Make Unique. How to get around this?

  33. Vera Platt on June 23, 2022 at 9:56 pm

A tip for selecting an axis – each axis is linked to an arrow on your keyboard – up/down for blue (z), left/right for green/red (x/y) – you can hit the arrow no matter where you are with an item and it’ll pull and snap to that axis.

  34. Fred Floyd on June 23, 2022 at 9:57 pm

Just getting started with SketchUp. This was a great overview and a trial project. This will make learning faster and easier. Thank you.

  35. Michael Madsen on June 23, 2022 at 9:57 pm

is it just on my pc the outer most edges are missing?

  36. toOnybrain on June 23, 2022 at 9:59 pm

I’ve used every complicated, detail-oriented animation software known to mankind, yet Sketchup was and is a huge struggle for me. I don’t find it intuitive at all: nothing is found where I think it should be, and nothing works as I’d expect.

Thank you, Steve, for taking the time to make this video. My crosscut sled is a product of your videos, so maybe my Sketchbook education will be as well. 🙂

  37. kirk billings on June 23, 2022 at 9:59 pm

Can I use sketchup on my iPad?

  38. GK on June 23, 2022 at 10:02 pm

No this is not working, when I select edit component the measuring tap lines disappear and I cannot make the dados

  39. David Williams on June 23, 2022 at 10:02 pm

Hey Steve (any anyone else reading this) … just FYI you can Orbit by holding your Middle Mouse Button… and you can Pan by holding the Left Mouse Button while already holding the Middle Mouse Button at the same time! So, you don’t need to have them assigned to side buttons. 🙂

  40. Frank on June 23, 2022 at 10:03 pm

I was having a great time following along until I got to the 3D Warehouse…alas you can no longer use the 3D Warehouse with Sketchup Make 2017.

  41. B Pez on June 23, 2022 at 10:05 pm

Great video. They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, well you just proved them wrong. I’m in my 70s and have never found a drawing program I could figure out. You have made this look simple. Thank You

  42. Keith H Board on June 23, 2022 at 10:06 pm

Thanks Steve this is great I have been using Sketchup several years
But I gave learned a lot. I use it for woodworking and Sheetmetal work.
There is an add on we have so when we draw sheetmetal products we can flatten out the design and export it to a plasma table program and cut out the design.

  43. Lonestar on June 23, 2022 at 10:07 pm

I’n trying to figure out a few things:
    1- Is there a way to position components at absolute X, Y, Z CoOrdinates;
    2- how to resize components to specific dimensions;
3-is it possible to create a plan, with measurements indicated and a cut list?

    Thanks for posting this tutorial!

  44. Richard Finn on June 23, 2022 at 10:07 pm

This is a great tutorial, thank you for making this. I have struggled with sketchup for a while because I needed something like this to break it down into easy steps. Seems much easier now, I’ll give it a try again!

  45. DJ Mini 2 Numpty on June 23, 2022 at 10:08 pm

only just started watching this, so what i needed lol. been using sketchup for a while, learning as i go and no doubt have been doing things the hard way

  46. deisterminer on June 23, 2022 at 10:09 pm

This is a fabulous tutorial! I am definitely subscribed to your channel thank you for the step by step instructions!!!!

  47. Alex Frederick on June 23, 2022 at 10:12 pm

Best ability of sketchup that I hear about is being able to export a project to use cnc to make it. How does that get accomplished?

  48. Andre Lotscher on June 23, 2022 at 10:13 pm

EXCELLENT a must view for sketch up beginners

  49. Dan Peterson on June 23, 2022 at 10:13 pm

Wonderful. I am so grateful to you for this video.

  50. Mac Flores on June 23, 2022 at 10:14 pm

This tutorial is so awesome! I’m both a Sketchup n00b and a novice woodworker. I’ve been trying to learn Sketchup but videos I’ve seen so far were either broken up into separate video lessons or a bit too complicated for my use. This video was all I needed to get me started with Sketchup frustration-free. Thanks for your efforts in putting this together. I’m a big fan of your channel,
