Stanley Hand Plane Fence no. 386

Stanley Hand Plane Fence no. 386

The fence for a hand plane is not a necessary tool, but it can be a lot of fun today I want to look at the Stanley #386 and show what all it can do.

Pretty cool add on. I could see it being useful for doing odd angles all day long (production wood work).

My wife is sitting beside me . You are supposed to say …… You have to have this to do any woodworking. 😆 🤣 Great Job

Hey comment no. 13… great overall look at the Stanley Plane Fence attachment. Thanks for sharing it and links to old and new. As always, you have provided useful information with a twisted humor bit added for a laugh. Thanks for being you.

I love these old tool videos that explain the tool, and how to use it! Thanks, James!!

GOOD POINT ABOUT PRESSURE ON THE FENCE. ADDING AN OVERSIZE PIECE OF WOOD SCREWED TO THE FENCE ALSO IMPROVES. THE FUNCTIONALITY.

    Very Cool James!

My grandfather had one of these but he seldom used it as he always said when he could have used he had forgotten he had it. Unfortunately when he passed his tools were desiminated to many places using the snatch and grab method by many of his kids and others.

They seem to go even higher than what you quoted. I saw one on fleabay go for over $400. 😮

Really interesting little gadget, James! 😃
But I bet you could make one out of wood!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

They were made for 35 years, from 1911 to 1947. Therefor they were used extensively. If they didn’t sell, they wouldnt have had a 35 year run.

I got one of these to joint three long book matched boards for a dining room table. It worked perfect and I could not have done it well without it.

  22. Rick Dafler on August 30, 2023 at 7:32 pm

I bought mine early on my woodworking path when I was having problems jointing some boards for a cutting table for my wife’s quilting. It was a great help. Some years later I don’t use it much. I’m hanging on to it so the grandkids can use it. “Training wheels” for the No.’s 6, 7, & 8; though I don’t have an 8. Time to visit Colonial Homestead. ✋

Nice. I didn’t know these existed. I am thinking, how to make one for a wooden plane. Thanks.

I’d have thought that as a fence it was unwilling to give you cash.
