Stunning Fine Furniture from 2x4s! This even blew my mind!

Making a modern decorative cabinet using cheap 2x4s from the home center. Brought to us by Squarespace. For 10% off your first purchase, go to: http://squarespace.com/makesomething

I wanted to try something different and challenge myself and see if I could use cheap 2x4s from the home center and make a stunning piece of fine furniture. Even though I was pretty picky when selecting these 2x4s they still had their flaws. None were perfectly straight or flat, and even the best ones still had ugly knots to work around. I went into this woodworking project confident that this cabinet would come out pretty good but I had no idea it would come out as good as it did. I was blown away by the results and nobody in a million years would guess this cabinet was made from the cheapest wood you can get.

tangent, I just had a brilliant idea, based off what looks like a sliding wall hiding storage behind you. I am new to your videos so not sure if you talked about it before but I want to add shelves but it looks unsightly, I would love to have a sliding wall of floor to ceiling panels that I could just keep closed unless I needed access to the stuff and it would look so neat and clean. Just something to hide my shame of hoarding tools parts and paint 😉

Probably the most funniest and most enjoyable woodworking video I’ve seen in a while 😂 well done on the project too

I’ve been woodworking for a couple years now and have built many awesome looking things with 2×4 and 2×6 . I’m a carpenter so I get the lumber for free after the jobs are done , which is awesome. And it’s cheaper to learn with low grade lumber before moving up to the expensive lumber lol . Anyways loved the video , new subscriber here ! Cheers

You have just EXPLAINED INDUSTRIAL MUSIC to people!!! Who is your music source? That music was nuts! I was watching cut wood but the music took me away from the crafty stuff! I hope there is a credit to the music! Meanwhile!! Woodworking! It was very NIN-ish! I’m replaying/starting over the video to see the actual woodworking part! Yay! Table!!!!

  6. NOT SURE on July 15, 2023 at 2:35 pm

Is it the same Bill Murray scene in the background?

  7. DarkMindsLegacy on July 15, 2023 at 2:36 pm

What’s funny to me was, he did not make it in the order as shown or he has the movie Groundhog Day on repeat, love it

  8. Chad on July 15, 2023 at 2:36 pm

My 1 year old daughter loves your music and has been dancing and smiling through this whole video. Though she might be smiling at the grandma comments…

  9. FunWithWoodworking on July 15, 2023 at 2:37 pm

    Groundhog day!

  10. Shakdi Dagalimal on July 15, 2023 at 2:38 pm

3:11 What the heck ! There’s Bill Murray on the tube and he leaves the beebop music in and we don’t get a 3 second audio of Bill’s Movie line.
I am disappoint. Yes, you may talk to much, but Bill Murray does not. Hahahaha – bustin’ those chops.

Well done editing and funny commentary. I only wish I had some of your remarkable tools, such as the laser cutter and the StepCraft M1000. What kind of car were you "flying"?

  12. SLIM'S BOXING COMMENTARIES on July 15, 2023 at 2:40 pm

I love it when somebody makes some nice furniture from ordinary old 4X2’s.. I had a load of leftover 4X2’s from a job I did but they were pressure treated for outside work. I used them in a Decking job but when I began cutting them down it left a really bad black dried substance stuck all over my Table saw blade. Now tbf I was able to clean it off with some WD40.. Yes my bro I used some good ole WD40 as a cleaning agent..
Ur a great woodworker and I also love this sliding table u built bro. It worked out a real treat. I was thinking of something like this myself but I really need to upgrade my saw 1st man.. After that I will begin my change up in the shop. I don’t have a massive shop either though so it depends on how big I build it as well,,
Dale was spot on with the "FISHIN’ FOR COMPLIMENTS" my bro.. LMAO

David sounds like…..you are good with sonic design as well. Fellow sonic dude, from the low end of the design.

That cabinet came out great, just shows you what you can do with structural lumber.

  17. derekiwi on July 15, 2023 at 2:45 pm

your workshop is full of the newest cleanest machinery, and your workshop space is so spotless. Do you ever do anything other than YouTube videos? As in any real work?

  18. toddsmash on July 15, 2023 at 2:47 pm

genuine question if you’re still looking at the comments Dave, but how often do you have to dust your space? it looks amazing and clean and while i’ve got some dust extraction, there is no way i could get away without massive dust extractors. What do you use?
    I wanna get some!!!

And now that i’ve watched the whole video…fuck me that looks fucking sick bro! that top piece is stunning and the doors look amazing. Where did you put it in your house?

  19. Jeantaker on July 15, 2023 at 2:47 pm

    You talk too much

  20. georgiaridgerunner 79 on July 15, 2023 at 2:48 pm

kinda hard to watch this video the off subject dialogue that repeatedly occurs makes it a bit difficult to follow the project
admittedly though i like the idea of people other than myself posting videos of furniture being made from construction grade materials as its readily available and relatively cheap compared to fine wood for furniture

  21. charlyRoot on July 15, 2023 at 2:48 pm

    Arch or…

    arcuate | ˈärkyo͞oət, ˈärkyo͞oˌāt | adjective technical
shaped like a bow; curved: the arcuate sweep of the chain of islands.

I ran across this word about a month ago.

That shot of the finger cot rolled up with the jiz…er..glue leaking out kinda broke me 😂😂😂

  25. Vincent Sanders on July 15, 2023 at 2:53 pm

I like that you talk to much. You throw wisdom in on your comments that I learn from and I’m not even sure you know your doing it.

  26. AJ WoodWorking on July 15, 2023 at 2:56 pm

How did he get the pine to take the color so well. I’m just starting on small projects and when I stain pine, it looks bad.

  27. Kevin Miller on July 15, 2023 at 2:56 pm

Pounding pegs… Is that what Al Bundy did? 😂

  28. hurlrules1 on July 15, 2023 at 2:56 pm

Of course things can be made nice out of pretty much anything when you have thousands of dollars worth of tools along with countless hours of time to make it look nicer than it did and lastly it still looks like it was made using 2×4’s not that it would bother me that it looks that way but you said it doesn’t and honestly it still looks like 2×4 grain structure says it all

  29. Mikej1592 on July 15, 2023 at 2:57 pm

LOL your ending comment did cross my mind, yeah, you can make anything out of 2x4s, all you need is a million dollar woodshop full of fancy tools and machines and you’re golden. lol. truth is, everything you did with those tools can be done with hand tools or some cheap power tools, just not as fast or precise.

  30. Ricardo Rodriguez on July 15, 2023 at 3:02 pm

It’s awesome, just way out of my budget with tool.

  31. George Deery on July 15, 2023 at 3:02 pm

    The wallet! 😂

  32. Paul Hopkins on July 15, 2023 at 3:03 pm

I will go to great lengths to buy straight construction grade lumber from HD, and its a bananna by the time I get it home

  33. josh owen on July 15, 2023 at 3:06 pm

Somehow I missed this video when it first came out. Just watched it and I have to say not only is the piece you made beautiful, but the “supply trip/square space ad” is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while. The green screen had me rolling and “don’t make me turn this car around” was the absolute perfect way to end it. I’m still laughing. Way to go, David. You hit a home run with this one.

You should do a build from start to finish with harbor freight tools. So people wanting to get into woodworking know what to expect

  38. Gary Postell on July 15, 2023 at 3:12 pm

    Really???

  39. Stephen C on July 15, 2023 at 3:17 pm

How could you not make some good furniture with all those amazing tools in your workshop.

  40. Tim S on July 15, 2023 at 3:18 pm

You have a very well-equipped shop for someone who hates woodworking. Just saying.

  41. Mike Harris on July 15, 2023 at 3:20 pm

Was all going great until you stained it luminous orange…. I mean, WTF dude, you’ve been tango’d!

  42. Steve Finlay on July 15, 2023 at 3:22 pm

What’s that yellow handle you use when cutting the wood? Never seen that before so much safer

  43. zeber75 on July 15, 2023 at 3:22 pm

Why would you keep Marshalls and Fender in a dusty workshop (right on the spindle, no extract? Shocking)???
    I wouldn’t bring my ( music) gear nowhere near my ( work) gear… ( and I’m a chippie too)
Fancy lighting, tv… it looks more like a daytime tv kitchen than a workshop.

  44. Wyatt Marion on July 15, 2023 at 3:23 pm

It’s been about a year or so since I’ve watched your videos, the shop looks amazing and you look like your having a blast!

  45. treblemaker on July 15, 2023 at 3:24 pm

Million dollar woodshop… Makes furniture out of 2x4s. It seems obvious to me that, with that kind of setup, you can cut scraps from a dumpster and make something that looks good.

  49. Randy Cosgrove on July 15, 2023 at 3:28 pm

I like the design and the result. Shows it’s not the material but the brain that makes it all work.

And I like your presentation. Always have from the "Drunken Woodworker" days.
