Well.. I won’t do that lol

  2. Domenic Datti on September 30, 2023 at 8:25 pm

Does it matter less for plywood?

  3. OOrtiz87 on September 30, 2023 at 8:26 pm

Aren’t they both going the same direction? Would have been better to say that one is going towards the center of the board and the other is going towards the outside of the board.

  4. Emanuel Sommar on September 30, 2023 at 8:27 pm

Hmmm yes it is stronger BUT it is seen and usually there are other components involved to increase the strength . It’s only use is cabinetry otherwise just screw it together and forget the pocket screw

  5. Rob Gdry on September 30, 2023 at 8:31 pm

    I didn’t know

  6. SaltyOldBaldurian on September 30, 2023 at 8:31 pm

I guess its better to see pocket holes (or scabs/covers) than it is to see broken furniture. 😅

  7. 07Negative on September 30, 2023 at 8:32 pm

Get a castle pocket hole machine. Kinda helps to fix that. Also depends is you have a finished end.

  8. Elan Hugo on September 30, 2023 at 8:33 pm

The holes should be oriented where you don’t see them, the joint should be glued. You don’t pocket screw for strength, you pocket screw for a cheap easy joint.

  9. Fiona Bedford on September 30, 2023 at 8:33 pm

    Super

  10. Steve L on September 30, 2023 at 8:34 pm

Those were forces pulling out the boards. What about forces pushing inwards?

  11. ab diver on September 30, 2023 at 8:34 pm

    you forgot the glue…..

  12. Elijah Pierucki on September 30, 2023 at 8:34 pm

I totally agree, however pocket hole screws in my opinion are a great tool to hold your joints while the glue dries. I’d be very surprised if you have 2 raw wood edges and do pocket screws on either side of the board on an outside corner and one breaks a lot easier.

Glue is the the key to still hide the pocket screws. And remember, ALWAYS sand off the primer wherever you put wood glue! Primer prevents the glue bonding!!

  13. TJ Marsh on September 30, 2023 at 8:34 pm

The second. I seen your YouTube video a long time ago and you literally taught me showing me with pencils how weak it was when drilling that one direction 😂❤❤

  14. Peter Swarts on September 30, 2023 at 8:36 pm

Because of aesthetics, and being too lazy to fill up the holes, I use the inside method. Note to self…STOP

  15. Lee Marshall on September 30, 2023 at 8:38 pm

That’s way we use glue also

  16. Doug Brown on September 30, 2023 at 8:41 pm

Neither. A rabbit joint is not a hard joint to make neither are finger joints depending on aplication. Toss the pocket jig and step up your game

  17. Shiro Surfer on September 30, 2023 at 8:42 pm

Yes that also triggers me nowadays there’s plenty ways to hide that and people still rather use the weak method

  18. Scruffy on September 30, 2023 at 8:44 pm

Isn’t the whole point of pocket holes to hide the screw? What good is it if you leave the holes exposed?

  19. pendragonshall on September 30, 2023 at 8:44 pm

I always went with,, make them hidden. But yea. If it’s on a load your way is superior..

  20. The Crippled Stud on September 30, 2023 at 8:45 pm

I thought it all depended on the project you’re doing. I’ve always tried to hide the pocket hole and didn’t think so much about stranger because I’m usually using glue to.

  21. Jan Szreniawski on September 30, 2023 at 8:46 pm

That depends on how the stress is going to be aplied…
This shouldn’t be treated as a general rule…

  22. MC1222 on September 30, 2023 at 8:48 pm

Thank you!!! I just used the Kreg 310 I bought and promptly screwed them in the way you demonstrated as incorrect! 🙄

Will do it correctly from here on… 🤘

  23. Robert Willis on September 30, 2023 at 8:48 pm

Good video but I think it’s worth saying that there isn’t a golden rule for this as when you made the nice cherry dining room table you used pocket hole screws on the apron going into the table legs on the inside which seems to be contradictory to this video. Either way you’re an amazing teacher and I absolutely love your videos! You inspire me constantly!

  24. megalexantros on September 30, 2023 at 8:49 pm

It seems like it’s relative to the direction you apply that force. They seem good when you apply that direction outwards, but if it was inwards they would only be "grabbing" that small amount of wood that’s on that edge.

  25. CR enjoyer on September 30, 2023 at 8:50 pm

Both cause the same issues depending on angle of force 📐

  26. PUNKISINTHEDETAILS on September 30, 2023 at 8:52 pm

    Pocket Science.

  27. Henry Smifth on September 30, 2023 at 8:52 pm

Damn 🤦🏾‍♂️ didn’t think about that

  28. Random ChopSuey on September 30, 2023 at 8:53 pm

Thank you Steve! I was today years old learning that!

  29. Jonathan Derbidge on September 30, 2023 at 8:53 pm

How about, learn how to join wood using traditional joinery. Way way stronger

  30. JDY on September 30, 2023 at 8:53 pm

It would be more honest if you pulled on both examples in the SAME direction.

  31. Brian Nielsen on September 30, 2023 at 8:58 pm

I love your videos. I didn’t realize it mattered but this makes sense. BUT…BUT…. How do you hide the screw on something you want to stain.

Example: I could cut a dowel, sand and paint

But what about something like the end cabinet.

  32. Gavin Carpenter on September 30, 2023 at 8:59 pm

Wrong, it depends on the project and what it is used for

  33. Nope Nope on September 30, 2023 at 9:03 pm

shouldnt this be based on load direction, making this not a right or wrong way unless the load is in the direction with least resistance? Id like to see a test with an applied load in the opposite direction that broke.

  34. Do Li on September 30, 2023 at 9:03 pm

    👍

  35. Anthony Dohman on September 30, 2023 at 9:04 pm

depends on which side will show!

  36. Alaska Wild on September 30, 2023 at 9:05 pm

Thank you so much for making this video. I’ve made this mistake too. Your videos are awesome!

  37. Brandon Drazic on September 30, 2023 at 9:06 pm

Wow. That answered a question I didn’t know I needed to ask. I love this guy!

  38. Greg Raycher on September 30, 2023 at 9:07 pm

You put them on the side you want them hidden! Unless some idiot wants to come along and rip the dresser apart, then that’s a different problem.

  39. Ryan M on September 30, 2023 at 9:07 pm

    certainly explained some past mistakes:)

  40. Banannaspot on September 30, 2023 at 9:10 pm

Very helpful. A shelf would be my next question. Up or down or straight in per perpendicular through side wall.? Through side at up angle?

  41. Johny Pitman on September 30, 2023 at 9:11 pm

Really you had to explain that
Dad would be sad for what has become of men today. RIP mom and dad

  42. Michael Mancini on September 30, 2023 at 9:12 pm

If you glue the butt joint, it’s not as critical, if not then always pocket screw from the outside as stated

  43. SESNC on September 30, 2023 at 9:14 pm

Nice and concise, well illustrated and demonstrated. I’ve always wondered why Kreg doesn’t address this. Thank you, JS

  44. Daniel Soares on September 30, 2023 at 9:16 pm

Does it matter that you put force towards the opposite side of the screws?
The first one you put force towards the pocket and on the second one away from the pocket.
i.e. putting force on the long side of the horizontal board and subsequently on the short side.

  45. sharpen flat on September 30, 2023 at 9:16 pm

are there people actually that stupid in the world?

  46. Coury Russell on September 30, 2023 at 9:17 pm

You’re not wrong, and I’m sure we can all figure that out, but pocket holes are for hiding screws. Therefore, the inner holes, which are much less visible, typically are the ones that are made up for most applications

  47. Mobil Fone on September 30, 2023 at 9:18 pm

add wood glue and be happy with your invisible joint because that’s you were striving for…. where is the mistake ?

  48. It's just me, chill. on September 30, 2023 at 9:18 pm

If it’s easier to pry apart, would it be difficult to "push" apart?
So maybe depending on the load required for the piece your building it may make a difference. Reason I ask is because you pulled it apart but didn’t show the effects of it being pushed in .

  49. Warren Vickers on September 30, 2023 at 9:22 pm

Great acting faking the first pull…. Anything for a like these days

  50. Matt Traven on September 30, 2023 at 9:22 pm

so the guy from Billions took up wood working? I can respect that.
