  3. Honey-Do Creations on July 29, 2023 at 3:14 pm

I might try that next time I need to cut a dado. Thanks for the tip

Nice technique! The only quibble I would offer is that if you use a "tape" shim is that you add the tape at the top and the bottom and turn the tape side to the rip fence so that your tape shim doesn’t get snagged by the end of your "dado" board and start to roll up on you messing up the cut. By putting the tape to the fence that can’t happen but you want to have your tape added to both the top and bottom so the piece is clamped truly perpendicular to the saw table.

As I watched, especially the part where you removed the waste in the middle, it occurred to me that it was easy to see what was happening from the camera’s viewpoint, but not so much from the view of the worker. Then I imagined a mirror, perhaps on the gooseneck, connected to the fence on the outfeed side of the blade, and angled so that it shows the start of the cut to the worker.

  9. Sajid Rafique on July 29, 2023 at 3:20 pm

    That is truly smart

    🤯

  11. CarlYota on July 29, 2023 at 3:21 pm

It’s also worth noting that instead of the small shim you can use a drill bit. That way if your blade isn’t 1/8 you can easily get it perfect no matter the blade size.

Remember that you don’t have to drag the wood against the rip fence you’re just using that tool set the position of the wood on your miter gauge or crosscut sled.

So just jam the piece against the drill bit against your rip fence. Then make your cut leaving the drill bit behind.

Of course if it’s easy enough to get your shin the size of your blade then that’s fine.

  25. Chumleys Pedalboards on July 29, 2023 at 3:42 pm

I will definitely be using this!

  26. Timothy Wozniak on July 29, 2023 at 3:43 pm

Curious. Is that the Harvey router table drop-in adjacent to fence?

  27. Brian Petersen on July 29, 2023 at 3:43 pm

    Excellent tip!

  28. CarlYota on July 29, 2023 at 3:44 pm

I thought the point of the dado stack was that it saves you from having to make 7 passes hogging out the material. If you have only one six inch dado to cut it guess it’s fine. But if your making something more realistic like 4 two foot dados in a console is it really viable to cut that with a single blade setup?

So you want to spend twenty minute setting up for a two minute cut or do you want to cut away at it for twenty minutes with nearly no setup?

  29. Brian Boot on July 29, 2023 at 3:45 pm

So simple, love it! Thanks Stumpy, your my go to guy for all things wood and yes you can teach an old dog new tricks 😅

    Thanks great vid .

  33. Kasroa on July 29, 2023 at 3:47 pm

You could even attach them to make a double sided spacer, and just flip it over between cuts

  34. Woodgate425 on July 29, 2023 at 3:51 pm

Everyday is a school day! Brilliant, just brilliant!

  35. Bartek Tatara on July 29, 2023 at 3:51 pm

I am gonna be smacking my forehead every time I will be using that trick… Briliant !

  36. David Elliott on July 29, 2023 at 3:54 pm

I was taught this at school for cutting rebates (rabbets). I never thought of using it for dado slots. D’Oh.

  37. Thomas Clarke on July 29, 2023 at 3:59 pm

You are one of the best instructors on You Tube! This video is, as we used to say, Far Out!

  38. thomas tomei on July 29, 2023 at 4:00 pm

metric ply wood , is that why the 15/32s is all about

  39. Bill K. on July 29, 2023 at 4:00 pm

I just watched this again and face palmed myself for a second time.

  40. Mall Ninja on July 29, 2023 at 4:00 pm

Isotunes and powertools seem like a terrible pairing to me. I don’t want anything vying for my attention while I’ve got my flesh near 10,000 RPMs of sharp spinning metal

  41. Joe Black on July 29, 2023 at 4:00 pm

    Whaaaaaattttt! We are all idiots

  42. Luca Nanetti on July 29, 2023 at 4:01 pm

    Clever boy! Pure creativity genius!

  43. peter moritz on July 29, 2023 at 4:01 pm

Oh man, I have been cutting dados like that since 1981, because I never even thought about paying for a dado blade………

  44. Grady 95 on July 29, 2023 at 4:05 pm

Wow! Don’t know where you got this but holy smokes, this is a real jewel. I’m actually looking forward to my next project where dados would be appropriate. Thank You!

  45. RiderCoach Danielle on July 29, 2023 at 4:05 pm
