At the 7:43 mark, the edge bevel offcut jumped out a bit. I was doing this identical cut on a 12 inch long 5/8 thick piece of QS white oak and the offcut shot out so violently that it pierced my sweatshirt, flannel shirt, t-shirt, blue jeans, underwear, and stuck into my leg about 1/4 inch. Unfortunately I had two more cuts to make. First went smooth but the second one shot out and hit the back of the shop about 20 feet away. I was standing awkwardly two the right to avoid getting hit again. The saw I am using is a brand new 5HP Delta Unisaw with the riving knife installed. I was using the OEM throat plate because I do not have a zero clearance for 45 degree cuts yet. Upon further inspection I noticed the throat plate was rocking a bit. Does somebody know if this could be the cause? I have rougly 30 years of serious hobbyist woodworking experience and I have never had this happen before.
It helps people that you respond to your comments. I appreciate your time
Thank you for this. Now I know the correct terms for things so I can find out more info.
Maybe an odd question, but what if the angle adjustment on the tablesaw is jammed & I can’t get the blade to tilt (very old tablesaw I inherited). Is there a way to make a jig to angle a piece of wood to do a 45° edge bevel?
Omg I made a pyramid cut on a thin board and was so sure I was going to get cut. The double tape would have eliminated any risk.
Great video. Thanks!
Thank you, James, your tips are very helpful!
You are the best! Thank you Stumps!!
Hi James. I’m so glad i came across your videos. I am updating all my door trims, and baseboards in the house. My old miter saw has finally died. Would you suggest getting a new miter saw or switching to a table saw for more versatility? I havent seen anyone miter door trims (8ft boards) on a table saw. Seems like a lot of overhang. Or do i just get both tools?
8:30 I did that ONCE, cut a strip of moulding between the blade and the fence, and fired that moulding through the drywall behind me. Fortunately, I was standing clear.
Bravo!
Awesome video! Subscribed!
Thanks for sharing your videos and tips, very useful
There are lots of tutorials out there, but few are straight to the point without fluff. This is super helpful–kudos to you and thanks
How did you attached the plywood to your mitre gauge? Super novice here. Trying to do 45 cuts for door and window trim. Trying to do baseboards and trim only using my table saw (too lazy / poor to go buy a mitre saw).
Super helpful! Was having an issue with getting an end bevel correct and this solved it.
I cannot imagine that the terms bevel and mitre being used interchangeably! Never in my world
Really good job James show more please.
I appreciate the tablesaw tip my tablesaw goes from 0 to 45 but with your video tip I was able to cut my 50° angle a little hairy running the board up on edge but I got the job done with some help with some feather boards🙂
Thank again
I appreciate these videos. I’m a newbie to this and I don’t have a mentor, so I’ve found your series exceptionally helpful going through the basics.

i like the two sided tape trick ,,,handy
I need a 38mm. Fisch Forstner wavy bit, I don’t see it from Amazon. Can you help?
I was ripping some pieces of plywood with a 45 degree bevel and the saw blade keeps pulling the work piece away from the fence on the outfeed side … Any suggestions why this is happening please?
I know this video is older but thank you. I’m just starting out using my table saw. I’m making a frame for a mirror and I don’t have a miter saw. My dad says no problem you can do it with your table saw. So this was the best video ever. Very informative and you explain in a way newer people can understand. Thanks again.
i wish you would make a video of making a stool with compound miters,,,,but go more in detail about how to cut them and assemble the stool,,im having a heck of a time,,especially with the cross members,,,,
That last tip—taping a piece of stock for support while running a piece on edge through the saw—awesome.

Hey mate
Really enjoyed the video. I’m wanting to cut beveled staves to construct a snare drum, and I’m wondering what your suggestions are to ensure an accurate, straight cut, and make sure that my staves are a precise width. Any advice would be appreciated.
Ever since finding this channel, I’ve been binging it every day. While there’s tons of useful advice, that last tip at the end would have helped very much in a project I did during school that had me resort to using a band saw to freehand some miters. Now maybe I’ll actually finish it. After all, it’s sitting right by my right foot.
Hey ! We are half world apart ( I live in Italy ) , but use the same pencil ( at 6:41 ) Funny. : )
Oh my gosh, the dimples in the old miter bar worked amazing.
ok , now I have to buy a table saw…and I’m a landscaper 😀
Riving knife & blade kerf must be compatible
The piece right near the end of the video about cutting bevels less than 45 was what I was initially looking for. I read a how-to article on how it could be done but didn’t quite understand it until you demonstrated it here. So.. thank you! A ton of good information.
Hey there, what mitre gauge would you recommend?
Some great tips here – thank you.
A fantastic find! I’m a new woodworker and have just purchased a DeWalt table saw. This course is wonderful. Good on ya Stumpy.
Thank you, I am just beginning down this path of woodworking…I have a Ryobi Table Saw I picked up recently, I am looking forward to picking up the miter gauge after this video. Thanks
I had a question on side bevel cuts and measuring: How much material does a bevel cut remove? If I needed a 4′ width after a bevel cut, How do I measure this with a 1×6" board. Is there a standard calculation? For example, bevel cuts remove 1" of material, so always add an extra inch to the cut/rip? So I would set my saw fence to to rip my 6" board down to 5 leaving the short side at 4" and the long side at 5". I am trying to build columns.
Excellent Video
How can i cut 72deg bevel on the table saw please.
Love watching your videos, I’ve used power tools for years but just got a new table saw, so refreshing my self on the safety 😊
I’m loving this series. Excellent channel. Thank you!
Thank you so much, for this video! I’ve tried 5 or 6 different ways to cut a 35° angel bevel into some plywood and it’s been disaster, after disaster. I did use the "subtract your angle from 90°" thing and then cut it on end, but without the backer board. Very scary and a waste of a good piece of lumber.
Once gave a severe twist of the plywood and a powerful kickback (thank goodness I don’t position myself directly behind my cuts or I’d be sporting a black eye and possibly some missing teeth, at this very moment!). The second time I cut a perfect bevel on the starting end, but the finishing end was dreadfully uneven. The board only being supported by the blade underneath isn’t an effective way to make accurate cuts.
I have to admit that I was feeling pretty defeated by the mistakes I kept making, all the while watching my plywood get shorter and shorter. So frustrating! 😠 Then I scrolled onto your tutorial and then, Hallelujah! I have been saved! That backer board works fantastically.
Thanks again, for all the education. You’ve helped to save me many appendages and Emergency Room visits over the years.
I’m greener than a country bumpkin when it comes to carpentry, and I’m only in the process of scoping out necessary tools, etc. for the backlog of house projects I’ve got going on. This video is really helping me mentally prepare for the types of cuts I’ll need to be doing, and some best practices for achieving them. Thanks!
…ive got one slot on the right side? Cheap Xmas gifts…
very helpful – thanks
How do I bevel a length wise board safely do I use the fence just new to table saws a d a bit Leary
