This Will Forever Change How You Glue Boards Together

This Will Forever Change How You Glue Boards Together

Panel glue-ups can be a bit frustrating when the individual boards start sliding around on you. Clamping cauls are great, but tapering the cauls will allow them to flex and put an even amount of pressure along the entire panel.

  2. David Clark on November 19, 2023 at 10:35 pm

Very informative. Would it be possible to add some close-up pics of the taper as I am a little fuzzy on exactly what you mean? Thanks.

So two wrongs do make a right… my Father lied to me!!

Just change the wood being joined to prove it works

  6. Mike Dickerson on November 19, 2023 at 10:36 pm

Awesome tip. Thanks. I use cauls all the time, this will help!

  7. somebodypeculiar on November 19, 2023 at 10:38 pm

I’m wondering why there were only two clamps. Perhaps with enough even the remaining misalignment could be corrected?

  8. Stephen Jenkins on November 19, 2023 at 10:39 pm

Looked the same to me, and surely the tape would cover gaps ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  9. Ray Jackson on November 19, 2023 at 10:40 pm

Real simple and very helpful, nice explanation.

  10. J Ss on November 19, 2023 at 10:40 pm

No worries. It sounds good and is a great idea. Thanks.

  11. Andrew Krahn on November 19, 2023 at 10:42 pm

I have yet to do a big glue-up, so I’m curious: what happens to the tension between the boards that are forced into alignment? Does it eventually relax?

  12. Bronson Stephens on November 19, 2023 at 10:42 pm

    Dudeeee thanks for the tip!

  13. Nigel Scott on November 19, 2023 at 10:43 pm

Stop the click bait and put what you are showing us in the title.

  15. Th Fitz on November 19, 2023 at 10:45 pm

No, on the contrary, I will continue gluing boards as I have been, I do it much more accurately than you, and without the fancy stuff. I simple jig is all that is required – glued together.

  16. John Smith on November 19, 2023 at 10:45 pm

Nice short video and good tip. Thank you for not wasting our time for 10min video…

  17. Sladesville on November 19, 2023 at 10:46 pm

Man I wish I had seen this a couple of weeks ago! Just glued up a chess board and was wondering why some of the panels weren’t perfect after the glue up. Now I know why.

  18. Larz AKA Lazerath on November 19, 2023 at 10:47 pm

or you can just run it though the planer after glue up. 🙂

  19. Duong Nguyen on November 19, 2023 at 10:48 pm

This is not totally true because the tape is blocking the gap. Consider on using two steel bars and a planner.

  20. manuel lopez on November 19, 2023 at 10:49 pm

    Phenomenal!!!! Thanks brother!

  21. Michael Schuler on November 19, 2023 at 10:49 pm

Suggestion: Make one master caul, then use it and a pattern bit to make more identical ones.

  24. ugaladh on November 19, 2023 at 10:50 pm

I still have some of the old glue-up contraptions that automatically do this from when I first started woodworking and thought this was the way to go. they are large and ungainly, and I rarely use them for small glue-ups and over time, woodworkers have gotten away from those and many young woodworkers don’t know such things existed.

  25. Ronald Rice on November 19, 2023 at 10:53 pm

been doing that for over 50 years/ I am 74 retired woodworker

  26. bowlchamps37 on November 19, 2023 at 10:54 pm

If you need this tip for glue ups, you should just sell your woodworking stuff and start a crochet career.

  27. Branislav Mitter on November 19, 2023 at 10:55 pm

It always amazes me how the most simple things you show can make your life so much easier. Thank you Sir!

  28. beardedgarage on November 19, 2023 at 10:58 pm

    Great technique!

  29. Kizer Soze on November 19, 2023 at 11:02 pm

if only he would slide or fall into every shot like Kramer on Seinfeld >…… jk >.. dont do that

  30. Philip Peterson on November 19, 2023 at 11:05 pm

I would use packing tape instead of painters tape. Glue squeeze out won’t stick to the packing tape.

  31. tony thetiger on November 19, 2023 at 11:08 pm

why didnt the boards go all whacky when u unclamped them?

  32. steven ho on November 19, 2023 at 11:08 pm

At first glance I was like wtf? Then after video over, I was like WTF!

  33. This old man on November 19, 2023 at 11:10 pm

Thanks for the video. I will definitely be trying this on my next glue up. It looks like you only took of about 1/16”, am I correct?

  34. Richard Skull on November 19, 2023 at 11:11 pm

This trick can be applied to steel.
A slightly curved steel bar works great.
Amazing pressure can be transferred into the middle of your work holding.

  35. Truthbetold on November 19, 2023 at 11:12 pm

Why would anyone listen to someone with such stupid tats?

  36. Bad Dog Homestead on November 19, 2023 at 11:12 pm

Thanks for getting straight to the point! Very, very helpful tip here. Thanks!

    Great idea ,instant subscriber

  38. Diego Forest on November 19, 2023 at 11:14 pm

Come on man! it’s because the tape is blocking from seeing the slight gaps. I think.

  39. Keith Baines on November 19, 2023 at 11:14 pm

Put some loose tongues between the boards

  40. geoff Braithwaite on November 19, 2023 at 11:15 pm

Thanks for that brilliant yet simple idea. Why didn’t I think of that years ago.

  41. Inspire Woodcraft on November 19, 2023 at 11:18 pm

I accidentally said "chamfer" a whole bunch of times instead of "taper". I have no idea why I did that, but they’re "tapered" cauls.

  42. randerod r on November 19, 2023 at 11:18 pm

    Smart.

  43. reloadNshoot on November 19, 2023 at 11:19 pm

My concern would be why are the boards all wonky with each other to begin with? Something isn’t right. Properly jointed boards along with good even clamping pressure should not do this.

  44. Vincent Sr. Kravatz on November 19, 2023 at 11:21 pm

Does it matter if you plane on running your panels through a planer ? The planer will flatten your boards.

  45. Barry Johns Studio Talk on November 19, 2023 at 11:25 pm

You know most of us for the last 30 or 40 years have been doing this with angle iron.

Go easy on the taper, and make them as you need them. You might find only one or two sizes are good enough for all your work.

  49. Dave R on November 19, 2023 at 11:30 pm

I had to hit the like button on this one… lot of new guys need to see this. Hope your vid gets out to the masses. You hear that YouTube algorithm!? Nice work bud, clear, concise and short. As it should be. 🙂

  50. August West on November 19, 2023 at 11:31 pm

I just use spring clamps on the ends.
I’d rather have tight glue joints above and below.
A small difference in height is insignificant
Thick glue lines are unfixable .
