Tick Sticking, a Carpentry HACK (few people know)

Tick Sticking, a Carpentry HACK (few people know)

Little demonstrates how to use a little know tool named a “tick stick or ticking stick”. A tick stick is used to quickly and preciously copy and make a pattern of any odd or complicated shape where using a ruler would be challenging. The ticking stick was made popular by boat-builders and is a way of measuring accurately which has been around for centuries.

Sometimes the easiest way is the best way , simplicity at its best👍. It just goes to show how builders of old did things without a computer 💻

This is the first time I’ve seen or heard of a ticking stick. Thank you Leah so much for the clear teaching and explanation. ❤

  6. Brian Stevens on September 1, 2023 at 6:53 pm

I use a string and start from the two corners on the long side, set cord to far a point pull a short arc, , draw an arc from both {lomgside} corners repeat on other corrner. … it’s much faster.

    Awesome, thank you!

That’s a really smart idea. I never would have thought of that, but I can now see that it works quite well.

I am a boat builder and we call these sticks "spiling sticks" very similar principle, and it works beautifully, whoever designed this method should be sainted…:)

Well, 50+ yrs as a carpenter; shoulda hung out w/ some boat wrights. Only boat builders I ever knew made aluminum fishing boats.

A ticking stick, eh? Gonna have to remember that.

    Thanks.

Something I’ll add to the knowledge base is a roof framing/sheathing tool I came up with.

A framer’s square is just not big enough, sometimes; the it’s trig time w/ the Pythagorean theorum, or the ‘3, 4, 5′ method.

Easy enough to do, but a challenge by yourself.

I make these, several sizes, the job size demands.

Cut a 2-3" wide strip of plywood from an 8′ scrap. At 3′, 4′ & 5′, on the same edge, mark from one corner, to the dimension.

It makes checking square of something too big for a framer’s square a piece of cake.

I’ve also made a version where I drill a hole at point zero, then holes at the same distance from the edge, @ 3′, 4′ & 5’.

The holes allow you to nail/screw it in place, if the slope’s too steep.

Large ones can be made using multiples of 3, 4 & 5.

It’s obvious that aliens came down and gave that ticking stick to the Egyptians. That’s how they built the pyramids! 😂

    so cool!

  24. Rick Daystar on September 1, 2023 at 7:10 pm

Good grief Leah it’s been three years! It popped up as " suggested" it was like yesterday seeing the video. Hope you are well my friend. 👍

  25. Nathan Crum on September 1, 2023 at 7:10 pm

This is great Jane. At first I had no idea what you were doing and couldn’t see how this helps at all and then when you explained that you take your template and the notch helps you line up exactly it clicked! What a neat way to transfer complex shapes. Saving this to try for later.

  26. Kale Gallarde on September 1, 2023 at 7:12 pm

Wow what a complete waist of time 🤦‍♂️ there’s a method that could be done just with Brad nails that could get you that shape in less than a minute, stick Brad nails in all corners lay the ply or whatever material on top and push down then connect the dots, it’s way more accurate and wayy more faster

I guess The tick stick is usable for making patterns from clothes too😊

  45. David Mccarthy on September 1, 2023 at 7:41 pm

It would be easier to just offer up the new wood over the original and trace it out then cut for a perfect fit

  46. J Xx on September 1, 2023 at 7:41 pm

What happens if one of the edges on this shape are NOT straight? This looks like so much work.

  47. David Falconer on September 1, 2023 at 7:41 pm

In the UK , should you have this ( excellent ! ) tool in your bag , you might be arrested for having an offensive ( pointed ) weapon …. ( do not mock , it happens ! ) ….. DAVE™ 🛑

  48. Travis Fox on September 1, 2023 at 7:42 pm

I can’t see how this would work with any shape that is curved, however for more linear shapes it’s a great idea! Thanks!

  49. Enoch Page on September 1, 2023 at 7:44 pm

    That is so freaking cool!!!

  50. Suzanne W on September 1, 2023 at 7:47 pm
