The 3 4 5 method comes from A squared + B squared = C squared…. With a calculator on every phone you can now use any numbers to get square. You don’t need 3 4 5. Good video thanks for sharing.

So in theory. Could you use the speed square trick to check the pitch of a roof?
Gage Anthonyon January 16, 2019 at 8:16 pm
Ya, these are good tips for newbies, these are what you learn first year on site. The books will never show you the quick and easy corners you can cut.

the 345method is great but suppose I want to square a 2-foot board with 3 foot board how do you go in between 3in and 3 foot to get it square
paul kon January 16, 2019 at 8:31 pm
the tape measure fetching trick only works if you can see the item but are for some reason not able to reach that far. having worked in various construction trades for many years i have used it myself.
i did not know the 3-4-5 rule and that was worth watching in itself. usually if i am building something with 4 sides i pull a tape diagonally across the corners to see if they are the same. this will let me know the corners are square provided the parallel pieces are of equal length. of course if you are laying out corner plates on a slab that may not be possible so the 3-4-5 rule is good to know and would be more accurate than a framing square due to the length employed.

The first garage I ever built was 24×30 out of rough sawn lumber and plywood in a location with no power. Two of us, both 19, had nothing but a tape measure, hammers, water level, stihl 015 chainsaw and ladders. But our secret weapon was dads who had taught us to think, and the garage got framed level, plumb and square.
My friend’s dad could take a blueprint and precut an entire house and the crew that built it would never need to make a cut. That guy was amazing, what was in his head for clever knowledge. You’d be measuring and figuring and he’d say here look- and flip boards around and explain the angles faster than I could think, and make a few marks and cuts and boom, it all fit together!

Hey man, I have never seen any of those techniques. Of course, I’m just building small items. Still useful stuff for where I’m headed. Thanks.

I knew the 3-4-5 for squaring up, but the speed-square as a level, framing-squares to check planar alignment and the string-check for beam straightness I didn’t… Kudos for sharing !

I didn’t get the string straightening the beam one. I get that you’re checking to see if the beam is straight. But How do you straighten a bowed beam? that’s not possible.
