When working between centers my lathe starts to be very loud. The lathe in the video made absolutely zero noise. What’s the problem with mine then ?

Excellent video. But one very importnat question; I have a set of Record chisels and there’s no parting tool in it. I’ve got the gouges and the skew and a sixth one with an oddly curved shank and I don’t know what it’s for. I got this set passed on to me from my father-in-law, and am just now getting into woodturning. Why would a set of turning chisels not include the parting tool when it’s that important?

I am not seeing a clear difference between a one inch roughing gouge and one inch spindle gouge. Can someone explain?

  11. Colin Cannings on February 16, 2022 at 10:45 pm

Hi, how it goin’? I’m curious why you refer to the tools, as Chisels. When they are really a Gouge. We don’t Chisel, when woodturning!

Do you need different gouges for spindle vs. bowl turning?

  22. Everyday4Play on February 16, 2022 at 10:57 pm

I’m a bit disappointed in myself but I learned a lot more than I imagined I would from this video, thanks for making it

  23. robohippy on February 16, 2022 at 10:58 pm

When using the skew to ‘level’/straighten the cylinder, it is best used in a ‘peeling’ cut. Same for roughing with the SRGs (spindle roughing gouges). Start with the cutting edge high and the handle low, then raise the handle till the edge starts to cut. Essentially you are cutting on a tangent to the wood. If you are holding the tool more level you are pretty much using a scraping cut. A scraping cut does work, but almost always leaves a coarser surface, which means more sanding….

Thank you for this. I just got access to a lathe, but the guy who gave me the introduction seems to know as little as I.

Short and to the point. Great vid.
    I haven’t used a lathe since 1970.
I just bought one, so this vid was just what I needed.

  32. Michael Wattie on February 16, 2022 at 11:08 pm

Thanks ! Really well done, clear concise, useful information, for someone interested in starting this type of wood work

  33. Lyndal Anthony on February 16, 2022 at 11:08 pm

It shows that you are a woodworker and not a woodturner. Sorry, not trying to be disrespectful, but you sure aren’t using the skew chisel as intended. You are actually using it as a negative rake scraper, which does work but you don’t get the glass smooth finish with a proper skew technique. It also appears that you are rubbing the bevel which also give a lot better control and finish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0G7-Wsfd9YA&t=831s

Got my first lathe today, messed with some horrible soft pine and it chipped and blew apart and made a mess, but it was incredibly fun!
I actually got a decent looking item out of it and I’m excited to try more! Home depot here I come…

  42. Kevin Groff on February 16, 2022 at 11:16 pm

What are the round tip tools called? I see people use them a lot when working with resin. Are they like a finishing tool?

  43. Tom Cahill on February 16, 2022 at 11:16 pm

    thanks for the info

  44. Matthew Lazos on February 16, 2022 at 11:18 pm

*9:22** clock* so what you are saying is, don’t take your hands off? 😂

Seriously though, awesome video to get back to basics. Everyone will make tons of them and to see a video like this and hint at what can go wrong after investing time in the workpiece is really cool.

It burns so bad when you at the end of an invested project and you accidentally whoopsie.

    fantastic video. thanks!

  47. William Lehan on February 16, 2022 at 11:27 pm

I would call this the “quick start” guide to wood turning, which is exactly what I wanted. I started watching another video that described itself as a beginner video; the guy was enthusiastic and very knowledgeable but went into WAY too much detail. This was perfect. Thank you.

  48. ltandrepants on February 16, 2022 at 11:32 pm

you can scratch your work by letting tool bounce on work

  49. Alice Mastroeni on February 16, 2022 at 11:32 pm

Thank you for this clear, informative video. I’ve just bought a second hand lathe and it has come with many chisels. Thanks to your video, I now know what each chisel is and how to use it. Thank you
