Excellent video sir, thank you, I see that you still have all your fingers, I just bought a lathe and this will help me a lot.

Having resigned my skew to nothing more than a scraper, even after watching video after video about how to avoid catches, this one finally explained it in a simple manner that finally works for me! Thank you so much sir!

  10. Buddy Carroll on January 2, 2023 at 1:56 am

From what I’m seeing, you have the long point UP. Am I missing something?

  11. Jesse Searls on January 2, 2023 at 1:56 am

Thank you, that’s very instructive, but a bit scary to watch.

  12. KLEINBURGER13 on January 2, 2023 at 1:57 am

Just let the hair you have left go it’s over bro

  13. Aaron Davis on January 2, 2023 at 1:59 am

When that first catch happened at the beginning of the video I almost peed my pants! Thanks for sharing. I just bought a lathe and am trying to learn to be safe before I use it.

  14. Mike Disimile on January 2, 2023 at 2:00 am

Great job explaining everything thank you

Excellent tutorial Mr. Raffan! I am an absolute novice at wood lathery (is that even a word?!) and I learned a great deal. Thank you sir.

  17. nicksshitbro on January 2, 2023 at 2:03 am

I just got an antique lathe with a nice set of craftsmen chisels and I haven’t had time to really practice with it much before now, but I am soooo beyond glad I found this video. I didnt know ANYTHING about skews until this video.

  18. James Couch on January 2, 2023 at 2:05 am

Being a beginner I’ve had plenty of catches and watching this video just about gave me a heart attack 😬. However, you are an excellent teacher, thank you!

  19. F. DeMascio on January 2, 2023 at 2:06 am

Complete new-bee on the lathe here. I was being shown how to use one recently, and knowing nothing myself, did not know I was being shown wrong.
They had me using a small gouge on a fresh square piece. Chatter and catch the whole time.

  20. Islandboy242 on January 2, 2023 at 2:07 am

Thank you for your sacrifice 🙂 very informative. Trying to move from (nearly) dummy proof carbide tools to gouges.

  21. Thechadbrad on January 2, 2023 at 2:09 am

This helped me so much I just started to turn larger wood and couldn’t figure out why it kept catching

  22. Paul Dante on January 2, 2023 at 2:09 am

    Will catches dull my tools?

  23. Peter Hague on January 2, 2023 at 2:09 am

This is the single best woodturning video I’ve seen.
Makes things so clear. Not just how to use the tool, but why to use it that way.
Also shows that is important to respect the tool, but not fear it

  24. Simon Wilson on January 2, 2023 at 2:11 am

Brilliant … Just started and I think everyone starting with a wood lathe should watch this first.

  25. Andy Overall on January 2, 2023 at 2:11 am

    Very helpful, thank you!

  26. Scott MacDonald on January 2, 2023 at 2:13 am

Thankyou for this. I once again see how much I have to learn 🙂 Excellent explanations.

  27. snobear41 on January 2, 2023 at 2:13 am

Thank you- new to turning this helped me understand what I am doing wrong

    Thanks

  29. Patrick Stapleton on January 2, 2023 at 2:16 am

Like my daddy always told me: "Son, negative grade scrapers are not a panacea." Words to live by.

Richard, don’t you have that comment written? I do not speak English and I do not understand the spoken word, but I am able to translate the text. Thank you. Mila

  32. Bobbin Boy on January 2, 2023 at 2:22 am

Excellent video, I went ‘ouch’ on every catch. One minor point, I thought angles of less than 90 degrees were called ‘acute’ angles.

  33. Nikolay Pelov on January 2, 2023 at 2:23 am

That’s the first video you would want to watch. All over youtube I see getting started videos that show you how to hold the tool the proper way and how to do it well. Which is nice, but won’t help you to start with woodturning. I would add something – I bought a lathe with smaller tools. Still long but not as wide. It’s quite hard to work with narrower skew tool – the bevel is smaller and the cutting edge is smaller. Small lathe doesn’t mean you’ll need smaller tools.

  34. Sun Fun on January 2, 2023 at 2:25 am

    Poor piece of wood…

  35. Marco on January 2, 2023 at 2:26 am

    thank you master – subscribed

  36. Todd Harshbarger on January 2, 2023 at 2:27 am

Totally clear – very nicely explained!

  37. Cable Ferret on January 2, 2023 at 2:27 am

This is fantastic. I am considering taking up woodturning and was concerned by not knowing how things can go wrong. But you show exactly how the catches occur and how to use the tools safely to avoid getting them into that situation.

  38. NK GAMING on January 2, 2023 at 2:28 am

Wonderful teaching very super plzzzzz upload many videos👌👌😊😊👏👏👏🙏🙏

  39. Bill K. on January 2, 2023 at 2:29 am

    Thank you for the instruction.

  40. Justin Andrus on January 2, 2023 at 2:30 am

You definitely earned my subscription, this was very concise very instructive video on the dos and don’ts of lathe work

  41. Jenny Harding on January 2, 2023 at 2:32 am

Thanks for a very clear, simple, to the point explanation without any waffle. Spotted this at a good time as I am just learning/practising how to use my skew chisel. I got those very neat cirles around the wood and couldn’t figure out why. Now I know.

  42. Heelers Anonymous on January 2, 2023 at 2:33 am

This is the most frightening video on the internet. Also, very helpful.

  43. El Rey on January 2, 2023 at 2:35 am

Doing a beginner’s class in woodturning and catches are terrifying when they happen. This explanation is great.

  46. Hankeln Consulting on January 2, 2023 at 2:37 am

Thank you for this video. I am having trouble when hollowing out a bowl. Sometimes the tool suddenly and quickly moves sideways (and destroys the rim if I am having a bit of bad luck) – I suspect this is somehow similar to these catches, but I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Can someone explain what happens – and how to avoid it?

  47. Thom Lusardi on January 2, 2023 at 2:40 am

I noticed that at times you have big gap between the tool rest and the wood. I always reposition my tool rest to be as close to the wood. Is that a waste of time because I stop frequently to do the adjustment. Can you talk about tool rest height. I always feel inclined to have it always below the center line of the piece. Thanks

  48. Chris Smith on January 2, 2023 at 2:41 am

    Brilliant thanks

  49. Chris Waldron on January 2, 2023 at 2:42 am

I jumped every time there was a catch
