Understanding Woodturning Catches
Understanding Woodturning Catches
Richard Raffan demonstrates why woodturning tools catch on the lathe and offers tips for preventing them. Visit http://www.FineWoodworking.com for more woodworking technique videos.
Excellent video sir, thank you, I see that you still have all your fingers, I just bought a lathe and this will help me a lot.
Sr. Much respect for your knowledge and instructions. I really appreciate your explanations, I can see you really really know what you are talking about. Thanks a lot!
That poor piece of wood
12 minutes ago I thought I was going to buy a lathe. Now Im scared again.
Awesome lesson – thank you!
Well done, thank you.
Very helpful, thank you
very professional 👍
Having resigned my skew to nothing more than a scraper, even after watching video after video about how to avoid catches, this one finally explained it in a simple manner that finally works for me! Thank you so much sir!
From what I’m seeing, you have the long point UP. Am I missing something?
Thank you, that’s very instructive, but a bit scary to watch.
Just let the hair you have left go it’s over bro
When that first catch happened at the beginning of the video I almost peed my pants! Thanks for sharing. I just bought a lathe and am trying to learn to be safe before I use it.
Great job explaining everything thank you
Very good video thanks
Excellent tutorial Mr. Raffan! I am an absolute novice at wood lathery (is that even a word?!) and I learned a great deal. Thank you sir.
I just got an antique lathe with a nice set of craftsmen chisels and I haven’t had time to really practice with it much before now, but I am soooo beyond glad I found this video. I didnt know ANYTHING about skews until this video.
Being a beginner I’ve had plenty of catches and watching this video just about gave me a heart attack 😬. However, you are an excellent teacher, thank you!
Complete new-bee on the lathe here. I was being shown how to use one recently, and knowing nothing myself, did not know I was being shown wrong.
They had me using a small gouge on a fresh square piece. Chatter and catch the whole time.
Thank you for your sacrifice 🙂 very informative. Trying to move from (nearly) dummy proof carbide tools to gouges.
This helped me so much I just started to turn larger wood and couldn’t figure out why it kept catching
Will catches dull my tools?
This is the single best woodturning video I’ve seen.
Makes things so clear. Not just how to use the tool, but why to use it that way.
Also shows that is important to respect the tool, but not fear it
Brilliant … Just started and I think everyone starting with a wood lathe should watch this first.
Very helpful, thank you!
Thankyou for this. I once again see how much I have to learn 🙂 Excellent explanations.
Thank you- new to turning this helped me understand what I am doing wrong
Thanks
Like my daddy always told me: "Son, negative grade scrapers are not a panacea." Words to live by.
Happy New Year 2022, I greet and invite you to my place
Richard, don’t you have that comment written? I do not speak English and I do not understand the spoken word, but I am able to translate the text. Thank you. Mila
Excellent video, I went ‘ouch’ on every catch. One minor point, I thought angles of less than 90 degrees were called ‘acute’ angles.
That’s the first video you would want to watch. All over youtube I see getting started videos that show you how to hold the tool the proper way and how to do it well. Which is nice, but won’t help you to start with woodturning. I would add something – I bought a lathe with smaller tools. Still long but not as wide. It’s quite hard to work with narrower skew tool – the bevel is smaller and the cutting edge is smaller. Small lathe doesn’t mean you’ll need smaller tools.
Poor piece of wood…
thank you master – subscribed
Totally clear – very nicely explained!
This is fantastic. I am considering taking up woodturning and was concerned by not knowing how things can go wrong. But you show exactly how the catches occur and how to use the tools safely to avoid getting them into that situation.
Wonderful teaching very super plzzzzz upload many videos👌👌😊😊👏👏👏🙏🙏
Thank you for the instruction.
You definitely earned my subscription, this was very concise very instructive video on the dos and don’ts of lathe work
Thanks for a very clear, simple, to the point explanation without any waffle. Spotted this at a good time as I am just learning/practising how to use my skew chisel. I got those very neat cirles around the wood and couldn’t figure out why. Now I know.
This is the most frightening video on the internet. Also, very helpful.
Doing a beginner’s class in woodturning and catches are terrifying when they happen. This explanation is great.
Smart
By no meens am l an expert! Don’t even have a machine,(but) l think l would be more comfortable with a full face shield?, Outstanding examples! , Thank you 👍
Thank you for this video. I am having trouble when hollowing out a bowl. Sometimes the tool suddenly and quickly moves sideways (and destroys the rim if I am having a bit of bad luck) – I suspect this is somehow similar to these catches, but I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Can someone explain what happens – and how to avoid it?
I noticed that at times you have big gap between the tool rest and the wood. I always reposition my tool rest to be as close to the wood. Is that a waste of time because I stop frequently to do the adjustment. Can you talk about tool rest height. I always feel inclined to have it always below the center line of the piece. Thanks
Brilliant thanks
I jumped every time there was a catch
Sir, I admire you! Thank you very much!!
