Good video. I’ll add… think about a battery operated 1/4" trim router as well or as an alternative to the corded trim router. They are perfect for quick round over trims without a cord limiting you. I love mine and it gets used way more than the corded/larger routers I have.
This is a great video ! Thank you 🙏🏽
Do most router tables fit common routers? What would I need to look for to see if a used router table will fit a newer router? Excellent video. You look a lot like actor Dan Aykroyd!
Sir, I have a doubt, please clear it.
Do routers need lubricating or not?
Very informative, thank you much.
I am so glad I thought to search for a vid like this~ EXCELLENT and straightforward layout of insight. Really appreciate the assistance (guidance)!
awesome video thanks
Before watching this, the answer is no. The router I have is not the right one for me. So I’m watching this to find out which one might be.
Thanks for this vid! It took me 3-4 weeks of casual looking on the Net to decide on the Bosche 1617EVSPK. I was surprised to learn that I chose the router you like, but my reasoning was slightly different than yours. Nice to know I can thing like a Pro at times. Thanks again!!!
Always the best info from ol’ Stumpy
I have a 50 year old Porter Cable where the bearings finally gave out, especially the small rear bearing. I can’t seem to get the case with the brushes off the case body. I don’t know what the problem is. Any ideas?

You answered all my questions, before I even had them. Thanx!!!! Great video!!!
possibly the most helpful speaker/teacher on youtube. every sentence has value and I learn so much in such a short period of time. you rock
Awesome information. Thank you!
I am very new to woodworking and planning to buy a router. Your words are extremely helpful for me. Thank you very much for your time!!!
Can I mount a drill chuck onto a trim router and use it for a DIY drill press? Thanks James.
A couple years later and everything James said here is still true but I would add if looking for that second router think about a cordless compact router. It is so nice to not have to drag a cord behind you with one of these routers. Some brands offer both corded and cordless compact routers that use the same bases so you can drop your cordless router in the plunge base for your corded router and away you go. Makita and DeWalt are two that I know of, and no doubt there are others. Of course selecting a cordless router you’ll want to go with whatever battery platform you’re already into, hopefully they make a cordless router. Then you can buy the bare tool and save the expense of a charger and battery.
Your videos are great learning source. Thank you for your dedication and for your sharing.
Great video! I am very grateful for the advice!
Thank you
I think I heard you say you can also use the under mount router as a hend held? Just wondering cause I never use the under mount but I would use a hand held alot more
Hello Mr Stumpy Nubs. I have an important question that I cant seem to find the answer to. Black Friday is coming and I need to buy a router. I am a DIYer and have rental properties. I am going to take on the job of installing my own laminate kitchen countertops without hiring someone. I need to make the biscuit cut outs, miter bolt cut outs, and I guess whatever else I would have to do for a simple "L" shape countertop installation. Can I get away with an 18 volt makita, ryobi, or dewalt? Or Do I have to look for a 2 horsepower plus plug in 1/2 inch router? Thank you very much for your time. I appreciate it boss!!
Don’t spend a lot of money on routers, unless you have production runs in mind, what you should do is research and handle a lot of routers, I have three, two of which are the same (1900w) and one 800w, total cost £150 ! the 1900s are rated for a minimum 600 hrs work before changing the brushes, One of our big box stores used to sell pro quality tools cheaply under their own brand name ! I know some guys like to buy the more expensive tools, and fair play to them. But you don’t need to. Equally you can spend a lot of money on mediocre crap !
Awesome video, thanks sir!
Super informative. Thank you.
Timley, I have been shopping for a router. Do you have a favorite table to go with your favorite router?

Great info!
new to wood working! subbing cause you give great advice. appreciate this material !
Dammit, America, learn to use Watts.
great video! …2 questions: (1) full confession i searched for one of your videos relevant enough so i could ask is there any way i could swap a 1/2" collet onto one of my three! 1/4" collet routers? ( i have two old base routers and one cordless makita trim router), i’ve never seen anyone do it or mention it on videos and it probably is either impossible or a huge NO-NO, but i just need someone to tell me not to try this so i can move on with my life
(2) i have no problem buying new tools…actually I do have a problem as I am a little too eager to buy new tools, but re. the bosch kit you provided a link for, can you comment on the above table depth adjustment feature? you didn’t mention that feature in your video but it seems like a real nice thing to have , do you know if that comes with the kit or is anything additional needed to purchase to access that feature?
thanks so much…i’ve learned a ton watching your channel, i hope the hand is back to 100%…peace, Rob D.

Hey thanks for this informative video, one question thought …
I bought a Makita M3700 Router Trimmer last month, and it says Max 35000 n-1
I think that means it spins at 35000 RPM is that right ?
Problem is that all bits that i see online and on stores in my area are rated 28000 Max and sometimes less than that (24000) !
And my Makita does not have any speed control utility on it
Now should i just use those bits or should i buy another router ? although i hate to lose my investment on the Makita one !
Can i just use 24000 RPM bits and work safely ? or something wrong will happen ? i already tried it couple of times with a 24000 max bits and nothing happened, but i am more concerned about safety on the log run !
Thanks in Advance !
Sorry.. what’s a router?
10/10 – and a straight subscribe from me. Nice one.
Lol, did he say left walnut? ROFL. Thank you for sharing. Love your vids.
Whew! Just bought my first router yesterday, James, and found this video today. I bought a Makita hand-held with three interchangeable bases, so I think it might get your seal of approval. Time – and project results – will tell. Thanks for the advice.
Your the man for what information you give. I know you don’t do field testing in your videos, but I still learn. If I want to check out testing I look for those videos. Thanks
Thank you for this tutorial on routers and for clarifying HP on routers. Never thought about the versatility of 1/2" shaft vs 1/4", another great piece of information.
Porter Cable doesn’t seem to make routers anymore. Any other recommendations for a router lift motor for a Sawstop inline router table?
100% agree with the bit selection, I had one 1/4inch Makita router, it is cool but too weak when I am planning to make window frames. Planning to buy 1/2 inch and amount it on a router table.
Hi I’m a bee keeper and was wondering which router bit is best for put the grove on the in side of the hive box that the frame sit on cheers
I would never recommend it but I bought the Vevor chinese Makita knock off trim router. I fought it until I saw that for $89 I could get the the plunge and offset bits for that price. I have used it on oak, maple, poplar making christmas decorations and it has been very good. I have used it for making signs and it has been very good. I do regret no LED light.. but I have used alt solutions.
Dang! Where were you when I bought my Rockwell 2020 in 1975? 🙂
Like your commonsense in all your vids thanks
What a combatant background. 👍
This is not the kind of router I was looking for 😏
Left Walnut haha
Thanks! Great vid!
